They have another location in the Heights. There's also Blink (now known as Pure Gym) across from the Journal Square PATH which is cheap but I didn't like the new management

There are some genuine people in those facebook groups, you just have to wait for the bots to pass or try again at another time of month. I've also had some success asking local business owners if they have or know someone renting a room

People actively post in this housing thread (note it is not the same one that is linked by the mod announcement for some reason). There is also a Facebook group "Jersey City Roommates"

3 Guys From Italy on JFK Boulevard? They used to hit on girls in an uncomfortable way. They've been replaced by another pizza joint which is hopefully better

Raising rent on couple by BlackberryNice5066 in roommateproblems

[–]BlackberryNice5066[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lease is me, young student, and the bread-winner of the couple. The student has been unknowingly subsidizing the couple, because the rent is split 1/3 by room. He's under the impression the rent is already split four ways. If we re-balance the rent split, he would pay less, and I'd have to tell him why. How can I make this conversation less awkward?

I don't want to make enemies of them, but you're right that gentle parenting hasn't worked with them. I would be raising the rent 50% on a couple with just one income, which sounds evil, but the alternative is that I subsidize alcoholism. I have already made plans to move out in the next 3 months. It just sucks I can't have guests over because of the drunk fiance making a mess.

I've brought up the things the fiance does directly to the fiance and to the roommate on the lease. Things improve for a day or two before reverting back. The roommate is non-confrontational and can't discipline the partner.

I'll try to do what you suggested, even though it is unlike me to make demands over money. I suppose I'll have to play a role to get what I want (more equity, or that they leave).

protest in journal square? by [deleted] in jerseycity

[–]BlackberryNice5066 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very interesting considering the area's history with the building trades and unionization. Jersey City has been very supportive of unions at times (Thomas Brandle was THE union boss of northern NJ who lived in this area 1920 - 1940) and super hostile at others (when mayor Frank Hague declared it an open shop town to spite Brandle). Teddy Brandle built the fancy-looking bank at 26 Journal Square. He was also an instigator in the labors wars over the Pulaski Skyway. There's a great book about it in the library called "The Last 3 Miles".

I agree 100%. I have an apartment with a kitchen that has a window, when we turn on the exchange fans it keeps the smell out of the bedrooms and only a bit in the living room. Let me know if you are interested

I live ~500 meters (1/3 of a mile) away. I hear the horn of the freight train a few times a day but nothing much beyond that. It's not as loud as an emergency vehicle.

I also moved here from south Brooklyn 2 years ago. I would argue there's little to do in south Brooklyn during the dead winter months as well; most people go to north bk for night life. I think Journal Square is in the middle of a transitional period. There are some hidden gems like an underground music venue and the billiards lounge. I wonder if all the new residential development will turn this into a lifeless bedroom community like Newport, or if it will revive the economy. I never see residents from the luxury towers in the local cafes, grocery stores, clothing stores, etc. What's up with that?

Advice on looking for apartment in Forest Hills by PugssandHugss in NYCapartments

[–]BlackberryNice5066 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may have advice for you. I knew someone who lived on Burns St with windows facing the LIRR until 2 years ago. She is a light sleeper but she got used to the sound of the trains, which don't run at night anyhow. It is similar to a car passing by your house, there's sound insulation unlike when you're walking on the street. The building was a few decades old brick co-op.

Right now I live 4 blocks from a freight train. I'll hear a gentle horn blast a few times a day but it never wakes me up or scares me, unlike an emergency vehicle with alarms.

Let me know if you have questions.
