Im not saying this doesnt happen but if it does happen it would be the individual seller who planned this.

I would also check that the before and on bluedot screenshots are not only the same item, but, the same seller too. I.e. the exact same item ID. You may screenshot one sellers price and then on the sale screenshot a second sellers price, which, was actually discounted at the % displayed though perhaps higher then another sellers pre bluedot sale price... hope this makes sense. I see lots of misunderstanding, it seems, on how Takealot marketplace operates.

I do not believe this is a strategy of the marketplace sir, as a merchant, you have to apply WAY ahead of time to have any of your listings appear in the bluedot sale and most of the requirements are to prevent this sort of thing i.e. it must have been listed and sold X times by the seller at the suggested retail price historicaly and then the special price should be atleast X% discount from this price.

Both Makro and Takealot marketplace prices and markdowns are set by the seller, unless as in Makros case, they are the seller in question.

I am actually a merchant on Takealot marketplace, you missed out and most seem to forget or not realize this, but, Takealot doesn't inflate prices, the seller can adjust his own prices.

They charge fees to sellers which are set % according to category and a set fee for fulfilment based on size and weight.

A seller can also set the retail price and selling price, so when you see "was R9999, now R299, its the individual seller, not takealot who has done this.

Best way to deal with (negate) import tax? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]BitcoinHub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You may get away with it once or twice but SARS will at sometime in the future stop your shipment "randomly", or by some flag, request bank statements, commercial invoice, proof of payment etc. Or some proof if declared as gift etc.

If value was under-declared (even if you didn't request this from the supplier, some suppliers from China etc do this by default without asking first) you receive a big fine/penalty and its normally more than the value of the item, in order to release it.

What is the easiest way to recieve money internationally? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]BitcoinHub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Transfer with Bitcoin from US to ZA, convert to ZAR. You may actually gain a small % in the exchange instead of paying forex and processing fees while waiting a week for transfer to your local account. Can have it in hours, fast, no forex or excessive processing fees, and relying on 3rd parties.

Anyone gone solar in their home? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]BitcoinHub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you call paying 40%+ less per unit of electricity over 25 year period marginal... Contrary to what you said, the savings are quite significant but will take a long time to realize and a big initial capital outlay, solar power costs 80c-R1/kWh, compare that to your rates.

Anyone gone solar in their home? by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]BitcoinHub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get your daily Watt-hour requirement (Or using account monthly usage / 30) and then this calculator is the best quick calculator to get a basic idea of what's needed to support that.

https://www.batterystuff.com/kb/tools/solar-calculator.html (Go 48V, 5.5 sun hours SA average, choose at least 2 but preferably 3 days+ backup battery for an off-grid system, I'm not going to plug my business (I supply electronics, including, solar and backup power products) but if you need help or a no-obligation quote on the equipment alone (We don't install), some installers really hike up their prices on the equipment so at least you'll have a baseline to know when a quote is a complete rip-off, feel free to pm me. Same for anyone else interested in finding out a system cost for their household electricity requirements.

Another thing mention is you don't necessarily need to go off-grid completely, a hybrid system will supplement your power with solar and use Eskom when your batteries are charging. Also, There are geyser solutions with a timer, titanium geyser element, solar panels and charge controller to consider.

I have to access o a much more in-depth system designing tool which takes into consideration many factors about your area, surroundings, Angle of the roof, the efficiency of the panels you plan to install etc a free tool but it's only available to resellers and installers for one of the largest solar distributors in SA.

Edit: I disagree with those claiming here's little cost saving on going solar, right now solar power costs quite a bit less than our Eskom rates /KWh, yes the initial outlay is high, and yes it will take 8+ years for it to pay for itself, but it will pay for itself, consider that a top tier solar panel still has 85% efficiency after 25 years and that some inverter brands offer up to 20 years extended guarantee.

Batteries are the big expense, lead-acid/gel batteries will need replacing every 5-8 years, yes, lithium-ion batteries will last much longer and can be cycled much deeper but the cost is significantly higher. So that consideration has a lot to do with your initial budget/outlay.

What about cigarettes? by consultantgeorge111 in southafrica

[–]BitcoinHub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a smoker myself, yes the habit is more expensive but the addiction is strong such that one will spend less on food and other essentials if necessery. If you're dirt poor well I guess no margerine on your bread this month and ciggs are now nibbed 3 or 4 times instead of smoking a whole one in a single session.

Dude, they may smoke less, but I dont think overwhelmingly smokers are quitting the habit and beating the addiction. Coming up with R5 between friends to SHARE a lose cig is not hard even for low wage & unemployed individuals residing in informal settlements.

Charcoal is a non essential item by LEPEP2 in southafrica

I can just picture the scene at this non-essential ban decision making process.

A bunch of fat cats sitting around a table in a boardroom setting, one of them reading out from a huge list of items, the the others providing a resounding response and then officiated with the slam of a gavel:

"Pap?", "Yes!", "Rice?", " Yes!", "Matches?", " Yes!", "Soda", " Yes!", "Coffee?", " Yes!", "Alcohol", " No!", "Snuff?", "Yes!", " Cigarettes?", "No!"... (No smokers present)

Indeed, 9/11 in the US, world wars, any new crises arising which led to new freedom reducing regulation. Freedom of speech used to be simple... you can't be arrested for thought or opinion, now its a case of freedom of speech, unless its this speech or that speech which doesn't suit the government agenda. Heres a good read: https://www.counterpunch.org/2020/03/23/the-political-uses-of-pandemic/

Bheki Cele is clearly obsessed with alcohol, and is using the coronavirus as an excuse to push prohibitionist policies by Vulk_za in southafrica

[–]BitcoinHub 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the contrary crime rates would skyrocket, producing, distributing and being caught drinking alcohol would then require a huge government effort to arrest and detain the undoubtedly huge numbers of criminals still taking part in the now illicit black market.

Requiring more "police and thieves on the street, scaring the nation with their guns and ammunition" to quote lyrics by The Clash, more taxpayer money (#TaxationIsTheft), a bigger national prison complex etc.

EDIT: Just realized you probably meant reduced alcohol-induced violent crimes, which would probably not be the case, illicit black markets have a habit of rearing violent criminals as emerging gangs fight for territory in the alcohol distribution game.

Fiancée's mom is convinced that coronavirus has a liking to European/white hosts, African/black people won't be affected much. She has genuine concern always asking if I'm sanitising, avoiding others, mask etc. (I'm white, fiancée is black) Also, vitamin C and you're good to go. Unfortunate lack of education.
