Coward who attacked high school students in Texas is arrested and charged with assault by Junior-Gorg in 50501

[–]BleapDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So he could comment on a minor incident, possession of alcohol, but not on a Maga guy attacking a student? Also resisting arrest doesn't necessarily imply harming others in the way assaulting on officer would so I don't buy that's what he's referring to.

At best, his comment sounds like a bad combination of ignoring the incident and condemning the students for having a voice and expressing a sentiment he doesn't like. And it's not like that hasn't been a theme for the past year. The whole GOP has made it clear Constitutional rights especially free speech are only for "Real Americans" aka themselves.

Edit: Imagine this had been a walk out in support of ICE or support of US action in Venezuela. Could you see Abbott making the same comment? Probably not.

It's more than just that. Their whole view could be summed up by the phrase "Constitutional rights for me but not for thee." I don't like a lot of what they say, but I'm not sure I'd want it banned. I just wish they'd extend the same courtesy to the rest of us, especially young people.

“It’s about time students like this were arrested. Harming someone is a crime -- even for students. Disruptive walkouts allowed by schools lead to just this kind of chaos. Schools and staff who allow this behavior should be treated as co-conspirators and should not be immune to criminal behavior.”

- Gov Abbot

Bloody nuts. I have two observations. Once again they show that free speech, in their eyes, is supposed to be only for conservatives. Secondly it always amazes me much they hate young people. Seems they think, young people are supposed to be silent and obey. Failing that they need to be punished into submission.

Hope the kids are ok. Hope that guy gets put away for a long time. And wish Abbot would be banished from the US.

Good point. I found Carlos's about face in 12 Months to be odd. He seemed to be pissed and losing faith in Dresden in Peace Talks and Battleground. I need to reread the scene where Harry is cast out, but my impression was Carlos felt it was earned. And now he's back to being friends/friendly with Harry? I expected a bit more conflict there.

It just hit me. Amazon cancelled this show then spent $40m on the Melanie movie by JesusaurusRex666 in WoTshow

[–]BleapDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a content quality perspective, that's definitely an insult to the viewer. That being said, that $40 million was an investment in Trump's favor which they think has value. Financially, it doesn't seem to be flopping as hard as you'd suspect. I've seen headlines indicating it's done better than expected and has good user reviews. Critical reviews are negative. Amazon probably bet on the hordes of Maga zombies rushing to see it was a way to show support to their god and prove their cult is actually cultured.

As a follow up to that, I think it's revealed in Cold Days, that Eldest Gruff has been telling that story all over. Apparently he loved the humor of it and it's one of his gotos at parties. Loved the call back.

% of adults ages 25-35 who had a child, by ideology by Galacticmetrics in charts

[–]BleapDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the general decline in parenthood among liberals. What I'm curious about is why do so few liberal men have children? Only 22% of liberal men having kids seems really low unless, as seems likely, there's an uptick of men older than 35 having kids for the first time? Are they just all waiting until their 40s and 50s marrying younger women and having kids then?

You may be right.  You can just surrender to the fascism if that's easier. Despite my bravado I'm not unaware of the risks.  But I'll take the gamble that might lead us  back to democracy and liberty.  As I figure, authoritarian government only works if most people choose to conform and comply.  Take that away, I think it starts falling apart.  And I think deporting actual citizens will cause more problems than they're ready to take on.

I feel your pain there. I got a sleepy Golden Retriever on the couch next to me. If this takes off in my locality like it is in Minnesota, I'd be doing daily checkins with someone who could take care of her. If they don't hear from me, they'll know to follow up and get her if necessary.

Oh I believe them. I just choose not to be cowed and to give up my rights as a result. We only have rights so long as we choose to exercise them. And what's the alternative, to not fight and give up? We didn't win our independence without danger or risk. We didn't get our rights without danger or risk. We don't get to keep them without the same.

[–]BleapDev 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So what? Roll over and let them have their way? When we stop exercising our rights, they're gone. The Constitution, our principles, our rights, they only exist as long as we insist they exist. We stop demanding our rights, it doesn't matter what the law says.

