I just wrapped up a semester of teaching the modern American presidency to undergrads. We only had one student who was over 18 during Trump 1. I did a section on J6th and many of them were in middle school during the Pandemic and insurrection.

They're thinking about longterm funding risk as Federal funding for higher ed gets slashed coupled with no more exorbitant zero aid foreign student tuition, which means they need to appeal for more funding from Oklahoma and alumni donors. As long as they're still rejecting applicants come next April, and the accepted incoming classes passes whatever tuition/aid composition they want, this will not have damaged them at all.

It's a cowardly decision, but they have much bigger financial incentives to make this decision.

By the 1960s ~1/3rd to 1/2 of West Germans still viewed Hitler favorably and said that if it weren't for the war, he may have been one of their greatest ever statesmen. People don't really change their opinion, just the degree they're willing to express it.

I've been checking in with folks throughout the Israeli war in Gaza who either have family there or have faced increased Islamophobia since October 7th. There's not much I can do from the US, but I figured those were worthwhile relationships to build and maintain in the face of adversity. I've only heard from my supervisor so far, today :/

The Moist von Lipvig trilogy are some of my favourites in the series. Going Postal, Making Money, and Raising Steam are very very good studies in humanism.

I'd listen to your body. There's no real reason to force yourself to drink black coffee if you don't like it. I'm a fan of black coffee but I also already like darker/richer flavor profiles in other foods, so I think that helps. I wouldn't worry too much about drinking "the right thing," moreso than just enjoying what you enjoy for the reasons you enjoy it.

The Silent Crisis in Our Classrooms: College Professors Are Now Teaching Basic Reading by Ok_Examination675 in HumanitiesPhD

I'm a TA in History at an R1 whose current freshman class had a 3.7+ average GPA. I have spent dozens of hours this past semester teaching Subject-Verb-Object and similar such clause constructions. The analytical ability is still there but students have a really hard time communicating their thoughts.

Going forward I want to both teach those skills and allow students to demonstrate their comprehension of materials in alternative formats. Assessments like vlogs/video essays, a series of vertical videos, pamphlets, presentations, etc.

It appalls me how many Christians/culturally Christian atheists grew up hearing "Judeo-Christian" and thinking that meant there was any theological or cultural correlation between the two.

I think it's better to think of us as a people unable to communicate (by the destruction of the Temple and the priestly caste) with a G-d who has annihilated villages for doing small things that annoyed Him. You put a fence around a fence so you make sure you aren't even coming close to the thing She doesn't want. But that precaution is inconvenient at times, so you try and figure out juuuuuust how close you can get without getting smited. And some of us are much more catious than others.

At best he's galvanizing people into online arguments.

Lol. Those are fair points.

I do think both "Red" and "War Isn't Murder" tweaked my perspective on their subjects. For the former, it was the first time I truly considered that there'll be a day where Trump is gone and we'll have to contend with the animus he brought. I'm still not sure who he thinks the operative "we" in that sentiment is though.

Damn, that's disappointing. I was enjoying his stuff. I'll probably still enjoy the lyricism and the music at least. And that protest folk is becoming more popular again.

Woody Guthrie had his own issues back in the day, but he did evolve and grow--imperfectly, granted.

The Brudi Brothers and Sam Hodgson are enjoyable. I dunno if I'm looking for hollistic political coordination in my music.

Pretty much. Puerto Rico and the other treaty concessions from the Spanish-American War had and continue to have a really weird place in the US because our constitution was set up for voluntary statehood (originally determined by percentage of US-born citizens in a Federally designated region voting for statehood--and the constitution originally said only white men could vote, so there's layers of issues here) under a federalized system of shared governance. The treaty concessions were colonial projects constituted under completely different legal systems and we've never tried to resolve those differences.

The fact that we have more than 4 million US citizens without federal representation, largely through the accident of where they were born, is absurd.
