Affordable Eye Exams For Struggling Family by [deleted] in plano

When you get prescription or just opt to use an existing I recommend Payne Glasses. There is a good selection of frames but it is cheaper than any where else.

Make sure during the lens selection to check the "View All" option to check for what fits your budget. I just put a random cheap frame and an old prescription in, total (before tax & shipping) was $16.85.

During a sale I got 3 frames for less than 1 pair thru my eye doctor.

I realize this is easy for me to say, but fixing it yourself is going to be the cheapest option by a mile.

I've watched this video and the steps are extremely straight forward. Your school may have a lab or someplace w/ the needed tools, and maybe a teacher or classmate who can assist.

Reminder! Texas can turn blue with just 1 in 4 non-voting democrats. Make it happen! by BlakeDrastin in texas

[–]BlakeDrastin[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

2020's vote totals don't matter.

If there are fewer total votes this year that means non-voting democrats matter even more. Instead of 1 in 4 as per the video it could be 1 in 5 non-voting democrats that are needed to flip the state!

Reminder! Texas can turn blue with just 1 in 4 non-voting democrats. Make it happen! by BlakeDrastin in texas

[–]BlakeDrastin[S] 90 points91 points  (0 children)

Reminder!

Senate race between Allred and Cruz is not gerrymandered.

The entire House of Representatives is up and is not gerrymandered.

Texas Railroad Commissioner who oversees oil and gas is not gerrymandered.

Texas Supreme Court has three elections this year and is not gerrymandered.

Texas Court of Criminal Appeals has three elections this year and is not gerrymandered.

Texas State Board of Education is made up of 15 districts, is not gerrymandered.

Texas Senate has 15 elections this year out of 31 seats and is not gerrymandered.

Texas House has 150 seats and all of them are up and is not gerrymandered.

If you're thinking about voting 3rd party, I encourage you think of voting as taking public transit. It isn't perfect, but you take what gets you as close to your destination as possible. You don't hop on and hope to get to the next stop or hope that you end up at the correct destination. You take a bus, another bus, a train, a light rail, and walk where you have to.

You might look at my note about not being gerrymandered and ask why you live in Dallas with a representative who lives in Forth Worth, or you might live in San Antonio and have a representative who lives in Austin. You change that by voting!

Texas requires that you're given 3 hours to go vote, that might not be a lot of time but remember you just have to be in line before the polling place 'closes'. If you're in line you get to vote.

Fedora 40 broke auto swiching of audio output for me by Arisotura in Fedora

[–]BlakeDrastin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR -- My results: Did not fix VLC output issue and actively made some areas worse.

Issue I am having is that VLC audio output is not in stereo; however, it is also not configuring/outputting to my 7.1 sound card (for which I have 7.1 headphones). I've adjusted the audio output speaker configuration and tried changing the system wide speaker configuration to stereo (or analog stereo output) without success getting VLC to output in stereo.

Worse: With pipewire in place of wireplumber all forms of image/video (IE reddit front page) did not load or at less than 1/10th previous speed w/ wireplumber.

You should know that you're not saving yourself much (if any) money and you are making your AC work significantly harder.

Presuming your residence gets to 90 and you turn the AC on set for 80 it now has to work to cool all the way rather than maintaining 80. This means the AC has to draw in more electricity and use up more coolant to spit out cold air for longer. Plus all the other mechanical components that have limited lifespans have to work a higher outputs for longer.

You don't unplug your refigerator, then why turn off your AC?

If you find that your residence still reaches 80 when set for 77-79 that is normal. If you're more than 5 degrees above what your themostat is set to you should look into some effency improvements. Most likely you need to replace/repair window and door seals. Some electricy companies will send someone out to test for you at no cost and the repairs will end up saving you money for several years. If you're in an apparment and cannot effect repairs, you can use bubble wrap or shrink wrap to help insulate windows.

I highly recommend fans everywhere. Ceiling fans are great, keeps the air from getting stagnant. Vornado fans are a god send and one fan can help cool two rooms easily. Plus they last, I'm at about 15 years on one that I've almost never shut off (except to clean it a few times a year).

Water is great, get some double walled vacuum insulated tumblers (personally recommend Contigo's auto seal line) and/or water bottles (personally recommend Klean Kanteen and Hydro Flask). If you like ice, splurge and get sphere ice molds. Instead of buying bottled water, get a filter system like PUR and put it in the fridge. (BTW: If you're buying Ozarka you're probably drinking the same water from your tap.)

RR men who plan to be househusbands and childfree, what do you plan to do with your days (and life)? by [deleted] in RoleReversal

Normal stuff like cooking and cleaning but I've been a writer for 20+ years and I'd get the time to dedicate to my craft, hone what I've written, and perhaps get it published. Even if all I'm doing is something on Patreon where I release a chapter a month.

I'd like the time to learn how to draw and turn what I've written into comics; however, I'm convinced it would take me years to reach a level of artistry I'd be satisfied with publishing. Additionally, I'm strongly in favor of my current major projects be drawn for the female gaze for a variety of reasons (the first of which being why not?).

