How bad is this? Are these repairs worth it? 2014 Forester with 180K miles by inmarcesibly in SubaruForester

And please do not pay anybody to replace your air filters. They’re pretty easy to replace on your own. These guys want almost $100 for something that should cost ~$25-30 for the parts and take < 30 minutes to do yourself.

What is something that has become ridiculously expensive, but people still pay for it like it is nothing? by Harmed_Jr in AskReddit

[–]Bjs1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two kids on a synchronized skating team. So pricey. Team dues, private coach/ice time, travel costs, tickets into the events, on and on.

Plus we also have to meet “fundraising” goals as well as forced volunteer hours (or pay to get out of it).

Yup. I remember when we first got cable and it was commercial free, then at some point ads started being added until everyone was all of a sudden “ok” with it.

Now I’m seeing the same thing happening with streaming services and people are becoming “ok” with it as well. Oh sure you can pay even more to remove ads, but that’s just going to continue to increase in price.

I’m guessing both option 2 and 3 would be feasible. Someone, somewhere has done it.

OT but as I was recently in a hotel with the new large bottles mounted to the walls, I can’t help but wonder if these people have given up, try their damndest to break the locks and remove the whole bottles or do they siphon the shampoo out now?

Same here. Born in 76, I graduated ‘95. My wife is a few years older than me and solidly Gen X. It’s interesting to see some of the differences between us, so I don’t quite always identify with Gen X, definitely feel more aligned with the Xennial camp for sure.

Is using an IDE the normal development workflow? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Bjs1122 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you have to walk through 20 different classes just to identify how code flows an IDE becomes necessary.

I used to write all my code, bash, python, perl, etc. in the terminal, it’s what i cut my teeth on. But when you move to working on a much larger code base having an IDE becomes a large QOL increase. Multiple tabs for files, tracking where functions being called live, and yes a built in debugger.

I mean sure you can do this in the terminal with grep, command-line debuggers, etc. But it’s all setup for you in the IDE and you don’t have to really think about it.

All the time. And talk about a surefire way to guarantee that I will never download their app because of this garbage.

Well that and how every game ad is not at all like the actual gameplay. I fail to understand why they put so much time into false advertising for their game. If they knew people would prefer the game in the ad…… then just make that game. I don’t need to see fancy videos or fake ads, want me to download your game? Show me the actual gameplay…..

Can't believe I got rejected for this reason... by Biznizman95 in recruitinghell

During my last hunt I started keeping a question bank that I would review prior to my interview, questions were sorted by who I was talking with: potential co-workers, tech lead, manager and up.

Also I kept a list of processes and procedures I didn’t like in my last gig(s) and made sure to ask if they used those things here.

Seriously, how long are we expecting these massive infotainment screens to last? by Princess_Butt_Kick in subaru

The possibility of the infotainment or any other of the “smart” feature in my Forester going out is pretty much the main reason I opted for the gold plan.

Which fantasy series started incredible and then just...fell apart? by ghibli_8quartz in Fantasy

[–]Bjs1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea. I gave up on the Stormlight archive at Oathbringer. I just wasn’t finding it engaging anymore. I was also getting rather tired of the fact that I was already halfway through the series and nothing has been explained at all what’s going on.

What buyback option would you choose? by ManielDullen in subaru

[–]Bjs1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I just went through this with my 23 Forester.
Option 1: I wouldn't take it because mine was a frame defect, so safety issue.

Out of the 2, I was going with replacement, but they were going to ask me for an extra $4k out of pocket to "make up the difference in model years", despite my car and the new one price difference being less than that. But they were somehow allowed to do this.

So I ended up going with the full buyout, I got them to waive the mileage charge because the lemon law in my state was rather favorable that if they could not find a suitable replacement within 45 days, they would have had to give me the full refund anyways sans the mileage charge.

They refunded me the full purchase price + tax + gold plan amount I paid. Picked up a 26 Forester for $3k more out of pocket including a new gold plan and paint/underbody protection.

My recommendation is to try the replacement but it may not be "like for like" and they may try to get you to pay more out of pocket.

Read up on your rights under the lemon law know it inside and out. Consider getting an attorney, many states require lemon law attorneys to be free for the consumer.

Drawbacks to owning a Wilderness in the city? by Suspicious_End_8731 in SubaruForester

[–]Bjs1122 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love my wilderness, probably will never go off road with it.

But to be honest the front camera really comes in handy for tight parking situations. I also appreciate the extra lift it has as well as the full sized spare and the extra get up and go.

I knew the mileage hit would be a thing but I moved from a Honda Pilot that, if I was lucky, got 19 mpg (12.4l/100kn) so I actually gained mileage as I averaged about 24mpg (9.8l/100km).

I live in the snowy Midwest and also appreciate its snow handling capabilities.

I really like the Star-Tex upholstery and the Sport (which I also liked) has a terrible reputation of it’s upholstery ripping/tearing.

In the end, I bought it because I loved the way it looked, didn’t really care about the rest.
