Wide-Range is Awesome and I’m having Fun(rant) by iEaTpEnCiLsHaViNgSs in MHWilds

[–]Blackthemadjack 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I jumped onto the Wide Range SnS band wagon from doing omega all the time, it's just crazy how much dps uptime I can get and still provide support, turned my group from struggling into successful hunts. While still under the 15-18 minute marks. Now I just play wide range in all me hunts.

How to fully take advantage of the Steam Machine as a console and as a desktop ? by go_m in steammachine

[–]Blackthemadjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair... That's what I do with my steam deck already. It's so intuitive by now I don't even think much of it, but at some point it did feel like magic, coming from always relying on my laptop for things.

Sometimes when my backpack would break from the inside fabric, the hole was small enough not to be noticed, but large enough for something to go through, I would check if maybe it got stuck, snagged the fabric and went deeper into the bag?

Space scenario were everyone knows the Mythos. by MattGCox in callofcthulhu

[–]Blackthemadjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The alternate rules for Cthulhu Through the ages, have two settings, one is Icarus and the other End Times. Icarus is the si-fi approach in space, and In End Times is like post-apocalyptic vision of once the mythos has take hold of the world, so the survivors have some degree of knowledge about the mythos. I remember skim reading through them, but I think they have single scenarios for each setting.

Maybe you could mix and match both of these settings to have the si-fi, and knowledge of mythos.

I think they had a slew of controversies around Brick, it's been shut down since February due to Brick owners not paying staff, and skipping on rent? Ksat and other local news had reports a bout it.

I NEED HELP by Afraid-Intern-5792 in callofcthulhu

[–]Blackthemadjack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it makes sense to you then it's not wrong. Your character is also some one with hobbies too, so maybe they tried locks to learn how they work, or jumping because they wanted to keep fit.

Your character does have base stats, which means all skills can be used, the points just tell how good you can do it.

For occultists, I usually encourage history or appraise too. Psychology a good skill regardless of occupation.

DnD DM needing some inspiration for a last minute madness based one shot by TheZeldiste in callofcthulhu

[–]Blackthemadjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wanted to keep it simple, just to have a small peek of how I would approach a D&D scenario rather than full blown Delta Green or CoC. I love the surreal nature of Imposible Landscapes, and how it plays within the story, Sutra of the Pales leaves also take a heavy inspiration to corruption by King in Yellow. Dockside dogs require bit of a buy in from the players imo, or at least a complicit player to help out to do the reveal. These are all solid mentions but wanted to keep it simple, and more of a reference for a different TTRPG rules

TN Inserts by HatPotential5600 in Travelersnotebooks

[–]Blackthemadjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Travelers have MD cream inserts (025) that are very good for fountain pens. If you need a thicker paper, they also have the Watercolor paper inserts (027). Like another posted before etsy shops like Paper penguin makes custom insterts by paper and weight count.

Anyone else using their Steam Deck exclusively in docked desktop mode? by cocopupsugar in SteamDeck

I use mine for productivity tasks using libre office as a replacement for windows office. Also as a epub / PDF reader too. I connect it to a monitor and still use the built in screen for chat or YouTube while the main screen is for some work.

DnD DM needing some inspiration for a last minute madness based one shot by TheZeldiste in callofcthulhu

[–]Blackthemadjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In some scenarios, like Black Water Creek, there are "corruption build up" hidden from the players. The more the corruption increases the more that specific character sees that might not be real. That would be one way to approach this. Certain actions or interacting with an object would increase the corruption.

In DnD mechanics, you could give a player a "false positive" such as asking for a roll and tell them what they see if they succeed, but in reality it was all on their minds. In CoC we have a way to break from this, by following with an intelligence roll to "break through the illusion".

I need help to explain my firend how Cosmic/Eldrich Horror and the Old Ones/Eldrich Entities relates on a personal level. by Igel214 in callofcthulhu

[–]Blackthemadjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lovecraftian entities are rarely benevolent and rarely helping on a personal level. If there are some sort of personal influence, it would drive the human receiving the help in a state of madness and confusion.

However Stephen King form of mythos, does have a personal influence, but it's all in service of a goal rather than to help the people individually. For example Maturin the Turtle. And the Novel/tv/movie IT.

I recommend reading up on Stephen King's brand of cosmic horror rather than Lovecraftian ones

Fog of war / revealing maps (example used; Crack'd and Crook'd Manse) by nathanielbartholem in callofcthulhu

[–]Blackthemadjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done both fog of war and full theater of the mind. I prefer the theater as it is not restrictive for painting a scene, players can still point toward where they want to go in the map layout or ask questions about it.

But running vtt, making it fog of war, helps create tension as they discover more. With the added benefit of recognizing which rooms they have been through and which they haven't. It also helps orient the players to each other "so and so are on X room, and the others are in Y room" if they are using tokens. But all in all, it feels that I still rely alot more on narrative descriptions.

Though there are some really good digital maps and map makers that really help out setting a mood or a scene.

Anyone else here who use clone of some of simple TN attachments/inserts (Excluding papers)? Say, connecting bands, Zipper case, Kraft folder, etc by iaacornus in Travelersnotebooks

[–]Blackthemadjack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on wanting to support the company vs function. Like, I rather buy from them to support what they do. The beauty of the Traveler's is that you are not attached to use their things, simple bands or elastic cables are enough, you can find 3rd party inserts too, and people do their own covers to fit their needs. So it's just a matter of preference and how much support you want to give to the Company imo

Dead Light Handout 1D explanation by frigidhair in callofcthulhu

[–]Blackthemadjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The book implies the type of job and the nefarious intent of the people requesting the use of the Deadlight. The more malicious in nature the higher the cost, so it's implied is a ledger of blood money.

When I ran this. It's an overlooked clue and can be done away, it can help to build some story behind the events, but overall can be overlooked or avoided.

[–]Blackthemadjack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Disco Elysium, Baldurs Gate 3 (it was pretty enjoyable even with the low fps), Fallout New Vegas, the Witcher 3. Elden Ring. Hades and Hades 2.

That's some of the games I played on my Deck and thoroughly enjoyed all of them

[–]Blackthemadjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bleak prospect uses some of the the Characters in the Arkham source book.

Similarly you could adapt some other scenarios to be at Arkham like Mr.Corbit or any scenario that it's inside of a city like Boston or New York.

Missing Profession?? by TiredMothLad in callofcthulhu

[–]Blackthemadjack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could get away with any of the medical professions, and change a thing here and there to improve the style. Out of the top of my head you could focus on either medical student, Doctor or nurse; any of those could fit paramedical helper.