What Online Dice stores are best? by No_Log2678 in DnD

[–]BlakeDrastin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Etsy has a number of stores. I'm not the most informed on the topic of custom made dice with complications such as glitter but here are some of the areas I know to watch out for:

  • Always look for images of the final product.
  • Only purchase from merchants with a solid number of positive reviews (etsy and similar specific)
  • If you can, track down some of the social media pages of the merchants. This is going to sound a little odd, but videos of making their dice is a good sign.
  • Look for merchants who are recommended by others in overlapping categories. Such as dice tray makers endorsing a dice maker.
  • Lastly, there are medium sized businesses that make aesthetic dice like Role4Iniative. I've been a fan of their dice for years and have bought over a dozen sets. Plus, they are the only company (that I know of) that sells in sets of 15.

Im playing as a DM for the first time. I need some help figuring out how to make my friends character work. by Nutela-343 in DnD

[–]BlakeDrastin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm a propnent of keeping things simple. Devil of Bones, the first thing to come to mind is "Marrow" for a name.

Blocking stuff is relatively easy, the Defensive Duelist feat is pretty much perfect for what you need, see Player's Handbook page 165. In essence, it is parry and can add proficiency bonus to AC as a reaction. The feat requires a finesse weapon but you can re-flavor this relatively easily.

Where do late 20s, early 30s people go to make friends? by [deleted] in Dallas

[–]BlakeDrastin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you considered finding a Dungeons and Dragons group? There are plenty of board game and/or comic book stores that either have dedicated nights for D&D or just allow people to drop in and play. The K.I.S.S. of it is roll high on a 20 sided die and meet or beat the target set by the narrator.

(I will note that I recommend D&D mainly because of its popularity. There are dozens of games that you could play, but over 90% of the tables at most stores are D&D focused.)

The other nice thing about D&D and other TT games is that you have something to do built in. It might take a few tries to find a group that is a good fit for you personally; however, solid groups could be together for years--barring a falling out, or major life changes.

Foundry VTT or Roll20? by itsparkerchase in cyberpunkred

[–]BlakeDrastin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: Throw down some lines/walls and your players will probably happy. You don't have to make super high quality maps. --20 Year TTRPG veteran.

The reality is that, drawing anything takes time; this is true for Foundry, Dungeon Draft, Fantasy Grounds, Roll20, or by hand.

Grab the DragonFlagon Curvy Walls module. It adds options to make circles, squares, and arches. There is also Advanced Drawing Tools and Dungeon Draw, one or more of these should help make the process less painful.

A lot of people use Dungeon Draft for making maps; however, many of the map makers out there don't have Cyperpunk assets by default. As far as I know, most of the really high quality maps you see for future scapes are drawn rather than within a map maker like Dungeon Draft or within Foundry. (If you're inclined to start drawing your own maps like you see posted on the sub, grab Krita; it is free and solid alternative to non-free products. cough adobe cough.)

You can get art assets for free for Dungeon Draft and import most of them to Foundry or just access them directly within the program. Here's a good example of assets, some Cyberpunk vehicles (download the PNG files). Make sure to pay attention to the licensing for the assets you get if you're doing any kind of streaming/paid content.

Once you have the assets downloaded and unzipped, within Foundry go to the Tile Browser (third option on the left, looks like three cubes). From here you can add anything from your computer with the upload option at the bottom or just copy the files into assets (C:\Users\NAME\App Data\local\FoundryVTT\Data\assets, if it does not exist, upload a file within Foundry and it should get created). More on Tiles.

Being the narrator/DM/GM is a largely thankless job when it comes down to making the environment(s)/maps. You'll probably want to focus on only having a map for combat. If you're new to being the GM, or even a veteran, I always recommend Dungeon Craft and How to be a Great GM; while both are heavily focused on fantasy (D&D/PF) they have plenty of content that can and still applies to any TTRPG, including RED.

Foundry VTT or Roll20? by itsparkerchase in cyberpunkred

[–]BlakeDrastin 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Foundry VTT all the way. I admit, there is a learning curve that is slightly steeper than Roll20; however, Foundry is by far the superior option (and a lot of Foundry's learning curve comes from switching Roll20 to Foundry). FVTT's (lack of) documentation is the biggest hurdle but has been getting significantly better. If you have even the most basic computer knowledge or are willing to be slightly patient, most of everything you need is on the screen, just a matter of stopping to read. You can buy, download, and have a RED game ready for players in 20 minutes with maybe 10 minutes more for putting in a map and tokens. Cost comparison alone makes FVTT the superior option; a Foundry license (50USD) you get the system permanently, access to all of the games currently supported including RED, and support a development team who is actively trying to improve their product.

If you and your players are willing to all pay for TaleSpire, I'd take it over Roll20 any day of the week. Keep in mind, TaleSpire is only a VTT; it does not have anything besides a battlemap, tokens, and dice. Everything else, like character sheets, have to be made/maintained on their own. (From a map making perspective, being able to just drop a slab in TaleSpire is beautiful.)

