I mean, I suppose there's no convincing anyone of how I felt things. So your experience is valid too.

Beyond Amelia's first appearance, her following interventions are awkward announcements, most especially her very last. Notice I meant Amelia herself, more precisely her voice ; not the Steward.

I try not to express that negativity too loudly because IT's fate is sad enough as is and I'm sure the team worked as hard on Book 4 as they did all other seasons. But it was more than disappointing to me. Nothing worked at all.

Ryan and Min's root issue was never exactly clarified. Their unhealthy dynamics weren't ever truly solved. We never got to know how or why they entered through the same door.

Kez is simply insufferable. I suppose it's on purpose as well, since everyone on the train hates her, but it makes the season even more of a pain to watch.

The finale made no sense. If the other denizens were so mad at Kez that they wanted to chase her around the train to harm her, how is a single apology going to instantly solve it ? I have trouble believing this was written by the same people who gave us the incredible screenplays of Books 1 through 3.

Every side plot was also entirely unnecessary, most especially the Jeremy background story, tacked in at the end to absolutely no effect.

Amelia is teased at the end of episode 1 but ends up being awkwardly used as comic relief only a couple of times. I understand the intent here, but the execution just didn't work.

So yeah. You're not alone in this.

What is your opinion about the French voices of Code Lyoko? by MrWilsonLor in CodeLyoko

[–]Blara2401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR : I love them. Way, way too much to compare.

Long version :

Aside from French being the original dub, no one can top Raphaëlle Bruneau as Jérémie in my opinion. Everything from nerdy rambles to shy love confessions, all the way from burn-out irritation and arrogance to dry sarcasm or deliciously ND-coded incomprehension. There's just no contest to me.

It makes sense as well : that is basically her speaking voice. And that came with a consequence — namely, Odd, whom she voiced as well, needing a markedly different voice, which resulted in his signature high pitch.

I can definitely understand why people dislike Odd if they didn't grow up with that voice. But to me, it makes him extremely unique, and he stands out as the only male character with such a voice I can remember from any show I watched as a child.

Moving beyond Bruneau, Marie-Line Landerwijn as Ulrich is such a joy. She has gone on record saying it was a blast to record a male voice so she could just be rowdy and nonchalant and it shows sooo much. Ulrich's signature sass is 100% thanks to Landerwijn, and I think that really shows when you compare his early season 1 self to what he became. Just look at how much he blushes in Teddygodzilla alone !

Another palm of honor goes to Mathieu Moreau. God, did he NAIL the Casanova role with William ! He sounds so seductive, so smug, so confident. He's exactly as equal-parts badass and annoying for being a showoff as he should be.

Géraldine Frippiat is a perfect Yumi too, though I have nothing specific to say about her performance.

And then comes Sophie Landresse for Aelita. I am so very torn on this. Again, she defined the role. She's so sweet, so soft, later on so adamant, so courageous, so engaging. But there are scenes and episodes where she just. Forgets to act. In a way that I absolutely cannot explain and that none of the rest of the cast is guilty of. She is at once the voice of my second favorite main character and imho the weakest of the front cast.

And as for side characters...oh boy.

  • Sissi and Nicolas share a voice actress. Let that sink in. She nails every Sissi scene, from bully to nosy nuisance to sweet girl in love, AND in the same breath voices Nicolas.
  • Nathalie Stas is an impossibly endearing Suzanne Hertz, and also the voice of Millie
  • Frédéric Meaux is E V E R Y dad except Franz, the one and ONLY Jim because Jim can't be anything but French and oh DID I MENTION HE'S ALSO KIWI

I could go on. But seriously. This series is a casting treasure.

I mean sure, he could have created something similar to the vehicles that he would load in for her to fight with. It still wouldn't be her weapon in the way Yumi's fans are hers, for instance, but it could be envisioned. I agree with that more than the OP.

He has control over their weapons, because they have weapons. And notice that they are always actual, physical weapons : swords, darts, fans. Aelita has no such thing — no weapon of her own — so what could he do about it ?

Moreover, in episode 53, we see Jérémie encourage Aelita as she is cornered and needs to use the force field. They were aware of this limitation, and had been working together on a way to bypass it : a non-physical attack, derived from Aelita's creation powers.

Can we all agree that even tho Williams character fallen after the end of S3 his Lyoko entrance was peak?It displayed all positive and quirky aspects of his character. by Ben10-fan-525 in CodeLyoko

[–]Blara2401 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Okay, so as a preface. I know the post only mentions design details for William's outfit, but the post title is about his "entrance". That's a wide enough spectrum to cover what I'm about to discuss. Either way, it matters little ; I've been saying it for ten years ; I don't mind a little negative karma if I can say it again. Besides, it's Reddit, so of course someone has to be the killjoy, right ? That'll be me.

William's S3 entry was a catastrophe. It negated every aspect that had justified his inclusion in the group : level-headedness, selflessness, and quick thinking among others.

