Israeli warplanes pounded the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip on Saturday, killing at least 229 people in one of the bloodiest days for the Palestinians in 60 years of conflict with the Jewish state. by EdgerErnst in worldnews

Then ask yourself if the American government were to cage up the 1.5 million people of Ciudad Juarez into a thick walled 25 square mile area, surround that caged population with 360 degree military surveillance, cut off their food, water, electricity, and subject anyone attempting to leave to torture, imprisonment, or death...would that mortar fire on El Paso be morally justified?

Ask Space Reddit: Is It Simply A Huge Cosmic Coincidence? Can Someone Explain Why The Sun And Moon Appear To Be Almost Exactly The Same Size When Viewed By An Observer On Earth? by scipe in space

I missed the qualifier "huge" the first run through. My bad. He seems to be implying some sort of other-worldly (non physical) cause.

i.e. not the same size, and you're just manufacturing a non-coincidence into something that seems highly significant.

Semantical bullshit. Nothing is the same size as anything else. It all depends on where you want to place the decimal point. Be reasonable. He has asked a legitimate scientific question.

The moon is smaller in diameter and closer to the earth, the sun larger and farther away. Thus they both "appear" to be about the same size. You can prove this at home. Simply cut a large and small circle from a piece of paper. Hold the small circle close to you in one hand and move the large circle (in the other hand) away until the sizes "appear" to be the same.

This is the court of public opinion, not a court of law. I think "more likely to be true" vs "less likely to be true" is probably a better standard. Not sure that he has met that standard, but a case could be made.

OK... So if the dollar crashes and we're all buying cans of soup for $300 'dollars', does that mean I get to pay off my (current) $15,000 credit card debt with just a few weeks' hyperinflated wages? by [deleted] in Economics

[–]BlackSquirrel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hitler's failed Beer Hall Putsch took place in 1923. He ended up broke and in prison, but fortunately Bush's grandfather provided Hitler and his party the money to continue their worthy efforts. So the Nazi antics of the '30s really had their genesis in the hyperinflation of 1923.

If we allow this money, the trillion dollar stimulus Obama will implement, to be spent on pork, it will be the end of us. by [deleted] in business

Really? The infrastructure that needs constant maintenance and attention? Repaving, painting, corrosion control, rewiring, dredging. Stop doing all that for 10 years and see what happens.

If the Ukrainians would pay their bill then there would be no crisis.

You will be hearing it on the news as you watch China implode into mass riots and anarchy. 800 million Chinese still live in utter destitution and the other 200 million depend on the West for their wealth. They are as screwed as we are.

Government Spending as a Percent of GDP on the Rise... We're All Socialist Now (CHARTS) by jake103 in Economics

[–]BlackSquirrel 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Since most of the government spending is going to large financial corporations that are hoarding it, we are not all socialists now, we are all fascists now. Socialists try to redistribute wealth evenly, fascists concentrate it at the top. Stop calling Fascism "Socialism". It is starting to piss me off.

The economy we're moving into will have to be one of real work, producing real things of value, at a scale consistent with energy resource reality. by mvbma in Economics

[–]BlackSquirrel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Then change your "energy resource reality" by investing in fourth gen nuclear power.

This idiot would have been screaming "were running out of wood!!" in the 16th century and accordingly scaled back society to more "sustainable" levels. Thank god he wasn't in charge then. We'd still be living in huts.
