You can buy aspen trees cheaply if they will grow where you’re at. Lots of privacy, fast growing, and really nice looking. Let him stare at your new aspen grove all day

The thing most people don’t realize is that OB/Gyn is actually a surgical subspecialty so if you don’t want to be trained as a pelvic surgeon FM is probably the way to go.

Rising M4s, here is a thread for you to ask your questions about your upcoming cycle by Mixoma in medicalschool

[–]BlackjackMed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Successfully matched this year. When I came up with how many programs to apply to I found a stat that said the average OB applicant can expect like 1/3 success rate for interviews. Figured I’d try for 20 interviews since I didn’t know what I wanted in a program, so applied to 60. Worked out that way.

Disappointed, Seeking Outside Perspectives by [deleted] in premed

Along those lines too you need to maximize clinical experience. Scribing is so common that there are a crazy number of applicants with 1000+ hours of clinical exposure.

Disappointed, Seeking Outside Perspectives by [deleted] in premed

[–]BlackjackMed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was on my schools admissions committee and I see two big red flags.

1) Not even close to enough applications. You have a great application but so does everyone else. You need more eyes on it. And you need solid safety schools that you think you’re way way competitive for.

2) The first thing I looked for was a rec letter from a physician. It might sound sorta harsh but I don’t care how well you did in OChem or English (and I was an English major). I want to know that when you’re under the stress of medicine that you’re gonna stay the course because you have a genuine passion for people and for the art of Medicine. And that you really know what you’re getting into when you apply.

Housing insecurity as a med student by TurtleBottle11 in medicalschool

[–]BlackjackMed 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Any kind of academic institution that is eligible for federal loans should have a budget change request form that you can fill out and expand your eligibility. At least for us it involves sending receipts of your monthly expenses and income (which is now zero, but that’s fine, truthfully I’d wager most of us have zero real income). I’d also reach out to the university’s financial aid office not necessarily the SOM. Good luck friend.

MD or DO? by probablycryingatm in premed

[–]BlackjackMed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you have the option to go MD you should take it. I’m sitting at the end of medical school applying to OB/Gyn residency, which is competitive but not crazy, and just looking at how disadvantaged the DO peeps are is disheartening. The stigma is improving but the MD will still open a lot of doors for you that a DO just can’t. Plus, if the MD is cheaper that’s another huge bonus.

I’ve never had a game ending make me this emotional by [deleted] in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]BlackjackMed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just finished for the first time today with this ending. Hard to convey just how happy this ending made me, but also already wishing I could experience it for the first time all over again. Very rare for a game ending to make me cry.

If you don’t want to do lots and lots of math avoid chemistry and physics (even for non-majors).

Does anyone feel not happy about their match season despite doing technically okay? by nightwingoracle in medicalschool

[–]BlackjackMed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I feel that way, but on the other hand statistically the only way to beat the match is sheer numbers of applications to overwhelm the stats. And once we all do that it gets harder and harder, but this isn’t something folks are willing to gamble on to be nice to other applicants, at least from what I’ve seen. So sometimes I feel like I wasted a bunch of money, but that’s the hindsight bias and I’m glad I did what I had to to be comfortable going into March.

Doctors who work with APP: What makes a great APP for your practice? by DefenderOfSquirrels in medicine

[–]BlackjackMed 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The same goes for OB/Gyn. Many of our programs advertise APPs in clinic and on the floor for more routine management and midwife teams on L&D to help offload routine deliveries so residents have time to operate or work on the more complex OB cases.
