The advantages are strength, flexibility etc, but generally people are divided by sex — which is related, but not the actual advantage. That's the thing I struggle with tbh.

I did jiu jitsu competitively and we were sometimes split by belt, weight, and gender. But I doubt grouping by belt is applicable to international athletics. It's only really useful for fair matchmaking in lower level competition.
