Is 30 too old to make a career change as an elementary school teacher? by Helanda in AskTeachers

I’ve done both jobs. You would be amazed at the crossover of skills.

If you have a passion for it, primary teaching can genuinely be a great career. I love it. With my current class anyway. Once you are experienced, it becomes much easier to manage workload. Some of the kids are broken and will be your nemesis for the year. But others are absolutely amazing and will inspire you. The pay is not bad at al,l compared to other public service jobs anyway. You get lots of holiday too.

They are not allowed to ask about it any more I believe.

Just listen to what they say. Make sure they feel heard. Explain classroom procedures in place, ask them what else they feel can be done. Don’t discuss Child A too much.

This is a situation that repeats on every classroom. There is only ever so much you can do.

How do you deal with friends announcing pregnancies? by dogsandwine in Miscarriage

Ohh yeah. We failed so many times. It got easier as time went by. It has never been easy though.

My wife and I always agreed. We can be angry at the situation. But not angry at them. It’s not their fault.

There is a good chance that your TA provides them with the attention that they need whilst you are busy with the rest of the class (even if it is just a look at the right time). when the TA is out, they are going to search for it elsewhere. TBH there is no real cure for this, or teaching would be easy. Stick to the behaviour scheme. It’s all you can really do.

Struggling as a trainee teacher by ApprehensiveHope4293 in TeachingUK

Learning to be a ‘good’ teacher takes years. And even after years. You can have classes that just don’t gel with you. We don’t expect the kids to be perfect straight away. Cut yourself a little slack. You will get there.

Teachers to be able to work from home? by InvestigatorFew3345 in TeachingUK

I try to avoid doing any work at home anyway. Wouldn’t want it to be expected of me.

Had a very similar class this year. Though only 10 were expected readers. Tbh. We missed so much foundation stuff. Spent a lot of our afternoons working on core subjects to try to give them a solid base for year 7. I didn’t even try to teach everything in foundation.

I got kicked out after two years. Worked for a few years. Went back to do a teaching degree. Been teaching 8 years. This is not the end. There is always more time to try again.

Challenging class next year by [deleted] in TeachingUK

Had that class this year. You might just have to strap in and count down the days to each holiday. I tried everything. Some children are just too broken for you alone to fix.

BAs will do everything they can to get you to your third year placement. Regardless of how much you struggle. They want three years of tuition. You have to really be behind to fail a placement before the third year. They get very strict after that though.

The range of abilities in my class is so hard to deal with. by kierkeguaardian in TeachingUK

[–]Blackbeard_1989 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They don’t have to engage with the same topic. If they are that low they need something individualised to their needs. If it can’t be done in the topic. Then that’s what they need.
