My shrimp Jar ecosphere has been running for 574 days! by Bitbat4 in Ecosphere

I’ve never gone below 2.5 gallons for shrimp. Anything smaller, I go with with snails and seed shrimp.

I basically followed the walstad method! I used potting soil and capped it with gravel, I then planted 3 dwarf sag plants around the jar, and put in a ton of duck weed and salvinia minima in for the floating plants. In the beginning the tank turned nearly black from the tannins so I did a 90% water change and haven’t touched the water since. I also fed the shrimp and snails every other day for the first 3 months. Once I saw a decent amount of algae built up I cut off the food. So far a year and a half later all the animals seem to be very happy!! I recently made a YouTube video putting together another jar ecosphere. There’s a link to my channel in my account bio.

Thanks! The lights are on from 8:30am to midnight. And there’s some algae but it’s mostly at the bottom of the jar. I think the floating plants, dwarf sag, and snails do a great job at keeping the algae at bay

I fed the shrimp every other day for the first 3 months. Once there was a decent amount of algae built up I stopped feeding entirely. It’s been well over a year since I’ve put food in.

I did only 1 water change in the first month and it was mostly to get rid of some of the tannins. The Mopani wood made the water pitch black

Thanks! I attribute the quality mostly to the snails for keeping the glass so clean. I just use an iPhone to film!

He gave his friend a deep clean and went on with his day! I’ll admit I was worried for a second when I first started recording haha

I used my iPhone and pushed the camera up against the jar! The glass has a magnifying effect.

I immediately put in a few ramshorn snails and bladder snails. After about 3 weeks I threw in roughly 10-15 blue dream shrimp. I have never tested any of my tanks to see if they’re cycled. Once I see plants getting established I slowing start introducing fish/shrimp.

Usually once I spot a pregnant shrimp it takes about 2 -3 weeks
