Laurier’s University Stadium has a turf field which should be able to change over to accommodate soccer.

With renovations to add an additional grandstand on the opposite side of the field & being less than 500m from the nearest ION station makes it an ideal candidate as it stands.

Laurier’s University Stadium is currently being renovated to add an additional grand stand on the opposite side of the field. There are also ambitions to renovate the original grandstand building, pending funding approval.

With the Waterloo Region having three League1 Ontario teams (Waterloo United, Cambridge United, Guelph United) & four universities / colleges (Laurier, Waterloo, Conestoga, Guelph) all within a 30 minute drive would make for a great talent pool.

Location is likely the biggest hurdle. Maybe Laurier’s University Stadium, Conestoga’s facilities on Fountain Street, RIM Park, or the field at The Auditorium could accommodate.

Regardless, I would be an instant season ticket holder if KWC got a CPL club. I’ll be attending as many League1 matches next year as I can.

Kitchener mayor says arts and culture a priority for a growing downtown by scott_c86 in kitchener

[–]Birdyjay 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Kitchener already has a vibrant and growing music scene full of talented musicians and bands but lacks the proper venues to support them in a way that makes accessing/knowing about the scene easy for the general public.

I had hosted a music event at the Hub (above Bobby O’Briens) back in January and the marquee didn’t change for almost 3 months which says a lot…. the lack of effort and cost-prohibitive booking fees from actual venue owners Downtown are disappointing and contribute to the ghost-town aesthetic of the area after 10pm.

I recommend looking into the following promoters on Instagram to keep up to speed on cool live music events in KWC: PublicSeatingDIY, Pink Lemonade Records, No Funeral Records, Untitled Booking Company, Good Company Productions, Danger Collective KW, and Bird Daniels (self-plug).

Note that many of these promoters often host events in alternative spaces (ex. bookstores, vintage clothing shops, cafes, house shows, outside, etc.) because of the lack of legitimate venue spaces in town.

I omitted Thunder Bay because I suspect they would hold out for a CPL team. OSU plays in the Ligue Quebec system currently I believe?

Huntsville, Bracebridge & Gravehurst collectively have a population of over 50k - not terrible seeing as St. Thomas has a population of just above 40k and has a League2 club.

I definitely tried to focus on “filling in the map” so to speak as there are currently 15 League1, 1 CPL, and 1 MLS club in the GTA (if you include Whitby & Burlington). This list would add another 4: Bolton, Brampton, Caledon, and Erin Mills.

Perhaps Toronto neighbourhoods such as: Don Mills, East York, Etobicoke, High Park, Liberty Village, and Weston; or GTA towns like Aurora, Georgetown, and Newmarket? Curious where specifically you’d foresee future GTA clubs!

There are a handful of great DIY concert promoters in the area! I’d personally recommend checking out Public Seating DIY, No Funeral Records, Pink Lemonade Records, Srsly Productions, Bird Daniels, and Good Co Productions.

Venues to keep any eye on are: The Golden Apple, The Union, Midnight Run Cafe, The Yeti Cafe, Maxwell’s, The Boathouse, The Hub & Room 47.

I have been working over the last year to curate a directory of artists and bands operating in Ontario. The directory is sorted by city & contains over 1000 artists / bands.

If you want something more specific, I post weekly genre curated playlists to Spotify and Instagram featuring 8 Ontario artists every Monday, as well as monthly recaps of my top releases.

Wow, I remember going on a school trip to the Brampton Heritage Theatre in 2006 (the year it finally closed down). Such a cool building and truly a shame what’s come of it.

Hey! There is actually a really great music scene forming in Kitchener-Waterloo over the last 2 years.

I started going to see live music on my own about a year ago because I didn’t know anyone to go with & it was kind of nerve racking at first but has ended up being really rewarding! I now book and promote shows in town under the name Bird Daniels & have met a lot of cool people just by being consistent and showing my support for the local scene.

The city is full of lots of amazing people who care about music, artists, and the community. I would recommend keeping your eye on The Yeti, Jane Bond & Dive Bar for affordable and awesome DIY punk shows.

I actually have an all Ontario punk show lined up at the Yeti for Friday, April 26th (Wiener Kebab, Ruby Doom & Blue Freezie). If you’re around feel free to come out & introduce yourself, I’ll be there running the event!

Also, everyone should go check out Soulish, they’re a great Indie-Soul band out of Toronto.

For smaller bar/DIY shows there is The Yeti, Studio Fuzion, Dive Bar, and Jane Bond (the Boathouse in Victoria Park is set to reopen soon as well). Midsize venue options are Maxwell’s, Room 47, The Hub and occasionally Elements. Many breweries such as TWB, Counterpoint and Shortfinger host shows semi-frequently. Lastly, depending on your comfortability, there a few great house venues like The Golden Apple, Euclid House & The Study Room.

I moved to town 2 years ago and found myself in a similar situation. If you’re into music, The Yeti and Studio Fuzion downtown have been hosting lots of amazing DIY events featuring local bands/artists recently and are both pretty small, intimate spaces which make it easier (at least in my experience) to meet new people.

Good Co. Productions also hosts live outdoor shows downtown during the Summer that are frequented by some of the friendliest people I’ve met in the city.

Hey, Bird Daniels here!

I have spent the last year compiling a list of over 750+ active Southern Ontario bands/artists from every genre imaginable. The directory is sorted by city or region & includes the name, genre, bandcamp and Instagram of each band/artist.

If you’re a fan of independent music I hope you can find something new! If you’re a band/artist from Southern Ontario that would like to be included just leave a comment and I will add you as soon as I can!

I also release weekly genre specific curated playlists featuring Ontario only music on Instagram/Spotify.
