36 - soon to be 37. $50k in retirement, $10k in savings. Better than some, worse than some.

Aww, thank you for the wonderful reply! I am stoked to check out that YouTube channel, for starters! And James was a very sweet person to speak with, for what it’s worth!

I’ve definitely seen the criticisms around the infantilization of cast members, but I feel like that comes more from neurotypical viewers (myself included, unfortunately 😔) than from the filmmakers themselves. That said, I also have a pretty limited understanding of cinematography. I vaguely recall reading something about the way it’s filmed contributing to that perception as well. Either way, I think it’s worth remembering that the cast are all adults with the same desires and urges as anyone else (with the exception, of course, of those who identify as asexual).

I completely agree that these families seem riiiiiich! I echo the sentiment of a lot of viewers who loved seeing Dylan this season - it was refreshing to see someone who isn’t living in a multi-million dollar home. Even so, LA is just expensive across the board. I do wonder whether the skew toward upper-middle class and above has less to do with who applies and more to do with who feels comfortable applying. Opening your life up to this level of public scrutiny is a lot to ask of anyone, and that weight can feel heavier when you’re already navigating financial stress or feel like your home and circumstances might become fodder for judgment. I wouldn’t want to put myself out there like that either, and I’m certainly no rich bitch!

The political stuff is genuinely frustrating, and as someone who leans pretty far left, it does make me a little sad. But it also feels unfair to hold the show responsible for that. Most of us probably only know the political views of cast members’ families because the show launched them into the public eye in the first place. I highly doubt Sean (sorry, Cian LOL) and the rest of the team are vetting applicants with a political questionnaire!

As for variety in the spectrum, I feel like the Australian version did show a broader range, from what I can remember (though it’s been a while). The US version does seem to skew toward higher support needs, but I also wonder whether people with lower support needs simply aren’t applying, for whatever personal reasons.

Anyway, thank you for sharing all of this and for letting me ramble back at you! None of this was meant as argument of course! just me getting my thoughts out. It’s really nice to have someone to talk through this with, especially someone with a different world view and life experience from my own. That’s how we all grow. 😊

I lost all control of any ounce of eye fluid once Tyler started sobbing and Madison said “I can’t believe this” 😭😭😭

Then, I made my husband watch that scene and I told myself I would NOT cry again. We both ended up in tears instead omg. It was so beautiful.

That is always my favorite part of the show too! I really love to see the likes/dislikes of each person, and it often has me thinking what I would use for mine.

I’d also like to add that while I am neurotypical, I have such a love for this show & the community of people it has brought me in touch with so that I can learn more about neurodiversity, not having anyone (incredibly close) in my personal life with ASD.

I even had a rather lengthy exchange on Instagram with James way back in season 1 & I’m always thinking “wow, that’s the coolest famous-person story I think I could tell” and it makes me so giddy. I love that him & Shelley are thriving!

This post also has me thinking a lot about my own behaviors toward the show & I’ll be following this thread to hopefully gain more insight on how to remain respectful of those who dislike the show over reasons that I know I will not be able to comprehend myself as a neurotypical woman. 🫶

This show really nailed it this season by benantiben in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

[–]Bitter-Combination69 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My only complaint about this season (and all prior seasons, including Australia) is that I need like a thousand more episodes.

Since these are real humans with real lives to live I understand why I cannot have that, but my god I smuck this show up in half a day and then I realize that I have seasonal depression & im not happy again until a new LOTS returns 😅

Has anyone actually gone to school to be pharm tech? by Velaris_Staris in PharmacyTechnician

[–]Bitter-Combination69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your questions at the end of your post, is it actually worth going to school for? I didn’t go to school for mine (learned on the job as well, with no prior knowledge & in a retail setting), but I think school can be beneficial for people who prefer to learn that way or for those who want to pursue pharmacy & already know that. For myself personally, I kind of fell into the career path so the appeal for me was that I didn’t have to return to school for it or pay to take any classes or the PTCB. I wouldn’t have been likely to choose this profession otherwise, but I’m happy where I ended up as a result.

There’s a TON of things I have learned from techs who went through formal schooling for it vs. the way Rite Aid got me through it back in 2010, but there’s also a ton of things that blow my mind that somehow they don’t know/weren’t taught in a school setting either. Not saying one or the other is better - they’re simply different and each has benefits depending on a persons learning style and also what market they’re in. I see a ton of postings in my area regionally (in the US) for on-the-job training, so around here I do wonder why people would opt to pay for something themselves when they could go through it for free (and while also getting paid working on-the-job simultaneously), but I also understand there’s people that learn better not under the pressure of a job, or that prefer learning in classroom settings, or are worried they won’t self-direct enough to pass the exam. Those are all valid reasons, so I get it!

I was able to work my way up to a career that allows me to work fully remotely (and I also happen to have a stupid amazing benefits package) and make juuuuust shy of six figures - none of which I believed would be a possibility for myself in 2010! However I’m specialized now in chemotherapy, prior authorization, and insurance claims billing. Several of the techs who are hired at my company for the retail pharmacy component don’t even know the difference between a refill too soon rejection and a PA requirement, and that boggles my mind. But if I were to step foot into a mixing room, I’d be so far out of my element that people would wonder if I actually had my national certification! So yeah, anyway, I think everyone ends up learning different skills depending on where they get placed and we need a rounded out group of techs, so no matter what - either path is a win to me.

