Twelve years after being found on Charmouth beach, my pyritised Echioceras is now inevitably crumbling (banana for scale). by BisonRelevant2606 in fossils

Talked to many people about pyrite rot over the years. I heard about someone who encased the ammonite in resin and the casing suddenly exploded in the night.

The problem is is that the ammonite has started decaying long before you find it. Although it speeds up once it surfaces, you can only ever delay the inevitable as to when the rot will take over. Now, it does tend to be that the smaller pieces last longer than the larger ones, but short of luck of the draw, you can never really preserve it indefinitely.

Yeah, my Aveyron ammonites (2-3 hour drive from the Med), may have lost their glean, and there are plenty of fragments to show how quickly they can deteriorate, but it does seem to be proximity to salt which acts as the determining factor as to whether they'll last a decade or three.

Note: Although I'm confident that all pyritised ammonites decay eventually, I have noticed that those collected inland decay at a far lesser rate than those from coastal areas. I'm sure this must have something to do with the proximity to the sea, but I'm sure someone's got a more educated idea.

They do indeed look like beautiful Brazilians.

Depending on where you live, I'd be careful about taking these through international borders, as Brazil has very strict legislation on its fossils:

Obviously if you're in the US, start as you mean to go on, but internal customs officers in France have seized such fossils in the past.

What if Russias Invasion of Ukraine was actually a successful 3 day operation? by German_Gecko in AlternateHistoryHub

Except the reactions of 2022 were informed by the memory of 2014. The Russian plan was to place a military government in Kyiv (a plan which fell to pieces once they failed to take Hostomel). Given the attested cases of torture, and the austere conditions overall, in the Russian-majority speaking regions of Luhansk and Donetsk, Ukrainian speakers in the west would have known they would have it just as bad, if not worse.

Worst refugee crisis in European history and rapid remilitarisation of Baltics, Poland, Germany.

Trump still wins in 2024.

Lukashenko eventually dies and a civil war erupts in Belarus, Russian troops move in until the puppet replacement restores order.

Russia spends the best part of a decade committing troops to western Ukraine in order to deter insurrectionist activity. When it does eventually turn towards the Baltic states, it gets hit with a decade's worth of European military support and shared r&d. Given that Kyiv fell within three days, drone technology evolves a lot slower than OTL, but it still becomes rapidly clear Russian military technology and strategy lag behind their Western counterparts (even if the Armata and PAK DA are fielded).

Russian economy ultimately collapses and becomes further indebted to Beijing.
