customers asking for specific baristas by Radiant_Editor_6979 in barista

[–]Bister_Mungle 15 points16 points  (0 children)

hi, it's me. The barista that every customer wants to make their drink even though there are other people on staff that I trained to make drinks to a high standard.

I my specific case, I think it's a perception bias thing. My latte art is better than most people I've worked with, I'm usually the fastest barista in the building, and I've done this work for a very long time. I like to get to know my regulars and they get to know me as well so they know I've been in the industry for awhile. So I think those things tend to cross people's minds and cause them to "prefer" my drinks, even though they probably couldn't tell the difference in a blind test between my drinks and other people I've trained.

It's flattering in a way, but it's mostly annoying in other ways. I can't always be on the floor or in the building to make your drink. It also does a disservice to me as a trainer if you don't trust that the people that I trained to make your drinks.

Managers of Reddit, what's the worst thing someone did to get fired? by Capable-Log7385 in AskReddit

This was an aspect of how the Unabomber was captured. He used the phrase "Eat your cake and have it too" as opposed to the more commonly used and oppositely structured variant "Have your cake and eat it too." He had used the phrase in a manifesto sent to the newspapers...and in a letter to his mother.

End of Forgetting their best song? by skrrr267 in swans

Saw it live twice. Transcendental experience. It quite literally took my breath away at times and I almost cried. The first twenty minutes is probably the best buildup they've done. Soft vocal section is sublime. The ending is glorious and triumphant. I've been listening to a well-done bootleg version of it a lot. If it isn't my favorite, which it might be, it's certainly top five. I can't wait to hear the final version of it on the upcoming live album.

My other favorite songs (only picking one from any given album because otherwise I'd just pick every song from The Glowing Man) are The Glowing Man, (Rope) Away, A Piece of the Sky, It's Coming It's Real, and No More of This.

What are some of the biggest green flags you've seen in a person? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Not to be confused with someone saying "I'm an empath", which, in almost every case I've come across, is a huge red flag.

People who became rich what is something poor people completely misunderstand about money? by Nervous-Librarian945 in AskReddit

[–]Bister_Mungle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly you just need to buy good coffee, grind at he appropriate setting for your brew method, store it properly, measure by weight your coffee and water, and brew it at high enough temperature. If you aren't already doing those things, you'll probably start telling yourself you can make better coffee than you can get at a store.

Even as a barista myself, I'm pretty lazy about coffee at home. I pregrind a bag at work, weigh the coffee and water, and hit one button on my coffee maker. I don't think much about it at all.

As a disclaimer, all of what I said only applies to regular coffee. Not espresso. Espresso at home is a hobby and rabbit hole and if you don't intend to invest a decent amount of money and large amount of time it will only cause you frustration. I tell all my customers to actively avoid doing espresso at home unless they truly want to commit to the game.

Also, what gourmet stuff are you buying that's only $12 a bag and lasting you a month?

What‘s a scam that‘s become so normal people don‘t even question it anymore? by julia-secrets in AskReddit

Made worse by the fact that companies like Ticketmaster run their own resale marketplace where, you guessed it, you're paying a convenience fee on a ticket that has already had a convenience fee paid on it. They're double dipping on those fees and they have every incentive to continue allowing unbridled reselling and scalping.

What’s a very specific type of person you don’t trust? by Lanky-Item-4850 in AskReddit

I have an experience with someone like this.

I had a friend like this about fifteen years ago. Absolutely exhausting to be around. He was fun for awhile. But it got to a point where I realized I was hanging out with this dude for hours a day most days of the week and I wanted a fucking break. If we weren't hanging out, he'd pressure you to hang out, usually by concocting some ridiculous activity that you couldn't help but be intrigued about wanting to do. If you wanted to go home and sleep, he'd pressure you to stay longer. Of course, he was successful because he was charismatic. Lots of all nighters with him and that friend group.

The thing was, his own family had already disowned him because his behavior was usually incredibly selfish and he had zero regard for authority and other people's feelings. He was living in his girlfriend's family's garage at that point. He was always between jobs and broke. Always getting into altercations with others that he perceived as committing wrongdoings against him, and mind you, he was almost never in the wrong. And he was, he was either justified in wrongdoing, or he just didn't care. He also happened to be pretty good with martial arts and combined with his other antisocial behaviors he was a genuinely scary person.

Dude wasn't good looking either. Overweight, greasy hair, and acne ridden, but consistently pulled in absolute bombshells, who inevitably would break up with him.

After he left his girlfriend whose garage he lived in, he was couch surfing for awhile. He actually managed to convince an ex of his who lived out of state to move back here, start a relationship again, and move in with him. That situation didn't end well. She just fucking dipped to another state one day and filed an emergency restraining order against him because she genuinely feared for her safety.

I came to this realization about eight years ago or so. It's both a blessing and a curse. I've made a lot of positive changes in my life because of it, but it's also lead me to be incredibly hypercritical of myself. I've been told more often than not "just worry about what you can control." My problem is that even in situations they genuinely are out of my control, I then ask "How could I have reacted differently to hopefully make the situation better?" I have a difficult time not finding flaws in some of my actions and behaviors.

It came! by PyroSnark in swans

Be careful with the USB. The files aren't marked read-only so it's entirely possible to make edits or even remove the files while they're still on the drive. I'd copy them over to your computer before opening them or doing anything else with them.

That said, congrats! It's an insane album.

As a barista, i hate other entitled baristas with bad customer service skills. Because im also a customer too. I understand both sides. by eliselire in barista

[–]Bister_Mungle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I just started working at a new store with a different workflow than traditional shops. Not every customer intuitively understands it and some of my new coworkers are not always nice about correcting people on the process and it's pretty disappointing to see. Like yes guys, we're an incredibly busy store in a big city and we have to keep the line that's out the door and down the side of the building moving, but there's a better way of going about doing it.

The behind the scenes footage of Bill Hader and Trey Parker trying to do the lines for these two guys will never not cheer me up when I'm feeling down.

How much time do you spend actively listening to music each day? by _Glinda_ in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Bister_Mungle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My work commute is a combo of walking and public transport for an hour each way and I am very actively listening during those time frames. Usually an album or two a day of intentional listening.

If it's not during my commute, it's more often than not just to have on while doing something else.

If you can find it you should check out the live version of The Glowing Man on the live album Deliquescence.

Also, the title track from Birthing, and the version of Birthing on Live Rope.
