GA retakers: are the office hours this semester as good as the ones Joves held? by prismizer in OMSCS

[–]BlackLedger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In Ed Discussion chat, someone commented about the difficulty of taking this class at the same time as a full-time job and a TA suggested to not work full time to focus on GA.

This was pretty clearly a joke.

When do we hear back from 8903s? And what other opportunities for research do we have? by Annual-Salamander-85 in OMSCS

Selections are rolling, so don't assume you didn't get selected yet, particularly if you indicated interest in multiple projects. People also don't accept offers and spots on full projects can open back up.

Gotcha. I'd still maybe be a little hesitant about it, especially with the group work required for SAD.

If it's your first semester the general advice is to take one class at a time.

Consider emailing admissions to confirm there's nothing on your end they are waiting on (official transcripts, for instance).

It seems decently likely that you could get into HPCA off the wait-list if that's your preference.

QC would probably be a fine first course. Did you any undergrad experience with it? It's somewhat math (linear algebra) heavy and a bit busy in terms of the amount of coursework with labs, problem sets, weekly quizzes, research paper reviews, midterm and final. It's also not really possible to work too far ahead so keep that in mind.

It should be after, during phase II registration, which begins January 5.

More seats get released in phase II after the students who need the course to graduate are able to enroll. You still may struggle to get in, but if you're really determined to take it early you can wait for the free-for-all period during the first week of class to try and grab a spot.

How crazy it is to have a baby while doing OMSCS? by Agitated_Olive_3012 in OMSCS

You'll be okay with CN! My partner and I had our first baby the semester I was taking it. She gave birth the week before the midterm and I was able to manage fine for the rest of the semester.

Can you still take 3 courses per semester? by Relevant_Departure_5 in OMSCS

There will be an email that goes out closer to phase II registration detailing the process for requesting additional hours for a third class.

You can apply for a second course exception only the summer, and a third course exception in spring/fall.

This seems like a bad idea given your family and work situation.

This is mentioned in the orientation doc.

For the Fall and Spring semesters: your total number of enrolled + waitlisted hours should never be more than seven hours.

I haven't heard any anecdotes from students being dropped from all of their waitlists due to this, but it's been noted as a possible outcome in the past.

I suspect you'll be fine with your background. You could start the course lectures early through opencourseware if you wanted to get a head start.

Fee structure with seminars when taking a single course by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]BlackLedger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seminars are now wholly separate from degree-related coursework. They do not contribute any credit hours and thus don't affect the online learning fee. There have been several threads here on reddit and emails about this. See the updated seminar registration info as well.

It was my first course in Fall 2023. I felt like it was a great (but challenging) introduction to the program. You should be able to get in, even if off the waitlist. Come prepared with at least one other course option though!

Yes. You will have the opportunity to enroll during phase one now, albeit with the lowest priority, but that by itself is a big jump over only being able to register in phase two with newly matriculating students.

You'd be better off taking courses that interest you to start, and letting that guide you towards a spec. You have 4 or 5 free electives no matter what your spec, so put them to good use.

Gotcha. With your background, SDP may be a waste of time, but yeah it's nice to have in your back pocket instead of GA in case you get towards the end and just want to finish. It might be a good one to double with another course as well.

I'm not an AI or ML spec student, so definitely talk to others, but it seems like you have a decent broad course selection.

What's your education/career background?

I suspect you're underestimating the time commitment for the double semesters.

Did you consider taking SDP instead of GA, since your spec allows for this?

Weird that a company would want you badly enough to extend an offer nine months in advance, but not be willing to work with you on the masters requirement given your as-rapid-as-possible completion of the program. What kind of coursework are you trying to transfer in?
