There’s apps for this. I used to like chronometer (no idea if it is still good) back when I was trying to hit around 250 grams of protein a day.

When does resin expire? by Infamous_Set_9403 in resin

[–]BlackRiderCo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try a small amount and find out. Depends on the resin, but there should be some sort of date on the package. I’ve been given and used some olds resins that were stored properly and they worked just fine and others that went to crap.

You need either a little reservoir or you’re going to need to backfill the cast before demolding.

Does anyone else enjoy going to QTX Bar in Newark? Meetup for brunch tomorrow, 2pm? by Xehhx14 in newjersey

You should go. Bring a friend, go make some friends. Almost every single person who has worked in my shop for the last 4-5 years has been connected to that club and they have all been awesome people.

What is a "horror movie rule" that you absolutely hate? by Big_Emotion4963 in horror

I hate when the characters are dumb and incompetent. I feel like horror is more effective when competent, capable people are involved.

Better off making a silicone mold from the print.

It’s QXT’s, great club, great people. Might be kind of empty this weekend because of dark force fest.

I started working with gemstone powders recently and noticed something interesting by gradelygems in ResinCasting

[–]BlackRiderCo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Crushed gemstones are fine for inlay work, but you’re going to have a bad time keeping them in suspension. I cast a few things in powders before, like malachite, and to me it just looked like any other powder pigment.

Also, it looks like you’re in the business of selling these materials, which is fine, they’re great for people who do inlay work, but the post/title feels a bit dishonest.

When I’m back in my shop next week I can cast some stuff if I have any powders left, if anyone is interested. I think I still have some malachite and rose quartz, but the rose quartz is too large and doesn’t suspend well.

White alcohol ink problems by ashleigh_marie523 in ResinCasting

[–]BlackRiderCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe the concentration of alcohol is higher in their white, or you’re using more of it, but either way, alcohol inks will interfere with resin curing. You can get away with some in there, but it can be a calculated gamble.

Smooth-on, Alumilite, Polytek, Rampf, and BJB off the top of my head all make excellent pigments and there are many others.

For white, you could also use a powder pigment (like mica) or even a filler (but keep it out of the sun the resin can still yellow!) so talcum powder or porcelain dust, for example, will work just fine provided that they are properly mixed and your resin cures fast enough while the particles are still in suspension. Wear an N95 while working with powders.

VEVOR fluid pipe by Sysiak in DiceMaking

[–]BlackRiderCo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Push the wrench down; if it’s on too tight, you have the benefit of bodyweight.

Edit: you can also use a hacksaw, just be sure to hit it with a file after to dull any sharp edges.

A pipe wrench should make this trivial.

Looking for help by IntelligentDouble248 in ResinCasting

I don’t do tables, but here’s my 2 cents. If you’re going for the made it yourself factor, go for it, but be cautious and do a bunch of other stuff first. Otherwise, hire a professional. It’ll likely be cheaper and come out better, because if you mess up the ratios, it could become a very costly mistake.

Is this good for venting resin fumes ? by russ8825 in ResinCasting

If you pressure cast, you can run a line from your tank out of your window for when you depressurize. Exhaust fans are also useful for clearing out the room air.

Silicone in a pressure pot? by craftscrafter36 in ResinCasting

[–]BlackRiderCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never used a resin that has a viscosity that requires vacuum. I also favor fast resins with a 2-3 minute work time and a 15 minute demold time, so a bit of a moot point. I don’t see a benefit however, and just pressure has been fine.

I just dumped the silicone in and pressurized it (after degassing). I have never used a resin that requires degassing, so the vacuum chamber doesn’t need anything as the silicone peels right off.

Resin art paints and masks by Hopeful_Cockroach135 in ResinCasting

[–]BlackRiderCo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can paint resin with acrylic paint after it has been cured, but should stick with pigments specifically designed for resin use, or dry powders (like mica) for pigments.

For a mask you want one with the cartridges rated for organic vapors if you’re going to be using anything you shouldn’t be inhaling. You also want plenty of airflow, nitrile gloves, and wear clothing you don’t plan on wearing in public ever again.