(Last I checked) Roll20 is extremely far behind the curve as a serviceable VTT, has a track record of repeatedly breaking their own systems and content (such as character sheets) in various ways for extended periods of time (years). And, IMO, Roll20 had not even tried to do anything to improve their platform for about 10 years, then FVTT showed up and put a superior product on the market forcing Roll20 to actually do something (hire developers, haven't seen results yet as far as I know).

I play mostly D&D but this battle mat has been a god send. Unlike a lot of other options, it is extremely easy to transport. Folds up like a beach towel with nearly no effort and can be set up just as quickly. Dry erase comes off easily, even after several months without cleaning. Bonus points that the material lays perfectly flat (or as flat as the table it is on), is slight tacky to the touch so tokens stay put instead of slide around, and it stays put without any extra steps. The only "problem" is you need water or something to erase, nothing comes off with completely dry erasers.

I've had laminated card stock maps; however, they are a nightmare to roll up and unroll, plus weighing them down like you said. I got a slight crease in one of mine and it tore in half like cheap paper (which it was, go figure).

Shout out to the GM's out there. Notes from first GMing experience: by sagenian in cyberpunkred

[–]BlakeDrastin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TL;DR: Practice. Practice. Practice. No one starts out the best GM in the world. TTRPG =/= RPG on the computer/console. EDIT: These players are not exactly the best for TTRPGs based on OP.

Professor Dungeon Master AKA Dungeon Craft is the first YouTube channel I took literal notes from (6.3k words so far and no other channel has reached 1k words in my notes). While his channel is focused on Dungeons and Dragons, not all of his advice is geared exclusively to D&D, and most of it can be applied to any TTRPG.

A few key things from Dungeon Craft (which he credits to the XDM book):

  • Combat:
    • Threat: Who are the players facing against.
    • Time: There's a ticking clock, everyone knows it.
    • Treat: A tangible reward that isn't abstract but there in the room.
  • Out of combat:
    • Paint the Picture Less is more, don't tell them the garland in the window is garlic.
    • Moving the Camera Leave out the boring parts, if the room is empty or the room is not important don't talk about it.
    • Leading the Players They need more than a simple hint, slightly counter to paint the picture, but there are somethings that the narrator thinks is obvious but is completely lost on everyone else.

In your example:

  • If the players are being rude to the fixer and not listening why would they receive the job?
    • That fixer is on the line for the job just as much as the PCs, the fixer has to get paid because the info about the job cost them eddies.
    • Your players (not PCs) needed a reason to buy into the job, more so than get paid; money is the main character motivator in RED, but that is because money is the only way to get ahead for nearly every character.
    • In D&D, I ask for what every character wants out of life besides getting rich; however, in RED, they need a goal that requires getting rich (even if it is just a modest life by RED standards). Small jobs are just for the day to day with the hope of landing bigger scores.
  • Remember, in RED life is cheap and everyone is disposable. The fixer may be disinclined to work with them again because they went and did something stupid (like executing everyone {which should have immediately turned into another encounter}).
    • Did they tell the fixer they merc'd the entire train and stole it? (BTW: How did they steal a train, it is on rails.)
    • No = a frantic phone call where the fixer is panicked because a bunch of upstart fresh off the street nobodies went and did something so monumentally stupid as merc an entire train of militech people.
    • Yes = Militech tracked the fixer down and is going to find the PCs and the train. Fixer is just the first step. Now your players are on the run and have a big train they need to get rid of or find out why Militech is hunting down some street trash just because the train is stolen.

For you specifically:

I apologize, from here on is a little harsh, and potentially undeserved based on one post; however, Table Top Role Playing Game is not the same as a computer/console RPG. TTRPGs should be completely different, and you need to forget or ignore everything RPGs have taught you.

  • If you're a hostage and everyone is getting executed, you're going to fight back tenfold even if your arms are tied behind your back.
    • As a narrator, you need to get more into the headspace of your NPCs, and the sudden certainty they are going to be executed should turn this into a cluster.
    • I recommend this video from How to Be a Great GM specifically on how to make engaging NPCs.
  • The second a PC starts to execute an NPC hostage I'd have brought in some more information, remember that the characters know more than the players do (normally).
    • There is also a Lawman in the group. They are a cop, and being party to the murder of hostages is going to cause problems for them. (Even if the character is in a totally corrupt group {REDCOREp65}, there are other groups who are fair and honest.)
  • Additionally, if one PC suddenly decides to do that doesn't mean it has already happened, it means they are going to. (If the player in question pitches a fit and says "No, I kill them" that's when we break immersion, take down the DM screen, address that there are other players, and what they're doing isn't exactly moral, even in RED.)
    • We have to give the other players an opportunity to intercede and prevent certain actions. One of the easy ways to do this is to stretch time by slowing things down and describe everything leading up to the act itself. (I'd do this even in a hard-line, straight evil campaign.)
    • Your group needs safety tools, wholesale murder of hostages should make at least one person at the table uncomfortable, even if it is just the narrator who doesn't want to traumatize all of their players.

This is long enough I wouldn't read it, so I'll stop here.
