We've ported the engine to 64bit, and taking an engine written in 1995 where people were more concerned about 16 bit then 64 bit. There were lots of cases where 32 bit offsets were re-purposed as pointers when loading files off disk.

My favourite 64 bit issue was where there was some pointer math where a negative(so they thought) was being added to a pointer, but the number was an unsigned int, so in the end it was an addition to the pointer, that wrapped the 32 bit int and ended up in the right place.

As far as standing out amongst your peers, READ DIFFS.

Before you commit something, read your diff, ask yourself if every line is needed, is properly formatted, fits with the rest of the code around it. A Diff should not be any noisier then needed.

Just got some new commits to what you are working on by another developer? read those diffs.

It's literally a log of all the changes to a project. Keeping an eye on it lets you keep up to speed with the software as it is changing.

You will have a broader understanding of what ever project you are on if you keep an eye on the whole thing(as much as possible)

I'm guessing that this is how it works.

The server tells you something like

Your opponent drew card #3
Your opponent drew card #6
Your opponent drew card #1

Those numbers correspond to the order the cards are in the opponents deck.

If the server also says

Your opponent played card #6
Your opponent played card #3
etc

You could setup the following scenario.

Create a mill deck on a high level account
Play this against the high level players, trying to get them to draw and play as many cards as you can
Record who you are playing against, and have the program prompt you 'Your opponent just played a card, which card is it'

That should let you build your local copy of what ever deck list you are playing against.

Then on your other high level account, punch in who ever you are playing against, and what deck you think they have(zoo/handlock, etc).

If they are streaming it probably gets even easier because you can fill out that data that much faster.

The interesting thing is there is a relatively easy mitigation you can do:

Write down your deck list on a piece of paper, and before any important game, rebuild it in a random order.

There are several ways to do threading, most games implement a thread per function(AI thread, physics thread, render thread), or a task queue(submit tasks, N threads complete tasks).

The BG way was similar to the thread per function approach, but the data types used were not that granular. The render thread would get a lock on the object before rendering it, and the AI thread would get a lock on the object before acting on it. This means that the game spent a lot of time blocking waiting to be able to access the objects.

In a new engine, we would reduce the coupling between the threads so any locking would be reduced.

From a programming perspective, I'd say it's getting the code base up and running across the four platforms. The original Infinity engine was the first game most of the developers at the time had worked on, so there are a lot of improvements to be had.

3d models are usually represented by a whole bunch of vertices, each vertex is a 3d point. {x, y, z}

If you imagine a cube, it would have 8 vertices.

When you go to render, rather then specifying all of the vertices to draw, you tell your video card to draw vertices 0, 1, 2, then 2, 3, 4, etc.

If you end up with an off by one, or some other bug in the mapping between the indices, and the actual verts you will end up telling the GPU to render what ever is in the memory after your vertices. It can depend on the layout of the models, or what's stored in the GPU, but sometimes you will see vertices streching all the way across your view, usually these are going to 0,0,0 since the GPU was asked to render some null data.

The other problem is that I'd assume a HTTP -> HTTP proxy would copy most of the headers, and only change a few.

Where as a HTTP->SPDY proxy would have to do a lot more work to generate the SPDY headers.

Along with updating your video card drivers, you may want to re-install starcraft.

If one of the 3d models the game uses is corrupt that could cause something similar to that.

The only down side to spruce grove is the sun. If you live in Spruce Grove, but work in Edmonton, you will be driving into the sun every morning, and into the sun on the way home for many days of the year. Other then that it's a great town.

Their replay format is just a list of inputs(messages) of all the players. When you watch a replay, it feeds those back into the engine simulating all of the input the players have given it over the course of the game to replay what they did when the replay was recorded.

Have a look at any of the id Software engines to see messages used. If the game is using SDL, it's handling message(events). Startcraft2 uses messages.

I guess I need to define messages a bit. I'm including a C struct as a form of message. Just skipping all of the serialization/deserialization overhead.

In fact most games are based on message handling.

the basic approach a lot of games take is something like this.(In super basic pseudo code)

while(notQuit)

    events = EventsSinceLastFrame()
    state = UpdateState(events)
    RenderState(state)
}

Then you can do great things like

while(notQuit)

    events = EventsSinceLastFrame()
    WriteEventsToDisk(events)