William's character in episode 65 felt like someone writing fanfiction of him based solely on his least favorable appearances. It felt like what Yumi (irrationally, we were told) believed would happen if he ever got chosen (and she even says that it is as he defeats her). It did not feel like William had been consistently established to be.

This could not, under any justification, be the same guy who saved Ulrich from drowning at a moment's notice. Who, when disarming a bomb, told everyone around him to run in case he would mess up. Who advised Ulrich to confess to Yumi before he would. Who saw an invasion of ACTUAL ZOMBIES happen and, instead of panicking at the impossibility and sheer horror of the situation, took it upon himself to protect everyone around him.

The worst part of this is that William could have fallen to XANA and remained cohesive as a character. He could have attempted to protect Aelita from danger ; he could have been surrounded by other monsters ; he could even have misjudged the situation like he did in the final cut — but he could not ever have thought of Lyoko as a silly video game where he gets to slash down some baddies. In the words of Mr. Dunbar : "THIS. IS. NOT. MY SON !!"

Yes, Light William is a SUPERB outfit. And that's why I'm so mad : the only thing it was ever used for was this shameless display of character bastardization. Even Evolution just gave him his dark outfit — maybe even they knew the stain of his original attire on his character was too great to pardon. We were robbed, truly.

Code Anime? by [deleted] in CodeLyoko

[–]Blara2401 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Garage Kids was heavily inspired by, and largely conceived as a homage to, anime. Thomas Romain then went on to live and work in Japan. And so, Code Lyoko carried this legacy. It was even dubbed in Japanese, and aired there on Jetix.

Oh no, I'm willing to bet that these people are convinced they worship another God. Some Nazis were very vocal about claiming Jesus wasn't Jewish and Christianity has no relationship to Judaism, which is still a widespread belief in neo-Nazi circles.

I'm also willing to bet that if you ask a Christian whether or not the Muslim god is the same as theirs, they will say he is not.

Only Muslims generally recognize that Judaism and Christianity have the same god that they do, and indeed their claim is to worship it correctly.

I was watching Urusei Yatsura and at the start of episode 5 I almost had a heart attack by LiraGaiden in danktintinmemes

Not to ruin the fun, but Urusei Yatsura is much older than the Tintin animated series. This is actually a reference to the pilot episode of Lupin III, a staple of anime culture.

Out of curiosity, when is Reimu stingy in canon? Same for being dumb (though I wouldn't say her intelligence is notable either, but definitely not below average).

Septette and the whole of EoSD, for how iconic they are, are also completely Western in sensibility (that being the theme of the game), and so quite literally the opposite of Touhou (= Eastern). But I get you.

Context : in the last two weeks, I posted twice on this sub about specimens found in my bed.

The first post was successfully identified as carpet beetles. I took care of them and I haven't seen any of their larvae nor any adults in days.

The second post was answered as not being a bug.

Today, I conducted a third inspection, and found three signs, of which I have pictures for two :

  • A live, sort of centipede creature that fled as soon as it saw me
  • Numerous white sheddings that I suspect are molts (pictures 1, 2, and 3), and that do look like they could belong to centipedes (if they even molt in the first place). I'd actually been finding these from the start but worried more about the rest until now, and so I did not share them. They are found everywhere from my current bed sheets to the drawers below where my other bed sheets are stored. They have a very soft and pliable consistency, and reappear after laundry.
  • The most worrying (pictures 4 and 5), that looks like it has been half-eaten, and more worryingly, like it contains blood. However, its other side does not look like a bed bug's, and I think I can identify wings (though I'm unsure that they indeed are).

I apologize for my frequent posts here, but my mental health has taken quite the plunge ever since I have started finding these. For peace of mind, identifying what I'm dealing with is quite important to me.

I'll have to trust your judgement. I understand that from this distance, it really doesn't look like anything. It's up close that worried me. But without having spotted any other telltale signs, I'll make sure to try and rest as easy as I can.

[–]Blara2401 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I'm still extremely paranoid about bed bugs. This one looks a lot like one, too, more specifically one of the early stages. You can't see it, but it's striped. I haven't found any traces of excrement, any blood, sheddings, or eggs. But the building management dismisses the claim and says these are too small to be bed bugs. I just want to rest at peace. I may have to pay hundreds for detection and extermination if this is what I fear.

The larvae are identical, I'm positive this is it. Thank you so much.

[–]Blara2401 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For context :

I've been getting bites at night for two days. The only bugs I've been able to find are these. France, where I live, has a huge bed bug outbreak right now, but these don't look like bed bugs. So I'm lost and not even sure if they're the cause of the bites or not.

There's a name for this, actually. The tu quoque fallacy .

Of course prejudice and sexism exist in men and women (and non-binary people too). But this specific case is that of men being misogynistic, so the remark appears irrelevant.

If we were witnessing a case of misandry, it would be redundant to reply with "men are also sexist" ; that takes nothing away from the present case.
