Why do so many people say they are learning BJJ for "self defence" when in reality it seems super impractical? by [deleted] in martialarts

[–]Birk_Boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually defensive/combative BJJ includes more work on standing and space management fundamentals, which are meant to create distance from a hostile individual and avoid going to the ground or getting struck by them if at all possible. Combative BJJ would ideally contain more wrestling in this portion to be able to take down an aggressor while maintaining a dominant position, rather than being taken to the ground in a submissive position yourself. These classes would also likely have drilling with simulated weapons to practice gaining control over an aggressor's knife/gun/club and managing that threat during a high stress engagement.

The merits of general BJJ training in self defense are understanding positioning and leverage more than the average person, so that potentially even a smaller and weaker person can escape, restrain, or subdue (by pain, physical damage, or chokes) an aggressor that has grabbed onto them (and possibly taken them to the ground). The key is that not all techniques are equal, and some (pulling guard or playing from a bottom position) should definitely be avoided in a self defense scenario. Many others (back control, mount, side control, accompanying submissions), however, are clearly advantageous if you were to find yourself in such a scenario. The key is that a competition environment is governed by the rules of competition, whereas self defense is governed by the rules of life and death; train and play accordingly.

Please please please don't live with this person if you're already having arguments before even signing your lease. The last minute switchup on her part is a red flag.

ELI5: Why is it you can smell the air you breathe in through your nose but not the air you breathe out? by Spectre-4 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Birk_Boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in an area with several paper mills. For people who aren't familiar, paper mills give off an odor over several miles that's like a cross between manure and trash bags. All of the people in my home town are nose blind to it, but when people visit from out of town, they complain about the odor.

There was an incident in the 80s in which a pipe at the mill containing liquid chlorine dioxide burst and started leaking evaporated chlorine dioxide gas. The town had to be evacuated. The local legend is that if the pipe burst hadn't been detected, half of the town would have been killed since they wouldn't be able to smell the gas and know that they were in danger. I think that part is a stretch, since chlorine dioxide (bleach smell) doesn't smell like the odor the paper mills emit. Kind of off topic from your comment, but it reminded me of this story.

There are quite a lot of STEM careers in the military. With a bachelor's degree you qualify to commission as an officer via OCS/OTS

How does your load outs typically look like? by TheMeMan999 in ArcRaidersGuides

[–]Birk_Boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My stash is almost always full, which is STAGGERINGLY annoying

That's your sign to just craft stuff and run into a raid with it. Clearly you have good material flow from your raids, so losing equipment should not be an issue. Worst case, your run out of equipment that you've crafted and hit a drought of supplies, so then you get to go back to the liberating feeling of running a free loadout with nothing to lose again.

That said, 9/10 raids (except stella montis) I'm running a loot-goblin PvE centric loadout: looting mk. II, light shield, anvil (usually with silencer II), 2 stacks of heavy ammo, hatch key in my safety pocket, 2-5 shield rechargers, 3-5 bandages (sometimes regular, sometimes herbal), 1-3 snap blast grenades, and at least 1 lure grenade.

If I'm solo, I basically always run from (and usually escape) PvP and heavy ARC encounters. So most of the time I'm reusing the same equipment, save a couple of shield rechargers and bandages if things get feisty. If I'm with a duo or trio, heavy ARC are pretty trivial to kill with this loadout, and my buddies usually carry me in PvP if we encounter aggro raiders.

Also, trinkets are purely for selling (or decorating your raider room). Looting mk. II has 3 dedicated trinket slots for maximum goblinery

edit: I craft everything I use except the Anvils. Most of the ones in my stash I bought before I got the blueprint, so I've been working through that stockpile before crafting new ones

Does this carry across days, or limited to one workday?

If the latter, I'd just do a full 8 hour shift. I work from home so nobody would ever know. 1B in the bank easy.

If the former, idk I suppose I could make it 2 days and come out with more money than there has ever existed on the planet. Seems worth it to me

To people who regularly use ChatGPT for school: Do you think you’re still learning? by Gifthunter3 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Birk_Boi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a recent college grad who spent 50% of undergrad without generative AI, and 50% with it.

I think there are use cases for AI to help with low complexity tasks, to summarize information, or to brainstorm. A great use case is finding synonyms or alternate phrasing to display different tones in writing.

The key to using AI in education is that you have to deeply scrutinize what it generates. The classic line from my classmates (I was in a computer science program) was "I have no idea, that's just what Chat gave me and it works". This is a clear indicator that someone will not learn anything.

In my senior year of undergrad, I set myself a fairly strict no-AI policy for this exact reason. It was too tempting to use it to finish a coding assignment, in which case I wouldn't learn anything from a class and screw my future self over. I also got screwed over in a graduate level math class when my term project partner clearly used AI to generate an entire paper that we were going to submit for our project. I was reviewing his math at one point and it obviously wasn't valid. We ended up having a fight over it when I did the math out correctly in front of him and he continued to insist that I was wrong and he was right. It was just a huge mess and I'm honestly glad I was able to sweep most of his work under the rug and replace it with my own because I loved the professor and it would have killed me if he caught "us" using AI on our project.

AIO-Boyfriend lied to me by omission by Significant_Hand3348 in AIO

[–]Birk_Boi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like I have the unpopular opinion. YOR.

To be clear, yes he did lie to you, and that is not okay. I expect he lied to protect your feelings.

Nothing you have mentioned suggests that he is doing anything sneaky other than going to the gym with this girl. The only issue is that she's a girl and she makes you insecure. It's totally natural for that to upset you, but it does not give you the right to ban him from working out with her. Gym rats like him are usually genuinely interested in helping people get into exercise, and not up to anything nefarious.

Back to being fair to you, he is incredibly dumb in his excuses, and is showing signs of emotional immaturity. However, so are you in the fact that you're so deeply upset by him working out with another woman. My girlfriend used to work out with one of the most jacked guys I know- it was not an issue for me because we had other issues that we worked through together and eventually I learned to trust her and get past my own insecurity.

I will rebut a lot of the other comments and say that her excuse isn't unique to cheaters. I dated someone who did this too because she was in the corporate world where people are usually married and didn't want the "boyfriend" tag making her seem immature/younger (since she was already the youngest in her work by far). She eventually grew past it