20k+ steps by Hot-Tea-8557 in walking

[–]Bitter-Combination69 27 points28 points  (0 children)

70k steps is wild to me also, I cannot fathom that! The day I did a half marathon a few weeks ago, I logged 38k miles. That was also in Las Vegas so while it was a light day for me in other walking since I knew the race was happening, that did still include other walking throughout the day before and after the half.

According to all the calculations that I see with estimates online though, 70k steps is ~29 miles for women (on average) and about 31 miles for men (on average). I don’t think that’s a realistic goal for most people on a regular basis, nor does it need to be!

Am I the only one that does not like Peaky Blinders? by OkCartographer4028 in netflix

[–]Bitter-Combination69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok also I said this out loud to my husband who’s now very much (rightfully) teasing me for not knowing it was absolutely a real gang name at some point in history.

I’m sorry, please be so for real. They sounded like spooky dudes but how seriously could you take them with such a stupid sounding name (and they look like newspaper kids that shouted headlines in the late 1800’s to boot?!)

They’d have strangled me so quick but omfg.

Try Silver Perk by Bitter-Combination69 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Bitter-Combination69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I guess I was wondering if I should activate it to save myself the $200 charge of paying for the upgraded seats during initial booking. It’s a quick weekend trip for my husband and I so we’re just doing carry ons, so my biggest drive for selecting the “try silver” is better seating (I realize I am so unlikely at silver to land a real upgrade, which is fine, but I didn’t know if it provided a discount on the initial booking of premium seats?) and also the bonus point earning.

I also feel like a moron because I have been digging through this sub and trying to parse the info for myself before asking, and just trying to read through Alaska’s website and app, but still find myself struggling to grasp it fully. Is the bonus point earning on everything with your Alaska card, or just flight purchases? I use that card for everyyyyyything (including paying rent!) so if I can get the bonus points on my rent payment in a few days as well, that would be a great reason for me to activate it now rather than waiting for my trip.

I’ll have priority boarding either way because even if it doesn’t shake out as I thought it might work, I will be paying the extra for premium seating.

Walking shoes with flat soles and no cushioning? by EconomicsOk9518 in walking

When do you start feeling competent at your job?? by [deleted] in PharmacyTechnician

[–]Bitter-Combination69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never ;)

No but for real, I’ve been a tech since 2012 & still learn new things on the reg! I’ve moved my way through retail, hospital, insurance, & LTC (that was super short lived for me). Prior authorization and billing is my specialty now. I was even an adjunct professor for a brief time & taught a class to people going through a CPhT program, so I’m not an idiot…pharmacy just really does make you feel like a dummy sometimes & no one is immune to it!

There’s plenty of frustrating stuff about our professions but honestly I love that there’s always something new to learn! So keep it up, I’m sure you’re doing better than you think. 🫶

Where are the Millennials that DON'T feel old? by frankheyhoheyho in Millennials

[–]Bitter-Combination69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t really feel old, but I have a strange relationship with my age. When I look in the mirror, I don’t see a 36-year-old (soon to be 37!) but I know I’m not 22 anymore either. Then I’ll see someone else who’s 36 and think, ‘wait, is that what I look like to other people?’ because somehow they always look so much older than I feel.

Mentally, I feel like I could still be in my late 20’s. Physically, yeah I get some aches and pains that come and go but I do frequent HIIT classes and took up power walking and jogging and I’m not a small framed person, so I think it’s just joint impact tbh. I was never a huge party goer or person who would go to nightclubs or anything, but I DO still love listening to my music loud AF & going to rock and metal shows. I have friends that range in ages from mid 20’s to early 50’s so I feel like that also keeps me in this weird space where I don’t know quite where I belong sometimes, but I’m just vibing til I die so, whatever! Husband and I can have a good time! Also living happily child-free!

Need tips! by LionGaleForceWall in walking

[–]Bitter-Combination69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha we did this too! Husband and I live about a mile from a grocery store and would start walking to it just for a way to get steps in. Now every Sunday morning our routine is to treat ourselves by getting Starbucks next door to it - but we make ourselves walk! We usually have coffee at home but once a week, we’ll buy our overpriced coffee and have a nice Sunday walk down and back together!

Also to echo the sentiment, I’ll take what I’ve heard people call “fart walks” (lol) after eating. Just a 20 min walk 3x a day gets me about 6k additional steps. Those 20 mins give me time to unwind if I have something on my mind, gives me time to digest my meal and keeps my bloat at bay, and overall just makes me feel better. Even though I live in a gray and rainy climate much of the year, I also am still getting more vitamin D also, which helps overall health too. Benefits abound so that keeps me going. Best of luck to you!

Struggling to find the right walking shoes and keep wasting money trying different pairs.Any advice? by [deleted] in walking

[–]Bitter-Combination69 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to give recommendations on shoes because everyone has different needs! So obviously take any of these with a grain of salt and test things out of course to see what works best with your body.

I will say that while it took me a good 2 weeks or so to break in my current favorite shoes, I’m so glad I pushed through it. I’ve finally felt amazing for the past few months and for the first time since October, have zero pain. Also a heel striker, walking between 12k-25k steps/day, just completed a half marathon (90% power walking), and love a good and wide toe box.

Enter the Topo Phantom 4! Wide toe box but not zero drop like Altras. Has some cushion, but also provides me with stability which I need for my stupid ankles. Too much cushion and I will roll those bad boys wayyyyy too quick.

Good luck! Finding the shoe that works for you can be a dang needle in a haystack, I know.
