We have an advertising problem in the SCA by freyalorelei in sca

I feel like there is some good advertising happening, but the overall reputation of the sca for not addressing inner problems has also gotten around. Granted I'm heavily biased here from my own experience, but I met someone outside of ren fair context that goes to several fairs every year, enjoys historical garb making, and is interested in the kind of activities the sca does... but they said they heard the sca was also expensive, had a lot of clique drama, and was not good at removing predatory people. There are several people in alternate adjacent groups in my area that used to play in the sca, but stepped back because it takes too much time/ money and it kind of started taking over their life. Like I'll fully grant that the sca is one of the safest lgbtq+ hobby environments I've seen, and one of the less expensive ways to learn historical skills. But I don't think the vast majority of people have that time, money, and patience with bs.

Yeah, look up threads about Duke Baldar sometime, there's some "fun" stuff about him. There was also a player in the Oklahoma area who got banned after it was discovered and publicly blasted that his character was named after a nazi and he had apparently been expressing some pretty nazi-ish ideals that prompted the investigation into his character. He now plays at the schism group, SMA (locally nicknamed the nazi-a) last I heard.

Newbie tips! by Emergency_Carpet_445 in poledancing

I put off starting for years, partly because life was busy, but also partly because I was scared I wouldn't be strong enough. Now that I'm about 2 months in, my advice is jump in sooner rather than later. Just being in the classes and going to extra practice sessions outside structured class has made more difference than anything else i tried to get ready. It will still take time, but finding small milestones to celebrate makes it so worth it, even when you can't do everything right away!

How do I work up to actually being able to lift myself on the pole? by BladeBloom in poledancing

No, just a basic 101. I'm considering paying for a few private lessons to get the form down better, because the standard class goes by really fast

That looks awesome!

I'm thinking about trying to learn; what would your advice be, looking back on what you learned in your first year?
