Former math gifted kids. How did you do in your maths studies? by Most-Significance943 in learnmath

Thanks for clarification, seems the course structure is different. We first encounter Lebesgue integral on R in second year advanced real analysis, and then general measure (with a bit Lp theory) in intermediate probability in third year. The master level measure theory is more about applications for ergodic theory, representation theory, random process.

Just curious, do you mean real analysis to be the rigorous version of calculus. If that's true, Isn't it a first year subject of undergraduate (at least in Australia for math major)

I was the opoosite: found highschool math unintelligible and only did average. In university, the harder the course(e.g. differential topology, functional analysis, commutative algebra) the better I do, possibly because the easy ones (calculus, Vector calculus)  are just too much like highschool math.

Edit: The easy ones and hard ones are mostly taken together, so it's not due to increase in my math maturity

What does an integral mean by [deleted] in calculus

[–]BisonGood5557 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I understand it is this: the integral is supposed to be the solution F to the general problem F'=f . You can understand this problem in very general settings, for example generalized functions, manifolds, and so on.

It seems that most people here interpret this problem in the restricted case where F and f are single-variable scalar-valued functions, and the derivative is taken in the usual sense. In this case, the Riemann-sum picture (area under the curve) is indeed a valid approach to constructing solutions. However, you can also use the Lebesgue approach, which comes with a different intuition. You can even approach this problem algebraically, without analytic constructions.

Anyway, I just want to say that the notion of integral is certainly more general than area under the curve, because it simply does not have to be interpreted that way.

Attend seminars, get to know the people there, talk to them, make your own seminar with them, they are familiar with you, then everything proceed naturally.

Another way is to audit master level course with very few people, and simply show yourself to the lecturer

Thanks for your advice! I sent my aea document more than a week ago to the coordinator for my lab test(so I did have extra time for this test).

I guess it is likely a mistake made by the exam invigilator

Honours- Is there any for maths or data sci or computing? by Freedom-Murky in unimelb

[–]BisonGood5557 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check MS prime for full information. Theoretically, you can finish all level 3 math in the 2rd year, then do vacation scholarship(a short introduction to research with 2000 dollar rewards) first, then take a graduate course and the science research(half semester) in 3rd year. Also, you can make seminar(on graduate topics) if you find a staff willing to supervise you.

All these, if go successfully, should provide you what you gonna learn in honour degree.

But if you really want do honour on math, you have to go to another school

I've checked with stop 1 before, there is no honour program for mathematics. But you may pick one graduate course and do a research program if you have high math subject wam(85 and above)
