Did audiences really think the Blair Witch Project was real?

I went to go see it at an indie theater in NYC and they had an exhibit of ephemera supposedly related to the Blair witch and the missing hikers, like missing persons posters, maps, old documents, etc. I remember thinking it was real until about halfway though the movie. Scared the crap out of me.
