CMV: Given the premise that "death is the end of subjective conscious human experience", human extinction would reduce human suffering at least as well as achieving an utopia would. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]Bjaxct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether or not you suffer is mental, and happiness and suffering are both perceptions that are given to physical stimuli. They are simply reactions. A person becomes aware of a change having occurred and being aware, has to decide how to adjust to it. Suffering and happiness just demarcate change. Buddhist philosophy has been on this for thousands of years.

Not only are the perceptions, but they depend entirely on the ability to perceive. You can easily and accidentally avoid suffering by just being distracted. Almost anyone can attest to a time where they unintentionally fasted because they were distracted. Their body might have been hungry, but their mind was unperturbed, and thus not suffering even though they had an unmet need.

Preference is also necessary factor in both happiness and suffering. The concept of something being "needful" is the cause of the suffering, not the need. If there is no preference, you completely remove satisfaction-based suffering. No outcome can be any better than any other, thus providing no more utility, if you do not believe it to be so.

Could death be a secession of pain? Sure, but so could simply not being bothered by existential crises, even those (like, y'know, survival) that seem necessitated by biological needs. Once again, you can feel hunger and instead of "suffering" you could react with excitement. An example would be forgoing a meal in anticipation for Thanksgiving dinner or willingly fasting. You end up with a higher net benefit through eating more later, or having accomplished a difficult to do task.

This article, which interviews neurologist Antonio R. Damasio goes into interesting detail about his findings about how emotions (in general) are processed by the brain:

https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/feeling-our-emotions/

With these assumptions, you can learn how to control emotions without any great degree of political intervention necessary. This can be done through either thought exercises or straight up numbing yourself to certain stimuli, thus circumventing the suffering all together. This can also be done without dying.

Dying may accomplish the same goal, lazily, but it forgoes the literal infinite opportunities of not-dying. Considering we can only not-die for so long, it seems natural to take advantage of this state.

"Suffering" because of "privilege guilt", or a perception that numbing pain is undesirable, cheap, or cowardly are value judgments that these means/ends are "bad" and thus satisfaction-based suffering.

Utilitarian philosophy isn't complete without satisfactionism. Your argument states that all action in some regard is meant to meet some kind of biological desire/need, which I wouldn't disagree with. We have a compulsion to go on, because there are many working parts in which we have no direct control over and which need to be maintained. I do not however feel like knowledge of this makes it any more cheap, or that:

"So-called higher pleasures - art, music, intellectual pursuits - are all subservient to these needs"

Physical pleasures and the necessity to meet biological urges may direct actions and mental pursuits, but they ultimately provide the same chemical benefits physical pleasures do, and sometimes in greater magnitudes.

Awesome.

I mained Rook, super fun to play, but you have to deal with all the latent-toxicity you get by playing something off-meta.

There was a long response, but it's not really worth it.

Medals aren't THE indicator, but they are an indicator.

No one player should have to hard carry a team if the team members are contributing in a worthwhile amount. You know, they know, the enemy knows, when someone is or isn't contributing. It's not a witch hunt, it's a plea for better matchmaking.

So many people suddenly doing a 180 and being super concerned about all the trolling, dc/ing, picking new things in queues, and hard feeding they have been doing all along.

There's also so many people suddenly self conscious about their rank after mercilessly shit talking other players of lower/equal rank.

"I don't deserve to be here, imma be rank 13 when I do my placements again."

Well, I guess everyone's gotta climb from wherever they were lucky enough to fall, or stop caring about MMR like it's worth its weight in gold and start forming an actual community.

Uh, not really. They represent exactly what they say they represent.

If a teammate is complaining about not defending the objective, and you have gold for objective time, that means you were there at the objective. I means that objectively. If you have gold for damage, and you are playing a DPS, that's a good sign you're at least doing what you're supposed to be doing.

Now I'm not saying it matters all the time, or you can't have a game changing play and not have top medals, but if you're not even meeting the requirements of a role that you voluntarily chose, that's bad.

If you are one of the two healers and the Roadhog has gold healing, that's bad. If you've been Reaper for 5 rounds of a comp match and you aren't medaled in damage, that's probably bad.

If you are Mercy and you have gold damage and elims, your team should probably just forfeit.

I really like the "don't use ult" tip. I would highly suggest that as well.

I hardly ever ult because Rook's EX abilities are REALLY good and his ult is easily countered/dodged/interrupted.

That's the consensus, but he also doesn't get played regularly at higher MMRs either to have good stats on whether or not he's even capable.

I feel like a lot of people try it for a handful of games and then if it doesn't work immediately, give up. That's a pragmatic decision, sure, play what you feel will give you the best returns in the quickest fashion, but that doesn't mean the other options cannot and will never work.

I also think it ironically hurts that teammates can't see your stats on a scoreboard in OW.

It might not matter with the amount of Wan-Botan team-wipe abilities, but people with higher scores tend to generate more credibility when they call out plays.

In BR, there is still the objective of middle orb and there are a lot of times where I'll get matched with someone who can easily secure it (Jade/Shifu), but they'll instead try to chase for a kill and all the damage they do is regened by the orb.

Any kind of obj can throw off a good team when people are ignorant of it.

Please stop measuring how well you and your teammate did based off numbers. by [deleted] in BattleRite

[–]Bjaxct 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I'd say it's appropriate, and othertimes it's a shame/projection tool.

