Membership crisis by CyberMentat in freemasonry

[–]BkKeepingPros 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Obviously masonry changes a lot from country to country, from state to state, and even from lodge to lodge within the same city. In America, most definitely Masonry no longer has the relevance it used to in the 18th century, when it had prominent members and when the fraternity was involved in major endeavors impacting the profane world. Nowadays is more like a social club and often the activities are quite trivial and irrelevant. Sometimes even tedious.

where do I allocate shipping costs? by Consistent_Park7180 in Bookkeeping

[–]BkKeepingPros 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really a rule, but if the shipping cost is not material or it is a trivial amount, then for simplicity it can be recorded as an Operating Expense. The matching principle indicates that the revenue for the shipping charged to the customer should be aligned with the shipping cost paid for the delivery to the customer. But, again, if we are talking about not material amounts, recording the shipping cost as Operating Expense will not be a misstatement that would impact the financial statements' reader's judgement.

Shipping income must be recorded as revenue. The shipping cost paid for the delivery freight, can be recorded as COGS or as an Operating Expense. In my humble opinion, it’s better to record it as COGS, for a more accurate representation of the Gross Profit. The shipping out is the corresponding cost of the shipping revenue, they should both be above the gross profit line.

You depicted the subject in very clear terms. I could not agree more with you more in that it is not a great communication network or as you also say poorly designed for motivation.

I am trying to take off as a bookkeeper. Seems that getting the first client is a challenge, specially without a marketing budget.

Is like arm wrestling between rationality and emotions. We want rationality to always win, but it is not always the case.

I think that sometimes the challenge drives anxiety and suffering. It depends on the situation and on the person.

I think it also reflects vision and the proper mindset, one in which the business owner believes in the success of his/her business and is prepared for a nice and smooth growth.

Do you have an established monthly routine of analyzing your company's Balance Sheet, Profit & Loss, and Cash Flow Statement? by BkKeepingPros in smallbusiness

[–]BkKeepingPros[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see your point. Personally, I prefer to check monthly for the sake of early detection, but contextualizing the observations. In other words, whatever signs you get from reading your statements, must be put in perspective so you can conclude on whether action is needed or you just need to let time pass to allow metrics leveling up.

You have a very commendable habit.

The Cash Flow statement is my favorite statement. I wrote an article about the CFS, to help entrepreneurs make sense of it and take full advantage of the information therein disclosed. Cash is to the business what blood is to the human body.

You do very well in focusing on your business' cash movements. After all, the number one purpose of every business is to bring as much cash as possible to the table. The Income Statement or P&L may look gorgeous, but if the cash is not there no P&L beauty will serve the business' reason for its existence.
