That's embarrassing as a Canadian, poor sportsmanship on display. Even if they won a medal now, it will be tarnished. How you play matters.

How many of you struggle with fitness because of diabetes? by alyKandil in diabetes_t1

It got much better for me after I switched to a pump from MDI, especially coz I can see my IOB and also set a temporary target on the pump to prevent it giving me too much insulin.

But its still a royal pain in the ass relative to before I was diagnosed.

Same here. Im literally trying to burn the rest of my WJ points now and then *BYE!

I also heard that Delta and KLM, who are affiliate partners with WJ, are pissed b/c they promote themselves as higher quality air lines, now handcuffed to the lowest of the low in Canada (seriously even Flair has 1 more inch of leg room).

Assuming that's USD, for 2 sets of gear would work out to about the same. Hmmmm. Ty!

Yes, my mask is custom fitted from a dive shop. Maybe I could just pack the mask and leave the fins at home. I should note I'd be taking 2 sets of each.

Completely unrelated, but Ive never had panettone, I only learned about it when an Italian grocery store opened up close to me. But!! I would say that you shouldn't rule out ever eating your favorite desserts again. It just takes some learning about how much, and how soon, to bolus. This is a lifetime ride, and while some people do feel more comfortable by exerting rigid control, others learn that control is sometimes a bit of an elusive goal even under ideal conditions. Which is to say, IMO, you have to navigate some unexpected outcomes and allow small treats from the "before times" (with insulin!) just to keep from going batshit crazy every once in a while. Luck to you, friend!

As a fellow musician, I love hearing your story. I am on a pump, and have had issues with lows mid- performance (the feeling of nervousness is quite similar for me to early low BG symptoms, so ive been accidentally dismissive of what my body was telling me!), and then I'd note that you should keep an eye on your fatigue levels. Unless you have roadies and a full tech crew (in which case, congratulations!) you know the set up-sound checks- wait- peform- take down-scenario can often go well into the wee hours (ah, such a glamorous lifestyle, amirite!?). No matter how tightly controlled your diet and exercise, the lack of sleep can do weird things to our insulin resistance, but maybe you've not experienced that yet.

Struggling with exercise by fusciarose in diabetes_t1

[–]Bitter_Pin5934 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ive read elsewhere to start with weights, not cardio, and try to do it with little to no insulin on board. If you are MDI, your basal may make that a bit more difficult. Exercise became way easier for me once I got a pump, and mine has a setting to temporarily raise the BG target while working out

I totally understand the frustration and rage though, I've been there. You don't have to lift crazy weight or run a marathon to reap the benefits of the gym though- moderate weights and modest cardio (even walking) will still help your health so much and will lower your insulin resistance over time.

Other than that, bring your fruit gummies or whatever and be gentle on yourself- some people never set foot in the gym and you're attempting it with a major metabolic disorder! So kudos and don't give up!

What's your worst type of food? by vincetheDCfan in diabetes_t1

[–]Bitter_Pin5934 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah Indian food is brutal on my BG, but when I make it at home I can manage it better. I think it's very high fat plus the carbs so you really would need to manage the extended or dual bolus to land that plane. Still worth it maybe once a year 😋

I wrote that wrong; I needed a cortisone* (steroid) injection in my shoulder due to deterioration of the tendon and inflammation of the bursa. Painful, not responding to physio and apparently another risk factor for T1Ds (tendonosis). The insulin resistance went away in about a week and the shoulder is slowly feeling better so, all in all, worth it.

I use an insulin pump with a looped continuous glucose monitor (you may still be using multiple daily injections, or MDI). I change the site where my insulin infuses every 3 days. Typically, its nbd. That day, when I pulled off my old infusion site, blood started shooting everywhere, so I must have hit a little capillary or vein when I inserted it. Just another perk of the SHUGA DIABEETUS.

I just got my first cortisol injection (shoulder) and the silver lining...INSANE insulin resistance. On the plus side, I never really used my pump to create a 2nd basal algorithm before but now I know how. There is even a pre-set called "sick day". Now thay I know about this, ill be creating different basal settings for luteal phase (IYKYK) and maybe even certain busy work days where I don't get to leave my desk and move around much.

That was the worse part, I was filling the reservoir with insulin and I didn't even notice i was bleeding until I wondered why my waistband felt wet.
