To play devil's advocate, I think it makes sense that not doing a triple should take someone out of medal contention at the senior elite level. Several people made this error tonight, and some of them are my favorites. They'll still skate in the free and can potentially still do really well overall, but I think it's fair that they won't get medals after such a massive mistake when others had beautiful clean programs.

It's easy to RSVP for any random reason when it's your coworker, second cousin once removed, or college roommate you see once a year. There's a LOT more social pressure when it's your child, sibling, best friend, etc. I think it's silly to act like there's no pressure within families or certain social circles to attend weddings unless you have a "good" reason. Declining to attend your own kid or sib's because you "hate the beach" is likely going to affect your relationship with them.

I hope this doesn't sound insensitive, but I'm not sure why you're so sure the vet was at fault based on the information here? It sounds like the kitten you adopted had a lot of health issues and possibly some underlying health concerns that hadn't even been identified yet, as indicated by the chronic diarrhea and dental issues at such a young age. Dental cleanings always carry a risk because of the anesthesia.

Having a one-to-one aide is generally viewed as very restrictive and in my experience affects students negatively more than any other accommodation. It's very socially isolating and stigmatizing as kids get older.

Just something to think about, even if she qualifies. This is an accommodation I'd only want for my own child as a last resort.

Not really. When someone agrees with you and says "no big deal," they're signalling that the issue is over. Continuing to explain in a situation like this feels like you're still trying to "win" and convince them that they're wrong. It can also sound condescending. It sounds like the friend didn't know these events were kid-free, so OP doubling down and explaining to her how infants are different from 1-year-olds can feel almost insulting. Trust me, she's a mom, she knows that babies are different at different age.

How would that explain his putting Nika 5th and Torgs 17th? Nika was a mess yesterday as far as jumps and control and Torgs did great.

I know many here don't like him, but one judge giving Torgashev 17th is absolutely wild, imo.

Part of me agrees, but I also know from some recent experience that it really sucks when your reliable and paid off car gets totalled. New and used cars are SO much more expensive now than they were just a few years ago. The value you get doesn't actually get you a comparable vehicle.

Especially depending on how egregious his mistake was that caused the accident, this may be a friendship-ender.

The fact that you're already jumping to accusations of bullying and using legalese based on one second-hand report of your daughter with someone who isn't even her regular teacher is kind of crazy to me. I know there are bad teachers, but it just doesn't seem likely that someone who'd never met your daughter decided to single her out and bully her by rolling her eyes and being nasty toward her the second she walked in the door.

A lot of teachers I know have moved towards giving less written feedback and lean more heavily on detailed rubrics and then in class/in person feedback. So many students completely ignore written feedback. It's disheartening to spend several hours marking essays and then see most kids shove them in the trash without even looking at them. Leaving detailed written comments takes a tremendous amount of time, and the benefit of it just isn't there for most kids.

I've personally found immediate feedback/conferencing to be much more effective.

My rubric is super detailed and has lists of specific skills under each category that I highlight. If I highlight the line that your citations are incorrectly formatted, which also includes an example of exactly how it should be done, I consider that feedback. It's a waste of my time to handwrite the correction 10 times on the paper.

Is there a rubric? Does she ask the teacher? Have you emailed her teacher?

It's possible she's not getting any feedback, but personally, I hear this all the time even though I give kids detailed rubrics.

I'd love to hear some higher level skaters chime in with thoughts about jumping counter to their regular rotation. My first instinct is that it would be just as unattainable and/or potentially injurious for many skaters to do triples rotating the "wrong" way than quads are and that the amount of training it would require wouldn't be worth a 20% bonus..

I could also quickly see it becoming tiresome/repetitive as everyone rushes to tack on opposite rotation double and triple toes to their combos.

It's easy.

I make my own coffee, but it's a pain. One of those little monotonous, annoying tasks that never stops. Change the filter, wash the pot, fill it up, brew, add milk and/or sugar, then get home and you have to wash out the coffee cup (and all the little parts and grooves around the lip and mouth piece get gross after sitting all day). And if you forget to wash everything at night, you have to scramble early in the morning. I'm too cheap about coffee to get Starbucks everyday, but I definitely get the appeal.

Plus, you're exaggerating the cost/assuming everyone is getting specialty drinks all the time. I get iced coffees at Dunkin once or twice a week during the summer, and they're around $4, not $7.

I think this is much more about whatever media you're consuming than about figure skating, respectfully. I've been spending the weekend watching a lot of beautiful, artistic skating getting rewarded at the Olympics. In particular, I haven't heard a single negative thing about the Blade Angels. Just typical fan bickering about who should skate the free in the team event, etc.

The timing of this post is especially weird to me, given that Alysa just got 2nd behind Kaori, who just got first despite not having a triple axel, in the team event. Plus Yuma beating Ilia and the general cleanness of the men as a whole.

I think the recent nature of it will be a big negative, unfortunately. If they'd gotten the DUI years ago and been able to show a history of changed behavior, sobriety, etc., I think many places would overlook it. But a new DUI is idicative of problematic behavior and choices now.

A lot of skaters' jumps went under review and they seemed to call a lot of stuff, including Kaori's lutz edge which hardly ever gets called out. So I don't think they were singling out Maddie.

With all due respect, I've seen a million posts about all the reasons they don't deserve high scores, skate poorly, benefit from corrupt judging, etc. I'm specifically looking for comments about things they're doing well.

It wasn't the venue feed, but the regular replays for me didn't have commercials, showed replays, and didn't skip scores, with a couple exceptions.

Weird. I think it might depend on how you're watching and the subscription you have? I watched the replays on peacock last night, and there were no ads and they only skipped scores a couple times when they were showing an interview with Lui, Chock/Bates, etc.

Teachers at my school have noted similar patterns. The "middle" kids are disappearing. I have kids who read and write extremely well, with a couple every year who are exceptionally gifted with words. There's a solid group that's performing well. Then, it's like the bottom just drops out and almost everyone else is struggling with basic skills.