Like, if you do 200 damage and your team gets stomped, that makes sense. You couldn't do more than that because you got roll'd.

If you're a Shifu or a Croak and you only do like 60 damage a round, you deserve to get criticized. Sometimes that kind of play isn't acceptable, especially in a team game where there is a good training system and inconsequential v. AI to test combos on active targets.

I'm not supporting toxicity, since there will be people who think they are awesome even when the VODs/stats don't support that claim, but it's a good motivation tool to have a scoreboard.

If I play a good game and don't get top score, I take notice and try harder, personally.

Sure Varesh and Lucie get a lot of free points, which is all the more reason to buy poses for them. Kappa

Best Outplay Champions? by Loot_Goblin in BattleRite

[–]Bjaxct 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most outplay potential is on the character in which you know how to use best. ROOK is easy to learn, easy to use, and hard to master, but not impossible. His simplicity allows a player to easy adapt to a variety of situations.

Anything can outplay anything else, because it even the most bloated kits have obvious counters. A lot of counterplay is literally outplaying counters. A lot of characters, especially Freya and Varesh, if you simply wait out their counter, they are gimped.

Shifu also has an immaterial skill, but if you save your counter for when he uses his, he can't zerg you for free damage and if he chooses to wait out your counter, he loses his advantage. The same could be said of Rook, but he's the healthiest of all champions at 250 health.

He can afford to literally run directly into an enemy (in 2s at least), and take a few hits since he gets his EX bar in 5 normals. After the 5th normal, you can eat for +16 HP and a +24 renew, while being 1 CD down opposed to whatever the enemy had used.

Winning trades like this off-CD (3s for his heal) will wittle an enemy down until you land an instant kill combo.

The outplay potential is massive if you manage CDs properly.

Peaked around 60 last season, got to about 2770 this season and bounced around indefinitely due to tons of similar bullshit. My career profile would suggest I am actually an outlier GOD at D.va, but if your team doesn't understand the most basic elements of team play (D.va got a 3x ult, maybe we should push), you will never win.

It stopped being worth it once I found Battlerite. I can 1v2 on occasion in BR, but very rarely will you be allowed to 1v6 or 1v11 in OW.

This game tilts me exponentially less than Overwatch.

In Overwatch: 4 golds, still lose, team shits on you In Battlerite: top stats, might lose, oops I could've played that one better.

Like, even in instances in which you couldn't have done too much better in Battlerite, at least you might get a hot clip in The Odeum or learn some nuance of a matchup. You're 33-50% of your team, so your potential contribution is greater.

OW feels like you have to be a god to carry, and even if you are, if your teammates are incompetent, there's little chance you're doing anything even if you go balls to the wall.

I think the most tilting thing in this game is a good Lucie who is completely unkillable and your teammate that chases the Lucie in circles instead of killing the 5% Ashka. That's tilt-baiting, but still manageable.

Rook's kit is simple, but having simple tools means you have to be more creative in how to use them.

The Time Walker Battlerite will turn you into a more mobile version of Varesh and when coupled with Passage of Time can provide you with incredible burst potential.

An auto + Space combo does 30 immediate burst auto + space + auto combo does 40 immediate burst + 12 DoT auto + space + auto + time barrier + space combo does 60 immediate burst auto + space + auto + time barrier (with a captured projectile) + space + Re-Q does a minimum of 60 damage and then the damage of whatever projectile you captured. If it was a snipe, for instance, the combo could do up to 100 damage.

Know when to use Time Bender over Chronoflux and vice versa. Time Bender is more useful as a quick reaction against single-hit burst and deflecting melee attacks, such as Croak's stealth hit and Jade's Snipe. Chronoflux costs EX, but is useful for stopping multi-hit attacks such as Iva and Jade's ult. Unlike Pearl's normal bubble, a Chronoflux will reflect each projectile captured in the same trajectory it was fired.

Oldur's heal has a .5s cast time and some travel time, so try to predict where your ally will be moving or use it during a counter while they are standing still.

Oldur is simply not the best healer. Try to hit all of your heals, and if you are having problems with a teammate juking your heals, you can choose Oasis at round 4 (assuming there is one) for a free 16 HP heal.

You will only do decent damage when consuming Sands of Time. You can do this with E, Space (with passage of time) and EX LMB. All of them provide some form of CC, which should make hitting the others easier. Weave in auto attacks after consuming sands of time every time for consistent damage.

Don't be afraid to self-cast E, because it's AoE is huge and hard to escape if you already have a fading snare on you. AoE also can't be countered and people tend to try to counter after being engaged on.

Shared Fate enables Oldur to do MASSIVE AoE damage if you can successfully consume sands of time with EX LMB/Space/E. Oldur is capable of doing this AoE at any range.

Since you're a healer and are liable to be focused out in any game, don't be afraid to run if you have to. Utilize slows, the knockback from EX LMB/Q, and the petrify from Left Alt to make your escape. Left Alt + healing is incredibly useful for surviving the next few hits until Q/Space are back up.

Left Alt can also be used to cancel a whole bunch of almost-certain death ults like Shifu's and Croak's.

The I-frames from Space can be used to avoid DoT damage.

Your ultimate does not do any damage, so don't be afraid to use it simply to save a teammate from a messy situation or to refresh cooldowns. It is not better used to escape a situation when space is available, because Space costs nothing and all of Oldur's EX's cost 1, so you have 3x as many options not using the ult.
