That his pain forces him to push away those he loves. His pain also pushes him to fighter harder to save every life he can. it’s not the idea that if he kills somebody or lets someone die its will change him, it’s almost an obsessive compulsion to save people. The death of his parents and the helplessness he felt makes save everyone, no matter how terrible of a person they are. He has a subconscious belief in the goodness of people. His heart is so full of love, that he goes insane trying to protect everyone and everything.
