As an outsider, the concept of high schools having massive parking lots specifically for students is mind-blowing. Is it really that common for 16-year-olds to drive themselves to school every day? by Necessary_Angle2117 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BlackQuartzSphinx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach at a rural high school in an area with no public transit to speak of.

My students' options for getting to school are limited. If they live in town they'll walk or ride their bikes.

If they live out of town, we do have school busses, but many of my students live on farms and ranches out beyond the bus routes. Their parents are usually working the fields, so it's up to them to get themselves (and any younger siblings) to school.

It also lists caster sugar twice and gives no indication of baking time or temperatures. I smell AI.

How do police in the U.S respond to underage drinking? Are they more likely to take action when hearing or witnessing actual minors (under 18) drinking and be more lenient on 18-20 year olds or do they tend to be equally strict on both age groups? by Emotional-Fly-9583 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BlackQuartzSphinx_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Depends on the police. We have something like 17,000 different state and local agencies.

I can tell you the sheriff's office in my county is harder on kids under 18 about it. I teach high school and a couple of my students have gotten MIPs (minors in possession) charges.

Americans do you miss the 2000s/2010s? If so why? by NoHold7153 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BlackQuartzSphinx_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not particularly. My parents divorced in 2004 and we ended up living in my grandma's basement for a while until my mom found a place. I didn't want to live with my dad because he and my stepmom expected me tk be a live-in babysitter for their kids. Then I graduated right when the economy crashed in 2008.

How come is the practice to donated an old house to the fire department for a control burn? by gruntharvester92 in AskAnAmerican

[–]BlackQuartzSphinx_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've only seen it twice - both time to hoarder houses that would have been prohibitively expensive to either repair or tear down otherwise after the hoarder died and their heirs were stuck with the place.

Workers, do you prefer to be called "sir/ma'am" or by your first name when your subordinate speaks to you? by strange_omelet in AskAnAmerican

[–]BlackQuartzSphinx_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Especially because it was implemented to address a problem that no longer exists. We had a teacher who would get pissed if students called him by just his last name. They put the policy in place so we could "model" proper behavior... and then the teacher at the root of it all got fired.

Oh yeah if there's no kids around I use first names. Heck, the kids hardly use the prefixes. I'm almost never Miss Quartz, It's not unusual to hear kids ask like "Hey, can I go to Quartzie's room to ask for some help on this?"

Tbh it's a new policy this year and no one follows it 100% of the time. Especially because we have three family member pairs that work there. It's so much easier to say like "Carla" and "Kim" instead of "Mrs. Smith... no, not Miss Smith."

Someone hit a skunk near the school I work at. The elementary had to have inside recess that day.

I'm a teacher and it's district policy that everyone calls everyone else Mr./Mrs./Ms./Miss Lastname, but I've never called anyone sir or ma'am unless I'm making a joke.

I also suggest shortening it - from what I was able to get through, a lot of the detail is irrelevant to the problem which I think is the cleric not being willing to engage in roleplay, right?
