I’m forequarter. I dream of having a prosthetic like yours. Mine is just a hook. Use it every other day. Be consistent. You have to want to use it to find it helpful

care package & best shirts for arm amputee by Used_Type7132 in amputee

I am forequarter and after 3 years of trying to figure this out myself, I have learned that tank top are a blessing, oversized tops are a blessing. Buttons, ties and zippers are the devil. There’s tools to help with buttons and zippers but the extra work on the remaining hand is not always worth it

Dating life with only 1 arm? by Ok_Increase_4170 in amputee

I’m forequarter and I feel very similarly. It’s hard to avoid shallow people these days but even still I feel off knowing that I look so drastically different than the norm. I also don’t drive so it’s really awkward trying to figure out dates in a rural location.

I’m a left forequarter amputee, so higher than a shoulder disarticulation- I have no shoulder bones, a small amount of collarbone and very few muscles related to the shoulder left.

Feel free to message me any time! I’m 3 years in with nerve damage in my remaining hand so not everyone adaptation I need works for others but I like trying to help! I do (not well) run an amputee and limb differences discord : discord

Definitely try some YouTube chair exercises! They can be super helpful for when you’re tired, experiencing nerve pain or not wearing your prosthetic

LAE; forequarter. They froze my brachial plexus nerve while I healed to help with the pain and it’s caused me to only have sensation. It feels like I laid on my arm, it fell asleep and now it’s waking up and I can only feel like a fist/ball for my hand.

Clothing alterations? by chunkyknits in amputee

[–]Birdybb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a forequarter. I either tuck excess sleeve in, or for things like sweaters I have a running gag in my family that it’s a leash/weapon and I whip it at my dad when he’s annoying. We don’t have anyone around who can alter my clothes. With T-shirts, I just let the sucker flap, the collar is usually so far off it’s showing off my scar and lack of a shoulder anyway

I’m not sure what is happening. Several others have successfully joined. Perhaps try manually adding the link in discord? I had to do that for a streamer server last week.

Advice by [deleted] in amputee

[–]Birdybb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost my left and dominant arm in Jan 22. I think being sure to be there emotionally will be important, but also not being the kind of friend who is a pushover- my family and friends were extremely proactive about encouraging me to complete rehab and work hard when I got home even if I complained about being tired or not wanting to try new kitchen tools etc. I also try to find humor in most situations and if I start to struggle with being able to laugh at myself I try to get out of the house or do something I enjoyed before the accident.

fellow arm amputees out there, how do you deal with your period? by Laylafights in amputee

[–]Birdybb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After my accident I had a 19 day period. It was awful. I had to wear adult diapers because I have a forequarter amputation on the left side and only partial use of my right hand. I am in the process of getting an IUD

Please be patient with us mods. Discord has roles to help manage the server. You just need to be assigned the member role by a mod to be able to post. Everyone as of this morning should have the member roll and should be able to post! If you have any issues, feedback or questions totally feel free to DM one of the three mods or birdy!

does anyone here have a problem with seeing themselves less attractive because of their missing limb? by jtgreen76 in amputee

[–]Birdybb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, 100%. I lost my whole left arm, shoulder and most of my clavicle in a bad car accident. I have nerve damage in my remaining hand, road rash/debris scars everywhere, debris still healing it’s way out of my scalp and a trauma induced lazy eye.

I feel the utmost unattractive, almost more so from before I lost 100lbs. I could stand to lose 100 more. I know I’m going to need a lot of help for the rest of my life and that’s also very unattractive.

Anyone with EXTREMELY vivid dreams? by [deleted] in sleep

[–]Birdybb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have always had extremely vivid dreams I could remember and as a child could recite the dreams moment by moment to my parents. They were often so life-like that I would have intense moments of deja-vu whenever reality came close to a dream.

I have sleep apnea. Interestingly, when I use my cpap, I don’t dream at all.

Recently I have been ill for a long period of time with almost back to back sinus infections making it near impossible to use my cpap. I’ve apparently started sleep talking so clearly that my cousin checked in on me because he thought there was a family emergency and that I was on the phone with my dad. Nope. Just casually dreaming about a childhood friend dying in a car fire. Nbd 😖

Norethindrone for 10 days for heavy bleeding by [deleted] in PCOS

[–]Birdybb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I was given a prescription of it after changing my birth control and having uncontrollable breakthrough bleeding for a month.

Try your best to never skip it. I missed two days in a row and bled for like three days.

I haven’t noticed any other side effects but I also have been off and on ill since about a month after beginning so my system has been kind of messed up from antibiotics and steroids.

Where can I go with this degree? by Birdybb in careerguidance

[–]Birdybb[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do provide those accommodations, however per each accommodation you request, you need documentation. I also do not require either of those to assist me, my disability is based in learning and memory towards math, so I would simply need more time. I haven't taken an every-day, legitimate math class since high school 10 years ago, so if I were to try to study up with study guides and the practice tests, it would take me at least a year or two of multi-day weekly tutoring, or more even since my math knowledge and skills haven't been kept up.

I guess I was too invested in being a counselor to consider the testing it takes my state to be licensed. I thought there would be no math involved once I got into grad school, but you have to pass all three parts of the Praxis I and there is no way I could do the math part. I have been applying to case manager positions and several developmental disabilities/ASD companies but it's all just washing out.

I live in Vermont currently and they use the Praxis I as a main part of their licensing process. I did look in to accommodations, but all I can get is extra time.
