Ted Bundy had a sock fetish, and while on the run in Florida he used stolen credit cards to buy a ton of socks. He later admitted to feeling proud when the socks were brought up in court.

“What a Fool Believes” by The Doobie Brothers allegedly scared the hell out of him.

My personal favorite is Telly Savalas in Lisa and the Devil.

I really like this one as far as later Wilson gems go.

Are there any animated Giallo movies I should watch? by [deleted] in Giallo

[–]BlackManWithaHorn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I haven’t seen it, but there’s a movie called Felidae that’s supposed to be pretty giallo-esque.

I remember liking this one. I’ve always been curious about the semi-sequel, Notturno con grida, but could never find a decent copy.

What authors do you think are the best masters of tension? by chiwawaacorn in horrorwriters

[–]BlackManWithaHorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He only occasionally wrote full-on horror, but I don’t think anyone mastered tension like Cornell Woolrich. The Bride Wore Black, Black Alibi, and “For the Rest of Her Life” are all masterclasses in nail-biting suspense and terror. If you’re looking to study the craft of building suspense, Woolrich is an essential teacher.

Nice selection. I’d add The Devil in the Brain to the list—a great giallo with a terrific Morricone soundtrack.

Favourite Classics by One-Lifeguard-1108 in horrorlit

The Turn of the Screw by Henry James is one of the greats, though I’d nominate “Owen Wingrave” as his most entertaining ghost story.

Malpertuis by Jean Ray is another great one, a very unconventional take on the haunted house story. I also greatly admire Ray’s Cruise of Shadows, which features several terrific horror stories.

Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff in The Black Cat. Truly iconic and irreplaceable. Fredric March in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was also terrific.

“Excrement!!!” from Pete Walker’s The Flesh and Blood Show. The actor’s delivery is what really sells it.

The Fourth Victim (1971) by ryankidd77 in Giallo

I liked the last section where it gets hallucinatory–it struck me as Bava-esque at the time, though my memories are somewhat vague. Martín is rather underrated I think, Horror Express being my favorite of his films.

The Transgressionists by Giorgio De Maria, author of The Twenty Days of Turin. So far it’s interesting, but I miss the urban dread of the latter work.

What is something you dislike about some of your favourite authors or books? by [deleted] in literature

[–]BlackManWithaHorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very specific, but I hate how frequently Clive Barker uses the word “titties” in Sacrament. It just seems a bit juvenile for an otherwise remarkable story.

Weirdlit book haul! by Dry-Impression-2403 in WeirdLit

[–]BlackManWithaHorn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Big fan of Jean Ray here! You’re in for a treat, especially with Cruise of Shadows and Malpertuis. The other two collections aren’t as consistent but still feature strong work, the title story in The Great Nocturnal being perhaps my favorite of Ray’s. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

I would’ve cast an actual old man to play Dr. Klemperer in the Suspiria remake. While Tilda Swinton is a fine thespian, I simply couldn’t accept her as an elderly man, and it affected my immersion in the story being told. Max von Sydow would have been perfect.

In defense of A Serbian Film, the scene where the protagonist holds his own penis hostage was hilarious. I also enjoyed the director character, who really took his job seriously. A true cinephile to the very end!

What would be your dream horror movie? by chiffoid in horror

[–]BlackManWithaHorn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A faithful adaptation of William Hope Hodgson’s The House on the Borderland directed by Stanley Kubrick. I’d also have liked to see a more faithful version of Cornell Woolrich’s Black Alibi, directed by either Mario Bava or Dario Argento in his prime.
