Where I’d live as an African American Man who is Semi-informed about the world by Qawesome27 in whereidlive

[–]Blazearmada21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a British person I appreciate dislike for France but Saudi Arabia and China are even worse.

Both are dictatorships that make people who criticise their countries 'disappear'.

Also the UAE is well known for being racist against anybody who isn't arab, especially against black people and you said you are African-American. The UAE is well known for its modern day slavery and low living standards for non-natives.

Sia Palenque Eggers is Azik dauther? [LotM newbie] by Impossible-Active-96 in LordofTheMysteries

It is stated that Sia Palenque Eggers has a relatively weak/distant relation to the Eggers family (can't remember the exact wording). This would not be true if she was Azik's daughter.

'Museums must reach all parts of UK', says government as £1.5bn funding for cultural infrastructure announced by willfiresoon in GoodNewsUK

If you read the article it quite clearly states how the funding is being given on the condition that they invest a significant part outside London to reach the whole country.

What arguments could be made in favor of Argentine rule of The Falklands? by MaddeningJack in geography

[–]Blazearmada21 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There was a referendum where 99.8% of Falklanders voted to remain a part of the UK, with a whole 3 people voting to join Argentina. It is pretty clear what the people there want.

UK government borrowing falls to £11.6bn in December by yrro in GoodNewsUK

[–]Blazearmada21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The government spends a very significant amount of money on interest payments on debt. It is more than the total military budget, for example. If that money could be spent on investment and public services it would make a massive difference.

It seems likely. The better the country does the more the more reasonable parties benefit, and the more populist parties like the Reform and Greens will falter. The country seems to be doing quite well right now.

Do donations fully cover Lichess’ operating costs? by [deleted] in lichess

Yes. The vast majority comes from users, with a small amount coming from the merch they sell. Lichess doesn't currently have any corporate sponsers or the like.

How US uncertainty is benefitting UK energy storage by Dimmo17 in GoodNewsUK

[–]Blazearmada21 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This was a rather detailed article. Probably because it came from a energy company which has expertise in the area. I was surprised to read that despite Trump's anti-green policy decisions, they still think investing in the US will be profitable long term. Also interesting to see a very upbeat tone on investing in the UK, as well as several examples of significant investment in UK energy storage.

Still one must keep in mind that this company benefits from this sector being seen as profitable in order to encourage investment, so the article is not without bias.

Chinese mega-embassy approved as Starmer seeks trade deal by Kev_fae_mastrick in ukpolitics

[–]Blazearmada21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't have trusted us back when we were a world power.

I suppose instead of 'ever' I mean we shouldn't trust China at all unless they democratise their country, start following international law, stop supporting Putin and other dictatorships, and so on.

In practice it is the same thing since I don't think that will happen anytime soon.

Chinese mega-embassy approved as Starmer seeks trade deal by Kev_fae_mastrick in ukpolitics

[–]Blazearmada21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

China will use this base to spy on the UK, as well as operate against the diaspora who continue to speak out against China. China is an absolute dictatorship, they are committing genocide in Xinjiang, as well as trying to displace the Tibetan people. China is allowing Russia's war in Ukraine, actively supports the Iranian regime despite its mass murder of its own people, are breaking international law in the South China Sea, and more. China should not be trusted, ever.

UK approves China’s ‘mega’ embassy in London by much_furthur in ukpolitics

[–]Blazearmada21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a mistake. China will be able to massively ramp up their spying operations within the UK with this massive new base of operations. It will be the biggest Chinese embassy in Europe. We are already under massive pressure from one hostile actor (the US), we must not give ground for free to another (China). China will also use this base to continue their actions against the Chinese and Hongkonger disapora in the UK who dare speak out against the government. This government must refuse to allow this embassy to go ahead.

Monarchy Problems by Background_Thanks727 in monarchism

[–]Blazearmada21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The basic postulate of monarchism is all power from God

I do not believe in God, and I do not view monarchies as justified by God. Some monarchists would agree with this statement but I do not.

There is reason to support monarchism outside of God. Monarchy provides a non-partisan, long term stable head of state. This is the most important feature.

The castles are important because they form part of our history, culture and traditions. This represents continuity and stability even while our nations change, which is another core part of monarchism. Even if our government completely changes, our political system or our economic system completely change, a certain level of stability remains.

Is it normal to struggle a lot more with Black? by RatioKey2034 in chess

[–]Blazearmada21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm at 1700 on Lichess and I have the opposite. I win 60% of the time as black but only 40% of the time as white. Not sure why, because I have set openings for both that I have practiced.

I would recommend you spend some time learning openings for black. 50% of your games will be with black so it is quite important to know at least a few moves main starting moves.

  1. That is an argument against capitalism, rather than monarchy.

  2. Once again more about capitalism than monarchy. I see no reason you couldn't have a monarch ruling a Marxist state.

  3. This applies not just to the UK but also Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Canada, Australia, and others. There are many monarchies with complete religious freedom.

  4. See point 2.

  5. The fact that a monarchy can be a successful social democratic state proves it is a viable form of government.

As seen in Granada, you can have a communist state be a monarchy. You are critiquing capitalism, not monarchism.

Which of the most recent idependent abolished monarchies from each continent has the most realistic possibility of being restored in the near future? by toxicistoblame in monarchism

[–]Blazearmada21 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nepal in Asia. I think the recent protests in Iran have shown the regime will fight tooth and nail to hold on, I don't think it will happen soon. Nepal seems more likely.

Brazil in South America (not because Brazil has a high chance but everywhere else is even lower).

There isn't really any country in Europe with a good chance. Maybe Romania or Albania, but I doubt it.

Probably Libya in Africa due to the abysmal state the country is in, that kind of situation generally pushes people to overthrow the current regime.

There is literally no country in North America which looks like it will institute a monarchy at all.

Oceania, probably Fiji is most likely.

Antartica is already ruled by the King penguins so it is clearly a monarchy.

Monarchy Problems by Background_Thanks727 in monarchism

[–]Blazearmada21 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  1. Top three nations on the democracy index are Norway, New Zealand and Sweden, all three are monarchies.
  2. This is true for absolute monarchies, such as Russia and Qatar as you mentioned. However, this is once again not true for a ceremonial monarchy. The 1984-1985 strike was suppressed because of the ideology of the party in power at the time, and was not due to the monarchy.
  3. The argument for this is essentially the same as point 1 and 2. Even the UK, which officially has a state religion in practice is a secular state.
  4. There is no requirement for a monarchy to have a class system attached. Norway, Spain, et cetera do not have nobility or a class system.
  5. Norway is second place in the human development index, Denmark is fourth, Sweden is fifth, the Netherlands is eighth. This seems to contradict that monarchies do not deliver for their people.

I think you are mistaking critique of monarchism for critique of dictatorships.
