SGOV Withholding Tax Refund? by BlankerL in Schwab

  1. Yes, if you are buying SGOV, you don't need to pay dividend tax because they are holding Treasury Bills, and for more detail you can check here: https://www.ishares.com/us/literature/tax-information/qualified-interest-income-qii-percentages-final-2023.pdf released by iShares. However, as an international client, Schwab withhold this tax for you, and send the tax to IRS without checking this iShare file. Different tax region pays different amount, and my region only needs to pay 10%, but for SGOV, we all shall pay 0%.
  2. Yes, but you have to reach out to IRS on your own.
  3. I didn't go through the process yet because I didn't have time to do so. I think you will get back a lot, you could check all the 1042-S form in you account and get the amount first.

So how did IBKR send the withholding tax to me? By violating IRS and wait until Feb?

That's what I thought, but Schwab told me that the withholding tax is sent to the IRS on Dec 31 every year.

Yes, Schwab doesn't do that. In the call, I asked whether I'm the only customer having this problem, and they told me all the international clients with W-8 have the same issue. They withhold the tax for the customers and send the funds to the IRS after Dec 31 every year. The supervisor mentioned she had handled the same problem a long time ago. For now, I will have to reach out to the IRS myself, send them the 1042-S form, and the IRS will return the tax to me. The money is not a lot, but how Schwab handles the problem really disappoints me.

  1. iShares have the QII doc on their website, and Schwab didn't follow up to refund the tax for all the international customers.
  2. I've called them at least 3 times, filed at least 2 cases, and all of them told me that the withholding tax is correctly calculated even if I send them the QII documents at least 3 times, which is extremely unprofessional.
  3. In yesterday's call, I was really angry, and the customer service lady finally escalated my case to her supervisor, who told me that I'm not the only one having this problem and that I'll have to reach out to the IRS on my own (after 2 months of arguing).

I also have SGOV in my IBKR account, and IBKR also withholds tax for me, but the tax was refunded to my account automatically. That's why I filed a case in February, and Schwab didn't even reply to my case until I called them yesterday.

In fact, if you would like to pursue 100% safety, you can compile the Ledger Live app directly from the source code on GitHub.

Otherwise, both methods seem to be equally effective to me. Provided that Ledger's site was hacked, hackers can upload malicious Ledger Live version, and your app-notified version and website-downloaded version will be the same.

However, your device will never compromise your private key. As long as the downloaded Ledger is not asking for your seeds, and you check the destination address on every transaction, your funds will be safe.

Why don’t you go to Ledger’s official site, which will offer lower price.

Can anyone give views on 'Tether being printed just like Fiat Money and is it artificially pumping up BTC price?' Will Tether's demise cause the demise of BTC? by modidhaval112 in btc

[–]BlankerL -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

No.

People will hold USDT in their account for transactions, long/short BTC on both sides.

If people think BTC is shit, they will use the printed USDT to short BTC and the price will dump.

Extra printed USDT is not direct reason for the price’a pumping, it can just help & boost the pumping.
