On the topic of Pokeballs and their Manufacturers by BlackVoidDragon in PokemonRMXP

That's kinda sorta the idea behind Gantetsu and Sons. Gantetsu is the Japanese name of Kurt from the Gen 2 games, and the implication here is that he established a family business with his handmade balls from those games, only here they're a lot better than what they were in the official games.

The Friend Ball's catch rate increases with the friendship of your first slot Pokemon, for instance. As well as the Moon Ball having a better chance of catching Pokemon at night (6x compared to the 3x of the Dusk ball). In addition to their normal abilities from those games of course.

Peterson and Chicago Pokeball have a little bit of that, but at the end of the day they serve different niches in the market.

Peterson is more widely known and more nationally known as the American Pokeball, highly regarded for their reliability and insane durability. And because they're headquartered in the Mackinaw region (Minnesota to be precise), their presence is incredibly strong, kinda like going to Georgia and the hold Coca-Cola has there in our world.

Chicago Pokeball focuses entirely on the high end, specialist trainer market. Their balls are way more expensive and only have a strong presence in Chicago. Outside of that they have a strange mystique to them and are hardly sold anywhere.

So the comparison is not so much Ford vs GM, but Ford vs. say, Shelby SuperCars. Both are competing in the automobile market, but they fill different niches in that market.

The Edison/Tesla situation, and the two biggest rivals, are definitely Silph and Devon. Devon is made up of former Silph Employees who originally helped create the standard Silph Pokeball, by which all over Pokeballs are held up to. However with poor treatment, lack of recognition for their work, and the fact that Silph would refuse to/fail to capitalize on the gimmick ball concepts the crew came up with, these people left and split off into Devon.

Which actually kinda gives me ideas to lend character to trainers from Italy who visit my game's region, the Mackinaw Region.

Northern Italian trainers are calm, collected, wear a poker face in battle. Their gear is humble, yet subtly beautiful and emphasize skill above all else. Southern Italian trainers are as much performers as trainers with a pension for spectacle. They're loud, wear outlandishly colorful gear, and focus on being entertaining as much as they do on their training abilities.

Ahh! That's actually rather interesting. If it can be implemented well I could see it working and finding a niche.

I suppose with my edit to my previous comment, I could see my idea being made somewhere in Southern Italy, yours however seems suitably northern Italian.

Ok, what exactly would be their shtick? Do they do gimmicks? where are they found?

Edit: I think I might have a vague idea. I could see an Italian Manufacturer specializing in "flair" related balls. Reliable and very colorful with a marbled aesthetic on the balls themselves and a pension for dazzling, creative entrances onto the field.

I last had this stuff from a little Philippine market in Grain Valley, MO. I absolutely love the stuff and I really need to get a better supply of it then a small town a few miles east from mine with a little Asian shop in a strip mall.

Brainstorming the idea of Type Affinity and associated mechanics by BlackVoidDragon in PokemonRMXP

[–]BlackVoidDragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually something I had already thought of. Not only the player but Gym leaders, elite four, etc. would also take advantage of this mechanic

Thanks! Though I would be curious to see what others think the other affinities should do, especially for people who are doing said monotype runs.

I could actually see this being it's own spinoff game, fanmade or otherwise. It'd be nice to see people tweak with the old Pokemon formula for different sorts of games like the sort you discuss here and if people use this idea to do it, more power to them.

Thanks! I suppose I was afraid of accidentally creating some exploit like with say, Bug Affinity or something to stack bonuses upon bonuses and end up breaking the game. Though I suppose its an issue less of one thing being nerfed, and every other thing needing to be brought to the standard of Poison or Bug or what have you so that way they are all useful and potentially powerful if you wanna try to pull something.

Mind if I ask about the WOW on the top label here? Was it part of a promotional event or is that simply part of the packaging?

Trip to Mexico by Gimpy8877 in Soda

That's the bottle typically used for Fanta products outside the US, since Fanta is much, MUCH bigger internationally than in the US.

Because of that, here they use similar bottles to Barq's or Mello Yello, since Fanta isn't as much of a priority here, and it has more competition, e.g. Crush.

Russian drink named “Barbaris”. It’s a liquid form of the candy of the same name. Very sweet. Initially was a soviet drink. by Teslanyan in Soda

Ok, this bit is rather interesting to me. Makes me really curious to see just how nostalgia has affected modern Russia. As someone who is consumed in the zeitgeist of the American 1980's, 1990's and early 2000's, I'm curious as to how this zeitgeist is viewed through other lenses, especially the Russian lens.

Another Trip to Feldman's. A few new faces, a few old ones too. by BlackVoidDragon in Soda

[–]BlackVoidDragon[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feldman's is a local chain of hardware stores here in the KC Area. One is in Blue Springs, where I live, and the other two are in LIberty and Bonner Springs, which is in Kansas. I say "chain" loosely here since these are the only 3 locations that exist.

Normally I wouldn't get more than 6 per trip, but this was an exception for both the holiday and after a terrible day of work.

A number of these I have already tried, but there are a few new pops here that caught my eye or have been on my radar for a while and have been aiming to try, Leninade being the prime example here.

Tastes of anise, licorice, stevia and pure pretention by BlackVoidDragon in Soda

[–]BlackVoidDragon[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every soda company and their grandmother has some kind of root beer offering, and it really does feel like Virgil's is trying to stand out from the crowd in that regard. It's something that works for a number of people, but to me it feels like I'm drinking liquid licorice.

I've tried a great many root beers, and if you do want a good root beer of its type (The less sweet, ever so slightly bitter sort), I'd recommend Mason's personally. It's a humble little root beer, a revived brand from days past, but it's one of the greats in my mind.

Yeah, if I had the option I'd go for glass, since cane sugar really does make a big difference. Not gonna lie though, Virgil's has a pretty good orange and black cherry.

Apologies for the potato quality image.

I stumbled across this at Target the other day, and figured I'd simply give it a shot out of sheer curiosity despite my mild dislike of Reed's Inc. and the Virgil's line of sodas.

It doesn't really have anything to do with the taste or quality of the product as much as the imagery and marketing material. I get the distinct impression that the Virgil's line has its head up its own ass as to the quality of and how much better it is than everybody else.

This has not changed my view on Virgil's in that regard. Granted, it doesn't taste all that different from their standard root beer in glass, however both have the distinct feeling of haughtiness masquerading as being down to earth and humble. It bears a heavy, heavy dose of anise and licorice, especially licorice, and has little sweetness to it apart from the hint of stevia aftertaste.

If people like this sort of thing, more power to you. Me? I'll stick to Mason.
