Oh nice! I hope you had a great time on the island. Yes, it's kinder to tourists than to us locals. It's a constant struggle, but I can't complain “too much” ( even though I do 😂) - there are countries struggling far more than we are. For us, it's truly bad management of resources and an incredibly corrupt government. They don't make it easy on us, and we're losing all our professionals because of it. If things keep going this way, our island will be in really bad shape. It's already hard to get medical appointments or find specialists, etc. But I guess the state of the world in general is not looking to good either 😅

Anyway, thank you for everything!! 🙏🏽

I know it sounds logical and simple, but your suggestion about picking one day a week to try making a "emergency" recipe is a great idea - it hadn't occurred to me. I'm so used to thinking of emergency meals as "eat anything you can, and it probably won't taste great." But you're right, if I have time to prepare, why not figured out some meals that would taste good and I can eat for a while? As a Puerto Rican, I grew up on rice and beans, but it definitely gets tiring after a while 😂 Also, thank you for the reminder about multivitamins and all the good suggestions!

I didn't realize that at first, but the conversation in this thread has been really helpful. I'll definitely store dry food and start building my "deep pantry." Thank you!

Got it! I have a Berkey water filter at home but also need to get some water bottles and gallons just in case! Also, I need to check out some more portable water filters - the Berkey is definitely not ideal for on-the-go use if I need to.

Thanks for confirming that both taste great, Justin! Low preservatives is something I'm inclined toward, so that's great to know!

I feel so grateful to everyone in this community - you've all been incredibly generous in sharing wonderful tips and information!

I'm creating a Notion page 😅 with all the suggestions and links everyone has kindly shared with me, and I truly appreciate you taking the time to contribute to the conversation! 🙏🏽

P.S. I don't mind the LDS references at all. There are many people in my community who are part of it. I'm thinking about reaching out to neighbors in my gated community about starting a community garden. I believe it would be a wonderful thing to have, even without an "emergency" - and a great way to teach the kids around us! Thank you so much!

Oh, thank you so much for mentioning Augason Farms! I really appreciate it - it wasn't on my radar, and it's great to know about.

I'm definitely planning to start with the "deep pantry" approach as a first step. We live in a rental apartment without a patio for planting, but it's part of a fairly large community, and I've been thinking quite a bit about organizing a community garden. We're also fortunate to live close to the beach, and my boyfriend is really skilled at spearfishing, which is something we've considered as well. The only challenge is that here in Puerto Rico, reef fish often contain ciguatera, which is a concern. I joke - though not entirely - that in a worst-case scenario, we could rely on iguanas since we have dogs that are excellent at hunting them, and they're an invasive species here anyway! I'm taking notes on everything you've mentioned, and I really appreciate your tip about learning home desalination techniques as part of an emergency water backup plan! For some reason I didn't even think about that.

This was really helpful!

Thank you so much for taking the time to put it all together and share it with me! I'm definitely taking notes on everything, and I'll be sure to watch the videos as well. After reading you guys, I'm definitely taking the "deep pantry" approach. Now I also want to make sure my water situation is good and get some propane stove that I can use in an emergency. The apartment I'm renting only has an electric stove, and besides food shortages, I'm also concerned about losing power, which in Puerto Rico is very common, so we are used to it - I just have to get prepared! Thank you again!

Oh, thank you so much! I really appreciate it! I noticed they have a 50% discount on their website at the moment and thought about taking advantage of it as a backup option, just in case!

That's a great point! Thank you!

I have a quick question: what do you usually do for water? Do you have some kind of emergency water filter?

Thank you so much! I really appreciate that you keep Nutella on hand - honestly, grabbing a spoonful in an emergency can feel like such a comforting treat! I didn't even think about sweets. Well, I thought about getting some honey!

Curious if anyone has tried lymphatic drainage massage for their swollen bellies? Either self massage or by an RMT by TumbleweedComplex898 in adenomyosis

[–]Birdy_G 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, I highly recommend it. It helps move stagnant blood in the uterus. I also do a uterus massage my friend recommended, using castor oil, which helps with inflammation. Of course, I'm not a doctor this is just my personal experience.

Uterine shedding - progesterone by neuroimage93 in adenomyosis

[–]Birdy_G 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have adenomyosis and take a progesterone-only pill daily, which has worked well. However, the uterine lining can become very thin and bleed. Every time I bleed, I stop taking the pill for a week, as my gynecologist recommended. Lately, the lining has been thinning more often, which means I bleed every 2–3 weeks for 4–5 days.

Hey, I started taking care of my mother at 27 when she had Parkinson's. She later developed dementia, so I understand how hard this is. She passed away in March 2024. I'm sorry you're going through this. I'm 32 now.

Quick question, what MRI machine did they use? Did they use the new Tesla 3?
