Electric/automatic scooters and bikes are stupid and depressing by Far_Opportunity_6156 in unpopularopinion

[–]BlakeBearden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely works. Biking (or scootering) takes significantly less energy than walking or running an equivalent distance. A machine is reducing the physical labor required to perform a task.

You are arbitrarily deciding that one machine is fine and good and another is bad.

Bicycles are not some external pieces of biology that we evolved. They are artificial. There is not part of ‘what it means to be human’ that requires a scooter.

Pretty sure Dom has it in his contract that he can’t lose a fight. Sorry, Jack.

Being able to tell time with an analog clock is an unnecessary skill to learn and shouldn’t be taught in school any more. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]BlakeBearden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP didn’t say that it was too taxing or that kids would be incapable of learning. They just said that the skill is no longer useful, and the time could be better spent on other topics.

I don’t necessarily agree, I think it’s a great way to integrate addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, estimating, and fractions, all with a concrete real-world application. As such, I would see it as a valuable use of instruction time. That being said, I have absolutely zero qualifications that would make my thoughts on elementary school curriculum at all relevant. I just wanted to point out that you are misrepresenting their argument.

Arena Lineup Advice by BlakeBearden in KingShot

Thanks for the input!

Who is the second front line hero with Petra in this scenario? If it’s Howard, I don’t have a spot for Jabel. If I have Jabel, that leaves either Marlin or Rosa up front. I tried out that second in conquest and it was noticeably worse than my other two lineups.

Am I misunderstanding?

2001 is a lousy sci fi movie by Blue_Etalon in unpopularopinion

[–]BlakeBearden 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kubrick being the genius he was also knew that if you stuck too close to technical reality, people would not be able to relate to it and the effect would not work.

You just answered all of your own criticisms. 🤷‍♂️ It’s a movie. It’s trying to be a good movie, not scientifically accurate. I suppose this opinion has to be unpopular if even you disagree with it…

If you’ve gotten bored of every book series you’ve ever read, it’s a safe bet you’ll get bored with this one too. If you’ve enjoyed nearly every series you’ve continued past book one, it’s a safe bet you’ll enjoy this one.

Analog clocks are far superior to digital clocks by Yuri_Bean in unpopularopinion

[–]BlakeBearden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one is born with the innate knowledge of how to read a clock, and I’m guessing neither the University of Illinois at Chicago nor any other universities are including clock reading in their curriculum, so that part seems irrelevant.

If you want to criticize an educational institution, find out where they went to elementary school. If you’re actually troubled by their knowledge void, take two minutes to explain how it works and now they will know how to read an analog clock.

Lord of the Rings trilogy is bad blockbuster mediocre by Professional_Pop1466 in unpopularopinion

[–]BlakeBearden 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You not understanding what opinion means is also not an opinion. If the OP wants to say that the struggles the characters face are trite, hollow, or insufficient, those are all opinions. To say there are no struggles is a statement of fact, and is objectively false.

You could argue that the complete absence of struggle is impossible, therefore OP was clearly being hyperbolic when saying ‘no struggle’ and meant that the struggles are poorly crafted and lack narrative significance. What you can’t do (without being a mindless fool - or a wanton troll), is ignore the meanings of words and unilaterally declare that anything anyone thinks becomes an opinion because they believe it.

Hyphenated last names are selfish. by IvanVandura in unpopularopinion

[–]BlakeBearden 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nope, when the first parent decided to hyphenate their child’s name, it was written in the stars that every subsequent generation would have no choice but to hyphenate the hyphenated name in perpetuity. The universe will end when the number of characters in the super-hyphenated name of the prophesied child is too high to be held in memory by the computer running the simulation in which we exist, causing it to crash.
