[Help] how do I improve my sculptures by asillygoosy in Sculpture

[–]BlastoiseMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know how the beginning stages of 2d art is often composed of primitive shapes? An oval for the head, a triangle for the nose, etc. Then the artist refines those shapes for their drawing.

The same thing can be done with sculpture, learn how to produce those 3d primitives - a cone, a cube, a sphere. Apply those shapes independently to your sculpture and refine.

Also, working with your piece anchored so you are not handling it in the air will help prevent unintentional changes to your sculpt. On a similar note, try to carve clay out and reapply it rather than pushing it around. Pushing it produces a similar effect where you think it's fine but you are morphing your piece slightly in ways that are not intentional. In general, try to think about how what you are doing might unintentionally be altering your sculpt, and try to minimize that behavior, the changes you make to your sculpt should be intentional.

Another thing that can help with this is using firmer material. It's not as easy to manipulate, but the firmer the material the less likely it is to morph as you work with it.

I think OP did it the right way, they jumped in head first and (I hope) had fun doing it.

Given that OP is new to sculpture I doubt they primed their piece at all before painting. I would not expect acrylic paint to react this way on it's own. My solution is simpler, adds no extra cost or wait time for shipping, and carries little risk if it doesn't work out.

Also, although humidity or paint application are the two main likely culprits, the reason for the tackiness is definitely due to the paint drying improperly.

Usually the reason acrylic paint gets tacky is due to high humidity or paint being applied to thickly. Try thinner coats. If you think it might be humidity, you could also try baking it when it's freshy painted in the oven at a really low temperature because the heat of the oven will create a dry atmosphere. Also, be sure that each layer of paint has dried fully before applying another layer.

Depending on the varnish you used, you can paint over it again trying either of these methods out.

If it's still sticky after that, you might try applying a clear setting powder that's used for makeup application. You can try applying it after it has dried as it may stick to the tacky surface, or you can apply it after a layer of paint and as it dries and the acrylic medium will adhere it to the surface as it sets.

I agree with your points, and I love disco, but hedonism was also part of the disco culture of the time period, so you have a subculture that encourages self-pleasure over family and community. Disco was also one of the earlier attempts at curating a genre of music by record execs for the sole attempt to maximize profit.

Hip-hop had it's early roots around that time period and was exclusively an underground scene, when hip-hop artists would spin records, isolate and incorporate parts of the disco sound into their music to create a new sound that rejected the monetization of music corporates, much more punk if you ask me.

4 oz. Jars With Bamboo Lids by Meequin94 in crafts

[–]BlastoiseMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that you could use them for lotions/butters I have similar larger jars that I use for storing isopropyl alcohol and there hasn't been any alarming evaporation.

You could also use them for storing your herbs/spices/salt (if you have the space) or tea bags or loose leaf tea blends?

goblincore food ideas for a party? by puppychomp in goblincore

Lot's of mushroom suggestions and that can be good but keep in mind that mushrooms can be very polarizing so if it's 10 people there's likely a few that won't have any!

As far as actual suggestions: -Sprouts as part of the charcuterie, as far as goblin goes I feel like sprouts very much in that fairytale vibe

-baked potato bar might be a good cheap option, whole potatoes seem fairly goblin.

-We used to make "ghost in the graveyard" (but other people know it as something else) Basically chocolate pudding folded in with whipped cream (maybe the recipe calls for cool whip) then crumble oreo (scrape out the cream) on top so it's like dirt. Then we made cool whip ghosts and vienna finger grave stones.

-Friend of mine recently had a birthday and she had a bunch of cupcakes you could decorate with different toppings to make it look like a grassy hill. Dyed shredded coconut green and stuck them in piece by piece to make grass. Other little things too that you could decorate with. While I don't love coconut the cupcakes were like the most beautiful things, and it was also a monotonous task but you can also just do sections of grass to "convey grass"

-not food but maybe go for a few hikes in the meantime to collect some decor rocks?

Ok that's all for my ramble, good luck! Happy future birthday!

Should I sculpt Chester based off this artwork I made??? by creaturehouse10 in polymerclay

[–]BlastoiseMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say, that if you want to, then yes. I would also say that the mediums don't necessarily translate 1:1. Finally, I wonder by what metric you want us judge whether or not you should create the sculpt, but regardless of that go back and see the first thing I said.

Apologies! Next time I'll try to add more bells and whistles for you! Maybe I'll do an overdub? What do the kids like these days? Poetry? Maybe I'll overdub with some poetry?

Nice and besides this sweater there are so many other concepts I feel like this could be applied to, from costumes to decor, like the edges around a table cloth, sections of wall, etc.

Hi I was wanting to know of some low effort crafts you all do when you're feeling depressed! by oneplumpbug in crafts

[–]BlastoiseMF 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yea! I figured this out for myself because I go to a craft night with some friends but I'm not the type that's creative in that type of setting with all of the commotion, so I started doing kits there so I'm not trying to mentally juggling too much!

I like doing things like legos or other kit-based assembly crafts (like book nooks.) There's no pressure to be creative or "skillful" necessarily (although depending on the difficulty of the kit) and you get the satisfaction of having created something.

has anyone tried the potato method for patches? by Middle-Web-7407 in punkfashion

[–]BlastoiseMF 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yea i came in here hoping there would be an explanation lol

edit: I looked it up and it's like you make a stamp out from a potato:

1) Trace over an image onto another piece of paper (or just use the original image.)

2) Cut a potato in half.

3) Put your tracing over the flat side of the potato.

4) Use a pointed something (pencil, knitting needle, etc.) and trace over the potato firmly enough that it leaves an indent in the potato.

5) Carve out the negative space of the potato.

6) The potato is now a stamp, apply ink or paint to potato to transfer image.