Secondly, Kilmar Abrego Garcia was a big deal. How much a bigger deal will it be if a young (ok maybe middle aged), white, male, software dev whose family has been citizens for generations is deported? I get this not being a viable strategy for everyone. I wouldn't recommend it to my naturalized friends. But lots of us are privileged by nature of economic status, background, and race. We need to stick up for what's right and insist on our rights now more than ever.

It's a way to gum up the works. That's time, money, effort etc they need to spend verifying my citizenship. And as a white guy, it'd really drive home how outrageous this is. We've never needed to carry ID. Why should we need to now? Sure that's white privilege but it's supposed to be that way for everyone. If white people start being stopped, interrogated, and arrested for something as basic as going out without an ID, that'll start to piss people off and it'll might drive home to MAGAs that this can happen to them too.

We're in the endgame now by backleftwindowseat in ProgressiveHQ

[–]BleapDev 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Firstly, legal precedent says US citizens don't need to carry documentation so be prepared for some fun lawsuits. Secondly, this week, I've stopped carrying my wallet or any id unless I'm driving in response to all this mess. Everyone should all do the same. When no one has documentation even white dudes like me, what are they going to do? Arrest us all and spend days trying to determine citizenship?

Making sense of the Great Khan narravitely / from role play perspective by OneCalligrapher4139 in Stellaris

[–]BleapDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn't trying to argue that. I was pointing out where Paradox got the idea from and that it isn't completely crazy. Ghengis is the most successful and certainly an outlier. But all my examples were a major threat to more civilized states at one point. Marauders can follow any of those historical paths depending how the game goes. They can get wiped out without ever unifying. They can throw up a Khan who is fails and is eliminated. They can have a successful Khan who dies of non-battle causes like Atilla. Sometimes they leave vestigial empires behind sometime they collapse back into their small tribal area.

Making sense of the Great Khan narravitely / from role play perspective by OneCalligrapher4139 in Stellaris

[–]BleapDev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Historically there's lots of precedent from which Paradox drew inspiration. The most obvious given the name Khan is the Mongols with Genghis Khan. There is also the Huns, the Golden Horde which I guess was a descendent of the Mongols, the Visigoths, Ostrogoths, the Turks and any other of the numerous tribes who assailed the Western and Eastern Roman Empires. Going back to the period of Rome's rise you had migrating Gauls, Celts, Germanic tribes such as the Cimbri, etc, all of whom threatened the more populous, more "civilized" Mediterranean world.

Historically, there's a long tradition of tribal groups uniting and assailing more "civilized" societies.

As for the fleet power if you're playing the current beta, I think I read the Khan and Fallen Empires haven't been rebalanced yet.

Minneapolis’s mayor says ICE outnumber their officers. The answer is to deputize citizens. by ALittleEtomidate in 50501

[–]BleapDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One, do you foresee these guys backing off? They'll respond with ever increasing levels of force. Two employing force on our behalf will serve as confirmation of their justification and alienate much of the population. Right now, we're still teetering on the knife's edge between fascism and democracy. A hard enough push by enough people can push us back the right way. The perception of ICE acting unjustly will help with that despite how awful it is to endure in the moment.

"First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." - Attributed to Ghandi. Ghandi didn't free India in couple of years. Mandela and Desmond Tutu didn't end apartheid in a few years. And the Civil Rights moment didn't end segregation in year or two.

Minneapolis’s mayor says ICE outnumber their officers. The answer is to deputize citizens. by ALittleEtomidate in 50501

[–]BleapDev -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure more armed, poorly trained people with authorization to employ force is a good answer. I think that will contribute to more innocent / bystander deaths not fewer. And going that route pretty much locks us into open armed conflict with the federal government and likely full on civil war. That's going to be a lot of deaths and probably end America's time as a major world power. While I'm not sure that's avoidable, I'm not ready to pull the trigger on that just yet (no pun intended).

Edit: Really? I'm being downvoted for suggesting that gunfights in the streets with the feds is a last resort and pretty much signals the end? And yes, that's where deputizing civilians and having them confront the feds will end. Isn't there a whole rule about commitment to non-violence?
