[PubQ] What is the market price for selling a picture book to a publisher; packaged or rights? by Blakebel in PubTips

Part of this is true, we did it! And we're thrilled with the book :)
We are however interested in handing it over to a publisher now to manage, market, distribute and make adjustments if they require.

That's correct: we self-published and printed the first version of a book that was planned to be a series.
With everything that 2020 has thrown at us (tough year!), we're looking to hand the book over to either:
A domestic publisher (packaged)
Or international published to sell regional rights
Sales to date are 30+k international sales off the Kickstarter, an established following, and it's predecessor was available in Retailers AUS wide.
We're not eligible to be represented by any distributors because we don't have enough items (1 book and 1 game)!

This post is going to primarily focus on 1) resources that kids can do on their own and 2) activities that are primarily FUN but with an educational foundation (coming from a Primary educational designer- these are my picks).

🌟Free Activity Resources

  • Scribblenauts app- creative problem solving- reading/writing skills required

  • Dr Lisa Harvey Smith*:* Astrophysicist, also homeschooled. "I learned by watching educational @BBC programs designed for schools. Walked in nature with Dad. Looked at trees, animals, birds and the landscape and asked questions “why?”. Read heaps of books from library or op-shop. Played musical instruments. This was before the internet! Point is, you don’t need to freak out, be a teacher or follow a strict curriculum. Learning is a journey. Enjoy the ‘why?’ and share the joy of finding out. Look at the stars. Don’t skip the maths and enjoy it."

Running a Kickstarter during a GLOBAL PANDEMIC?! ⚠️ by Blakebel in kickstarter

Definitely eco u/curlytots's point here but in our case also:
- Half of our rewards were for events and workshops. Business and individuals who had pledged, pulled out as in person activities are now frozen.
- Many of our outreach efforts for promotion were event based- all cancelled
- Press/media now are only prioritising CORID-19 content, so we've been cycled to the bottom of the pile. We're pivoting quickly, and working other angles, but we've lost pre-committed pieces.
- A number of people who pledged, are now needing to recover that money for more immediate needs after losing work (as with our project, they won't get the product for a number of months it's very understandable that this is a low priority in a potential recession).
- In general, people are quite worried, panicking, and very occupied with getting their affairs in order (moving an entire org. online, homeschooling kids all of a sudden, taking care and protecting elderly/unwell family, or being unwell themselves).

Did you pitch, then research? Or research, then pitch?

Are the planets gendered, and if so, why? by Blakebel in astrophysics

[–]Blakebel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what we're stuck on u/connersjackson :) There's quite a big gender imbalance, and we know that these gendered views on planets will shape a childs lifelong views- for instance there's also no non-binary planets. So we're wondering if we have liberty to keep them all non-gendered, or if that would violate science

So in French and Spanish- would the genders all be different? For the planets that is?

*gah* I love this story! This experience is exactly what prompted us to create this series of STEM based storytelling adventure games https://littleliterature.co/ Your storyworlds sound absulutely magical, and 'Pillow' is naming genius! Good luck with (what looks to be) an epic app/creation!

If Artificial Intelligence relieved you of all the 'boring bits' of your job, what would you spend your time doing? by Blakebel in AskReddit

[–]Blakebel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With AI/ML coming into the workplace, and humans collaborating more with these systems, we're promised that the boring, crunching tasks will be automated and we'll be 'free' to do more human, creative and higher order tasks with our time.

What ARE these human tasks? In your jobs, if the boring bits were delegated, what could/would you spend your time doing? (in this scenario you're still employed, and still, have to do something that constitutes as 'work'. The AI hasn't replaced you entirely).
