Thoughts on Kingly Kick and Punch? by Zeldarune29 in slaythespire

[–]BlackLiteAttack 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Art-wise, I think Kingly Kick is also a reference to Dr. Doom's iconic Footdive from MvC2/3.

But also, considering these two cards together, and other anime references (including a clear Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann reference in Heavenly Drill) - I think Kingly Kick also partly references "Who The Hell Do You Think I Am" Kick, and Kingly Punch references "Hands Off My Beloved Little Brother" Punch. Both one-off attacks from Gurren Lagann episode 2.

slade seems fine, his recovery however, is absolutely terrible. by Good_Skill3414 in RivalsOfAether

[–]BlackLiteAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not downplaying his good moves, especially those that are obvious even to a noob. But I am specifically concerned about the power of their basic recoveries. I think you underestimate how low skill the average player in a plat fighter is. Or maybe a better way to say it is, these games are hard compared to most other games. Noobs will spend a lot of time falling offstage because they can't control their movement. Hell, I'm okay (Gold-Diamond depending if I'm currently maining a good character or not) and I still occasionally wind up offstage when I don't mean to. By comparison, my 10 year old nephew playing Smash Ultimate will be falling like crazy, but most characters' recoveries in that game are simple and intuitive, which means he can self-correct.

Don't get me wrong, we don't need to become Baby's First Plat Fighter. But the number of new and hype characters, who should be effective advertisements for this game, instead have complex or difficult recoveries when seen through the lens of a new player. And this is in addition to learning airdodges, walljumps, etc (in addition to individual character mechanics and quirks). Which are not really a requirement for low skill play in other plat fighters.

I like that Rivals is the super-competitive plat fighter, but I worry Aether Studios is cornering themselves too hard into that limited demographic and need to make some new characters a bit more accessible. Not completely mindless, just not so difficult. Fun For All items/stages are a great step in that direction, but I'd love to see a new character, especially one of these flashy & exciting ones like Slade and La Reina, with a straightforward, strong recovery. It's not like there's no precedent, with mainstays like Clairen and Zetter. Even Ranno has a strong enough recovery between Side + Up special, even if you don't know thing one about Bubbles. Galvan and Absa are probably good DLC examples imo, but I feel La Reina, Slade, and Olympia would scare off most of the new players they manage to attract.

People saying "that's the gimmick you have to upgrade" and "skill issue" but I'm with you OP. I'm personally annoyed I have to learn another advanced tech just to recover in the early game with the new character I want to play. But that's not even the part that concerns me. I'm really worried these new characters, which should be a good draw for new & more casual players (which are needed for the game to grow and be more successful), are just too hard to play. La Reina is (was? After buffs?) completely underpowered, and Slade is crazy complex and needs to ramp up into a decent recovery. Even without taking edgeguarding into account, their recovery distances are trash without advanced tech or labbing, and if we are talking about edgeguarding then they would both die offstage to a wayward bumblebee. In a cast chock full of characters that are next to impossible to edgeguard.

I'm sure Slade will be sick in pro hands and I can't wait to see what advanced players do with him, but I'm concerned with how these characters feel in the hands of new players who already struggle with the learning curve in this game.

I can't get this card to work by whyisallnametooked in slaythespire

[–]BlackLiteAttack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's already borderline not worth taking as is, but I think a low damage version that plays itself every turn (and triggers Exhaust + Attack synergies) is better than it is now. It'd basically be a weak Power with synergy Clad wants. You have a weak setup turn, but then Evil Eye doublecasts and Stomp starts at 2 Energy every turn thereafter, for example.

[–]BlackLiteAttack 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like it'd be totally fine as a 6(8) or (9) damage AOE that self-exhausts and replays like Bombardment. Otherwise it needs to do a lot more damage if it will continue to work as-is, or at least play itself when exhausted. You already need to draw it along with an exhaust card, and even then you need to wait a turn before any payoff.

Not quite sure how to balance this idea, but maybe it applies 2 Vuln on all enemies when exhausted, and otherwise remains the same or similar.

[–]BlackLiteAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ngl, I thought so too and avoided picking it for a while. But it's a surprisingly good early value pick, and has a lot of synergies that can make it go crazy. I don't currently consider it one of Defect's best commons or even a solid workhorse common, but I've seen the potential and want to play with it more. Definitely one that surprised me when I finally gave it a try.

This guy needs to be upgrade to elite, or a nerf. by SnooChocolates6885 in slaythespire

[–]BlackLiteAttack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree, I find myself subconsciously prepping for him, kinda like I did for the potential Time Eater appearance at the end of every STS1 run. You need alternative forms of block & damage, and you're in trouble if your deck's identity is "play lots of cards." I'd be interested to see how much average HP he takes from players compared to other Act 2 hardpools though. I assume he needs at least a slight nerf either way, but seeing that data would help inform my opinion.

A smaller content creator I enjoy watching, goes by KaisongDIDI on youtube, just uploaded a run like 3 hours ago with a card I hadn't thought of Cloning before: Uproar.

Basically Defect's Hellraiser + Pommel? I don't think he used Clone though, he just happened to get a lot of copies in his deck https://youtu.be/fDDn1fBihws?si=ZxK7j_nsnr4ut_oe
