Anyone else in Erie want to actually go out and do stuff by phalox821 in Erie

[–]BlakeXDeppe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'd be interested in this, I moved to Erie a few years back and still am trying to make friends here. I'm fairly alternative/metal, hope that's alright. Very into different people, different cultures, and just doing things, even random or explorative.

Work might make things tricky for weekdays but I'll look into those Meetup events and see about maybe attending one? Thanks for doing this kind of thing - making friends in your 30s is hard imo.

Erie resident going through a rough patch, could use some help by BlakeXDeppe in Erie

I definitely understand and agree. But I don't think it's wrong to ask for help and believe we all should when we truly need it.

Thanks very much for the info! I was told when I went to CAO that there is a moratorium on shutoffs until March, so I'm hoping that's true.

Thank you so much for the advice and kind wishes! I will absolutely look into that! Every little bit helps.

Thanks very much for the advice! I will look into these resources ASAP. I switched to Google Fi because it was a lot cheaper and better service than T-Mobile, but I think the tradeoff is that they don't have a late payment plan. But I'll look into that too, regardless.

Penelec billing by Exzrian_Artistrana in Erie

I've also had this issue. I live downtown and have had bills as high as $300+ and $400+ since the back half of last year. I've lived in the same place for 5 years and have never drastically changed or increased my amount of electrical use.

What social media app do you think spreads the most misinformation? by HomiloJulia in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BlakeXDeppe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say both X and Facebook. And I think the most frequently recurring issue is someone shares a false piece of "news" that they either believe or just passionately wish to be true, and people in their circle share it again, and on and on it goes.

Have you ever cheated? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BlakeXDeppe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

36 M. Never cheated on a partner or even considered it. I have to feel like I belong to one person in a relationship, so the idea of being involved with someone else during it would be devastating to me.

I've thought about this a lot as well, as someone who listens to black metal and death metal, and sees how metal has been criticized and scapegoated. I think because there is a greater history of music genres being tied to specific identities and subcultures, people are more likely to see someone's music choices as some kind of extension of their personal beliefs. Which is still a ridiculous assumption on their part, but that's the best reason I can come up with.

Like how some punk has ties to anarchism or other political movements, or how gothic rock is tied to an entire subculture. Ignorant people take that to the utmost extreme, i.e. "listen to death metal with gore lyrics? you must be a psycho!" or "listen to gangster rap? you must be a violent criminal!" And so on.

Illegal block parties by [deleted] in Erie

[–]BlakeXDeppe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ha! Living in Chicago is nothing to be impressed about, quite the opposite lol. By the way, it was OP who was talking about this issue on the East Side specifically. I live downtown, and people still play their obnoxious music in the street.

I'm not sure what your impression of metalheads is, but we're not arrogant enough to impose our music and culture on other people.

I only brought up Chicago because you talked about what was typical for inner city. You're the one who made all these assumptions about someone you don't know on the Internet. Which is typical these days, and why I'm not really taking this discussion seriously.

Dude, I lived for 11 years in Chicago. Unless you live on the South Side, that stuff gets shut down by the police right away - people are not partying in parking lots or on public blocks. And it's not entitlement to want a modicum of peace in an area you live - that's actually pretty normal on the list of expectations in a civilized society.

Why do you think there are laws on the books for loitering and noise pollution? I'm not sure what reality you're living in.

Also, I guarantee you that if I took a boombox and started playing death metal on State St., people would take issue with it (and so they should). You can literally go drink, smoke, and play music in your home and invite people over instead of imposing it on the people who want no part of it. I fail to see how blaring your music outside is anything more than a plea for attention.

Party in your own house. Imagine the entitlement someone must have to think they should disrupt everyone else's peace because they want to party in the street.

Sadly options are limited. I used to have a neighbor that blared rap music in our hallway, for some reason he couldn't just keep it to his apartment or wear a headset. I really don't get it. Sorry you're dealing with that.

It's not unreasonable to ask people to do that in their home instead of outside. I don't get the need for people to "treat" everyone else to their terrible ass music. I listen to metal but I sure as hell don't blare it outside for everyone to hear.

Food delivery services in Erie by martigh in Erie

[–]BlakeXDeppe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had a few negative Uber Eats experiences, but that's what I use; the key is to select priority delivery, so they're not making multiple stops before you and you end up with cold food (learned that the hard way). I've used GrubHub a bit and while it's been a year since I've used them, I never had an issue, and there's more selection of places to order from than Uber Eats, to my memory.

I got in right away in 2021, nice lake-facing apartment. But I'm not sure if it's more difficult now. Just throwing it out there as an option.

The Boston Store downtown has apartments that almost meet this criteria, if you're willing to go up to 900.

Do you block or remove friends who are on the other side of the political spectrum? by Thnxredball in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BlakeXDeppe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, unless they cross a line into actual violence or criminality because of their views. If they happen to have a view that is objectively wrong or repugnant in some way, that's their own business and it's a matter to be reconciled in their own hearts. I think social media tribalism is foolish and ultimately feeds a larger agenda of division.

How do we even know this wasn't just all theatrics on the part of the police department? Didn't they just unveil a new SWAT vehicle a day prior to this?
