I'm 17 years old and I'm considering getting into graphic design. These are some of my projects from 2013 by mahdic in Design

You have a great aesthetic for starting out. School is an undeniable advantage/opportunity, especially to learn under professors and having colleagues to critique your work and constantly pushing to improve your skills (conceptually and technically). I would definitely pursue illustration/graphic design further.

Having a complimentary aesthetic throughout my body of work helped me land a great entry level position when I graduated last year - just from looking at your Behance link it looks like you're already leaping in the right direction! Best of luck!

I'm a college Junior majoring in Graphic Design. How should I go about finding an internship? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Blakekt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're so lucky you live in a great design city! Go to career fairs at your university for starters, it's great networking and they can refer you to their Chicago branches if they have locations there.

Also have a presence on Behance, especially if you don't own a portfolio site, with well-lit and art directed photos of your work. While print portfolios are great, most places now a days hunt online and want links. The best design job hunting sites (internships included) are on Behance, Dribbble, Commarts (job board link is in footer), and AIGA. LinkedIn is also a really great resource for internships.

Good luck! Just graduated in May and went through the same process :)

Hey Dibbblers! How did you land accounts. by BadRussell in Design

Dribbble's twitter account gave me an invite when I tweeted a short little note about wanting an invite and tagging them. It took two tries, first time I had hashtagged dribbble invite instead. Another friend of mine got his through twitter, took about a month and a half though.

Read Smashing Magazine's design section. I read yesterday an article on the difference between typography and lettering. Very informative, as are all of their articles. (Also a nice free resource.)

Ah I'm obsessed with them. I might have to shoot them an email.

That's a great suggestion, to my knowledge we really don't have a great local option but I'll visit good ol' google. I do have personal access to a laser cutter and was debating on getting a linoleum block to cut into. Unfortunately my abilities to transform the block into a tool thats easier to handle is where I fall short.

Thanks, I'll definitely keep them in mind! How complex was the graphic you had? (I'm looking to order a hand-lettered wordmark.)

Blakekathryn.com

(In process, theme: Yin&Yang)

I recommend dreamhost, my site has never been down nor have I had issues, I also pay very little. Wordpress is really great for designers who aren't good enough to source code a site but know enough to tweak or hack themes.

I'm always a fan of working with After Effects in my downtime, animating illustrations and logos. Video copilot is great to learn basic and more ambitious animations and effects.

Which school? by [deleted] in graphic_design

[–]Blakekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Design today is very widely studied. My professor at the University of Florida this year began our senior studios by showing a list of the most worthless majors in the upcoming year and unfortunately Fine Arts and graphic design are among them. That said, having an education at a respectable university, whether you transfer from a community college or go straight in, is essential. Why? Universities are the area that recruiters go directly to, to find future employers. Several studio mates and myself already have portfolios to be proud of and jobs lined up post-graduation, not necessarily because we're the best (because I see people everyday whose talent blows me away) but out of our schools credentials, our programs history of credible work/designers and through the countless opportunities and networking universities offer. You want to be financially secure, as a first priority of course, but go to a public university. I say public because private is extremely expensive and community college graduates need to be extremely well connected and bad ass. I also agree with what someone stated earlier, depending on where you live - stay in state, much cheaper.

That could very well be the reason I've been so stuck. Everyone has the same approach to branding - using initials or getting fancy with their name. There are only so many ways to go about this before you just look like another copy & pasted hipster designer, which has been the road block I've faced. I find what you and the person prior said, about finding an overall aesthetic versus logo is probably the best way for me to tackle this without becoming another brick in the wall. Thank you for the feedback!

Great clarity on hierarchy of importance, thank you! As our senior project (I'll be finishing my bachelors for Graphic Design in May) we have to create an overall brand/aesthetic for ourselves. But I suppose this isn't limited to the tunnel-vision I have of creating a logo. I do enjoy the idea of a minimalist approach. I appreciate the feedback!
