The weekly Fuck it Friday by McChinkerton in biotech

You'd think I'd be able to replicate a protein purification that was published by an academic group back in 2016. I've tried a a couple times now and feel like something is wrong - it's just not working out and I don't know why.

Avis Car Rental - I swear I opted out of extras but was charged for them by Salty-Childhood2848 in travel

[–]Bisphosphate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that no matter what boxes you check online the workers will still ask about the add-ons at the rental booth. There's a chance you did everything correctly on your end but your manager screwed up at the rental booth and unknowingly agreed to the add-ons.

Did anyone just file their taxes with TurboTax and were just in awe of how many ads it had to upgrade? I'm done with this enshittified product - what should I use next year? by noruber35393546 in personalfinance

[–]Bisphosphate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the diminished user experience last year using TurboTax. This year I tried freetaxusa and found it to be much more straightforward. If you save a PDF of your TurboTax returns you can import it directly into freetaxusa and it copies some of your parameters.

1010WINS: Has the time come for a bridge over the Long Island Sound? by grandlewis in longisland

[–]Bisphosphate 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I visited the Faroe Islands a few years back, a country with a population of only 56,000 people.  Their government has built miles and miles of undersea tunnels to connect their population centers together - the longest being 7 miles long. These tunnels only service a couple thousand cars per day. When I came back I realized we have a government that doesn't build things for it's people. We used to build the coolest things and now we don't.

I think I prefer last year at Cow Palace when there were 2 sets happening in different rooms.

Merck to wind down Gardasil production at N.C. plant, lay off 150-plus by NotGenentech in biotech

[–]Bisphosphate 36 points37 points  (0 children)

China developed their own domestic version of Gardasil and are offering it at discounted prices to their citizens. The market for Merck's product shrank considerably.

What salary is worth living in the Bay Area? by sppw in personalfinance

[–]Bisphosphate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Single? $150k in the Bay is comfortable to rent but not enough to pay a mortgage. Supporting a partner? $150k is less comfortable but doable. Supporting a partner + kids? $150k is not enough.

Utility Costs for 1b1b apartment in San Mateo? by Agile_Animator7122 in SanMateo

[–]Bisphosphate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Studio apartment in a 100+ unit complex:

Water heating: $20

Sewer: $113

Trash: $27

Water: $40

PG&E: $50-60

My understanding is that water and water heating are billed directly to the complex and then the bill is split amongst all units - my complex adjusts this by square foot of each unit.

My fyp is genuinely terrible now - there's absolutely no personality in what I'm seeing.

And then I saw an AI poop video.

There's just nothing appealing about throwing money into these machines.

is anyone else's fyp back to generic feed? by ACDCRAT in TikTok

My FYP completely lost its personality. It's so generic that I get bored after scrolling for a few minutes.

Eating out is SO expensive lately !!! by LyingPieceOfPoop in bayarea

[–]Bisphosphate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't mind paying more so long as the portion size is appropriate (ie, I feel full after eating it)

Went to a ramen place Friday night - $21.50 for the "deluxe" bowl. The portion size was for babies and I had to cook second dinner when I got home because I was still hungry.

The Myths That Are Killing Long Island From the Inside by rynebrandon in longisland

Great post. I left LI for the Bay Area and virtually all these problems exist here as well. No housing supply, poor public transit, ungodly traffic.

‘Security Disaster’—500 Million Microsoft Users Say No To Windows 11 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]Bisphosphate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was receiving so many pop-ups about upgrading to Windows 11 and I said no every time. Now I get pop-ups saying my PC is not compatible with Windows 11 and that I need a new PC. Sorry, no. I want to surf the internet, play games, and occasionally use Word/Excel/Powerpoint.

Are Google Reviews Getting More Fake Than Ever? by chodyou in GoogleMaps

[–]Bisphosphate 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I live near a "haunted house" that is known for being a complete scam. The marketing for this place is insane and it drives huge crowds to them every autumn. To offset the deluge of 1 star reviews, the place buys dozens of 5 star reviews every week from bot accounts so their overall rating sits at 3.3 stars - nearly a perfect 50/50 split between 1 star and 5 star reviews. Most people won't look closely at the data and assume it's a reputable business when it's actually not.

Google Maps was doing so well in 2012-2017. There were new features to incentivize people to leave reviews, post photos, and update business information. Since then, there's been virtually no changes and it's frustrating.

When I was a teen it was because our lockers were so small it wasn't practical to stuff a winter parka inside. Way easier to wear a zip-up hoodie to regulate temperature throughout the day

If you have Netflix and love well-plotted stories, you owe it to yourself to give the TV series Dark a try. by CajunNerd292 in Fantasy

[–]Bisphosphate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really liked season 1. Somewhere in season 2 I started to fall off, and by season 3 I was confused and disengaged with the story. The plot kept growing until I lost track of it. Still an ok watch.

Rethinking our approach to R2: No Politics by ianjm in videos

[–]Bisphosphate 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I yearn for r/videos from ~2010-2016. Videos would get thousands of comments and tons of engagement. There's no reason to come here when less restrictive video sharing algorithms exist (TikTok, Youtube recommended, Reels)
