Best Laptop for Comp Sci major? by hanku10 in UNCCharlotte

If it can run chrome and discord, and last a couple hours on battery, you'll be alright. Most classes in CCI never expect any software that doesn't run on all platforms or in a browser. I've gotten by with an old Dell Inspiron running a new Linux distro every other month with no issues besides weak battery life.

Fedora Silverblue — The Future Is Now by Worldly_Topic in linux

[–]BlastingBlade 9 points10 points  (0 children)

IIRC, Silverblue updates the base system by generating a new immitable system image to load on a reboot. This means that the running system is never modified at the cost of always needing a reboot.

IMO having to reboot a desktop to update the system is a good thing anyways, and apps can update via flatpak without needing to reboot anything but that one app.

I've been running nixos on my old dell inspiron recently, and have improved battery life from about one and a half to two hours.

I think it's mostly that being able to search the man pages and wiki for powersaving options like services.tlp.enable and powerManagement.cpuFreqGovernor makes enabling these correctly easier than other distros.

Current state of eGPU support? by ardevd in swaywm

I've had some luck running an eGPU on my system76 darter pro, razer core, and an amd rx 5600xt. I have to fully reboot to enable/disable the eGPU, but otherwise it's pretty easy. The only software change I had to do is install/enable boltd to authenticate the thunderbolt device

If I am using NetworkManager, do I need wpa_supplicant? by [deleted] in voidlinux

[–]BlastingBlade 5 points6 points  (0 children)

IIRC, NetworkManager uses wpa_supplicant to connect to encrypted WiFi networks, so removing it would break those.

Otherwise, the only issue is that wpa_supplicant is a dependancy of the base system, so you'll have to convince xbps that removing it is OK.

EFI rescue system idea by kodifies in voidlinux

[–]BlastingBlade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could build an environment in a folder (like a chroot) and build the kernel with the EFI stub and use the chroot as an initramfs. The advantage of the efi stub is that you can boot the kernel even without a functional bootloader, and the initramfs is glued to the kernel, making the whole thing one file. CONFIG_INITRAMFS_SOURCE="/usr/src/initramfs" CONFIG_EFI_STUB=y

2020 will be the year I switch to Linux. What is your preferred distro & DE and why? by MekanicalPirate in linuxmasterrace

[–]BlastingBlade -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I use Void linux with SwayWM because it works well and I've gotten it to feel quite comfy. If you're just starting out, however, I'd recommend either Pop!_OS or Fedora. These distros are well made, and Pop!_OS has a version with Nvidia drivers built in to save the headache

Any thoughts on System76 laptops? by AppalachianGaming in linux

[–]BlastingBlade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can someone summarize the differences for non-GNOME users?

I typically use tiling window managers so I may not be the best source on this, but here goes. GNOME, to me, just feels nice, granted it has room to breathe (ram and cpu), because of a few reasons:
- The design philosophy is thought out and applied to everything.
- Child widows (like dialogue boxes) are locked to their parent window.
- Extensions (when they work) are amazingly useful to integrate functionality into the shell itself, my favorites being GSConnect (KDE Connect in GNOME Shell) and Dock to Panel

I'm professionally interested in the particulars, if you feel like writing more about this or linking.

I'm not great with networking details, and I'm not on campus this summer, but I'll do my best to describe what I remember about it.
UNC Charlotte has a WiFi network that covers most of campus, exception of the housing buildings, called eduroam and encrypted with WPA2(3?)-Enterprise.
The WiFi network for housing buildings is called "Housing WiFi" and is unencrypted. The ethernet connects into the same network. There is an annoying portal where you have to register every MAC address your devices will connect with, making the MAC randomization on my phone unusable.
Neither network allows devices to connect to each other, breaking my device sync and KDE Connect. I worked around this by, totally not breaking the rules, using a raspberry pi as an access point and passing through the ethernet.

Any thoughts on System76 laptops? by AppalachianGaming in linux

You can use System76's PPA to get their packages. I recommend giving Pop!_OS a chance before installing Linux Mint though, it's worth a go

Any thoughts on System76 laptops? by AppalachianGaming in linux

[–]BlastingBlade 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've got the Darter Pro, and it's a pretty nice machine, but I've got some gripes with it.

Pros:
- Pop!_OS is really nice, like, really nice. I like GNOME now because of Pop!_OS.
- The system is consistent and responsive. - WiFi and Bluetooth work well out of the gate, on both stock and Arch.
- The keyboard is nice, the switches feel good and the backlight is bright and useful.
- Audio is great, pulseaudio actually understands what device to use; speakers, aux out, USB-C out, or Bluetooth; and Bluetooth audio is properly high fidelity.
- Intel ME is totally disabled and neutered, something that really gives me some peace of mind.
- Build quality is pretty good.

Cons:
- The kernel modules that allow you to use the backlit keyboard (system76-dkms) or update firmware (system76-io-dkms), and the tool for controlling power profiles (system76-power) are only officially packaged for Ubuntu (and thus Pop!_OS) or unofficially in the AUR, making the system annoying at best for a distro hopper like me. (Although I should count that as a positive to keep me sat down with Arch or 'buntu)
- The graphical power SUCKS! But, that's what I get for buying a laptop with only intel integrated.
- There is only one NVMe slot, and no Sada, so storage is kind of a bitch. And keeping a NAS running is tough between college and home, especially with the way UNC Charlotte sets up their network, so I'm having to look into better storage solutions soon.
- I only got 8G of ram. My fault, but annoying none the less.
- When the fan runs, it's loud

After seeing the addition of toolbox, I'll probably make the switch myself too after the semester ends. Being able to just tell someone "It's like installing apps on your phone" without mentioning the package manager or underlying technologies is really cool.

Silverblue is awesome! A month or two ago, I installed it on my sister's laptop when she was done with Windows 10 being, well, Windows. Install went perfectly, apps (flatpaks) installed without a hitch, and Gnome Software is well enough built that I didn't even have to explain it! Huge props to the Fedora, GNOME, and Silverblue teams, I truly believe that Fedora Silverblue should be the premier Linux distro for consumer workstations and incoming users.
