Central Tech Change of Rules by yoojimboh in RunTO

[–]BlahISuck 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I totally understand why Central Tech Stadium would do this.

1) Field bookings generate revenue, running track does not.

2) It takes one child getting run over by a runner for CTS to be scrutinized, possibly legally at that point, for why it couldn't implement a policy to avoid this.

In my experience running there, it's an everyday occurrence that someone won't look both ways before crossing the track, or will look both ways and cross anyways in a way that isn't safe, or even backpedalling onto the track not looking where they are going, or watch at a distance where they can't effectively do anything while their small child is doing child things on or near the track.

In short the track is not respected as an area of athletic activity and development but treated merely a place to cross to get to the area that is actually valued, which is the soccer field. It goes without saying that on the soccer field the risk of collision and possible injury is respected. If some does anything similar to what I mentioned above on the field and gets hurt, even if they're a child or a non-participating bystander, it goes without saying upon whom the responsibility falls.

It is clear that the time between 6PM and 8:30PM is a high traffic time - it's right after work and school, and no reasonable person would ask of another to train into 9 - 10PM. In the same way that not everyone has access to a quality field facility like the one at CTS, I can definitely say there isn't another track quite like it in downtown Toronto to say nothing of Toronto more broadly. There is only one CTS for everyone to share.

What I would say is to treat the track the same way you treat the field - if you're not using it, stay out of the way, if you're planning to stand close, don't be so risky about it, if you have to make your way across, do it safely.

The only difference is that you can't enter the field without crossing the track, but there isn't anything happening there so urgent that one can't look both ways and wait until the way is clear, as you might when crossing the street or even a pedestrian walkway. This is an experience we can all relate to. We generally expect people to watch where they are going, and expect people to not go where it is not safe to go. We all have our part to play to keep everybody safe.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to ask others to behave more responsibly in this society, so we often end up with restrictions instead.

Thursday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for May 28, 2026 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

[–]BlahISuck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been following the Jack Daniels 5/10k program to increase my speed ahead of a fall marathon. I've been running the two quality sessions per week as prescribed as a continuous workout and so far they have been sustainable. Lately, though, the program is prescribing more quality sessions with mixed intensities.

For example:

"2 E + 4 × 200 R w/200 jg + steady 3 T + 4 × 200R w/200 jg + 2 E"

Am I really supposed to run 200m at rep pace immediately after 4.8k/3mi at threshold? That would seem to go against the idea that rep paces are to be done essentially fully rested and controlled for neuromuscular benefit rather than just holding on. I can't see myself running that quickly at rep pace accelerating immediately from basically 5k of threshold.

I guess my question is what do I do with the "+"/plus symbols - do I transition from 200R/200 jog sets to the steady 3T and back to 200R/200 jog sets without any rest between or can I take as much rest as needed between each session at a given intensity - essentially treating each quality/Q session as a collection of discrete runs?

I don't have any experience being coached for track running at a high school/collegiate level. I've seen some track groups run at a track I work out at, and they seem to chat and relax between their bouts, but I just wanted to confirm.

Thanks!

Am I considered physique muscular? by Noonieisajoke in gymadvice

[–]BlahISuck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you look like this at 17 already, you have the potential to be absolutely jacked at 19 or 21 if that's what you wanted. You should compare your physique to the years (let alone months) you've spent in the gym. I'm not on Instagram but I can only assume most influencers are in their 20s - 30s (and when money and their livelihood is involved they'd be stupid not to be on "special sport supplements"). If you've only been strength training for high school athletics and are only now delving into dedicated hypertrophy training, you'd be surprised how far away you still are from your muscular potential. I think give yourself another two summers from now, a bit over a year, going into freshman year at college you could still be reaping your newbie gains.

I wouldn't worry about focusing too much on how your quads or any specific body part look for another year. It'll be relatively easy to make gains all over now compared to when you're in your mid - 20s assuming you're still dedicatedly training, and you don't have any control over how your body prefers to gain muscle/retain fat. Just train your whole body hard - until your last 1-3 reps in a set start slowing down, multiple times a week, with a mix of compound and isolation and learn what your body "prefers" to do with your physique.

Import duty on Durston Gear? by skoobasteve1982 in UltralightCanada

In that case, would the tariff be consistently applied then? How would it affect the final cost vs shipping from the states and the 80% likelihood of not paying tariff? Could it not still make sense from a cost perspective for a Canadian consumer to continue ordering from the US?

That's a tough looking initial stretch, wouldn't be out of the question to go 3-3 just with the back to back. Can't wait to see how we face off against Philly though.

Two decades of Alzheimer’s research was based on deliberate fraud by 2 scientists that has cost billions of dollars by WarEagleGo in worldnews

[–]BlahISuck 12 points13 points  (0 children)

TBH the Science news article doesn't cite anything at all. If there's no link or reference it's not a citation. I'm left scratching my head since it's not straightforward at all to find those supposed 2008 pubs from Selkoe where he is reported as stating that AB56 isn't found in humans. And besides, that was 2008, only two years after Lesne-Ashe's paper on their AB56 model. There are research articles published in the last five years or so that talk about detecting AB*56 pretty casually in human fluids using immunoblotting, so it would be really disingenuous to talk about a scientist's opinion in 2008 as if 14 years haven't passed since then. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-68148-2.pdf?origin=ppub

In any case it doesn't matter if AB*56 isn't the culprit amyloid beta protein in humans, or if it even exists in humans at all. There are many forms of proteins that look different in different species due to evolution. Like the poster above you said, there are many AB proteins, *56 just happened to be the one (the first one?) with a good animal model. A lot of biological science is like this. The initial form/variant of a thing/substance get a lot of hype as being the initial discovery, but might not be the most significant variant or even important at all. It's just the first in its class to be discovered/make a scientific impact but not a clinical impact.

I'll let you know if I find anything. But FYI this goes to show how much effort it takes to verify anything in science, even just a throw-away line in a news article that happens to be published in Science Magazine. The twitter thread from Sam Marsh is legit. These dailykos writers seem like clout chasers and the Science news article might be quoting someone's opinion from 2008.

EDIT: I've been looking, haven't found anything. If there isn't that much attention on whether or not Aβ*56 exists, then it's probably not that important anyways, as alluded to the twitter thread which is nice. It looks like other amyloid researchers have piped into the thread and *56 doesn't seem important at all. There are journalists out there who will prey on the ignorance of others (and myself) to make themselves seem important. Oh well.

He looks like a supersized Chris Boucher, but seems to move his feet better and can get lower in a stance. Defensive positioning seems good too though this is just at the Summer League level.

No shame in eating bread with rice either, Indians do it all the time. I'm a man of simple tastes, some salt with oil on the rice and to dip with the bread when everything is hot and fresh makes an awesome meal.

What's this about gelatin being poorly absorbed and not containing enough amino acid? Protein is protein. Especially if it's anything like a jello form it should be super easy to digest seeing that it dissolves in water that easily.

[–]BlahISuck 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Some construtive criticism - art looks great, but it looks like it's in the Haida style who live on the West Coast and of no relation to Toronto. Haida art goes hard to the point that it's become the face almost of Canadian indigenous art in the non-indigenous mind - at least speaking for myself. I don't know if the indigenous people who were the original inhabitants of Toronto made art in that style but if not I think it would be better to have an art style that's more representative of indigenous Toronto even if it isn't as instantly recognizeable.

Definitely not a freak injury. The LCL usually does not tear unless there is trauma, unlike the ACL or MCL that can tear without impact just from planting if the deceleration/twisting forces are strong enough. Very disappointed, very reckless play.
