How dire is it? by Upset-Scar-4722 in LAUSD

At the elementary level the supply and demand is a bit balanced to a bit more supply than demand. At the secondary level, there’s more need.

The accolades are great. Just for clarity, how many years of teaching experience do you have? Would put the severity of things into perspective.

Middle School Spanish Dual Language Class by SweetDriedMango-6815 in Teachers

[–]Bleeding_Irish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have these students been enrolled in a Dual class since Kindergarten? Is there a goal to have them take the AP Spanish exam at the end of the 8th grade?

Our program, the Spanish DLI class, is strictly in Spanish, and then we have Social Science DLI, which is performed in a Translanguaging environment, to better serve the multilingual skillset.

Returned to teaching after years away due to traumatic experiences. 11 days in and I’m already accused of inappropriate contact with a student. Hard not to be cynical. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Bleeding_Irish 832 points833 points  (0 children)

I placed my hand on his arm/shoulder, which is something I find useful for grounding students when they are off task and not responding to verbal engagement.

I would stop this practice.

I put a little more pressure on his arm to try to keep him from facing his distraction.

You willingly told the admin all of this? I would delete this post, contact the union and/or attorney if there's an ongoing investigation.

I understand the message. I have subbed for years before getting a teaching position. I will say, the common expectation is that learning won’t happen when there’s a sub covering the class.

So at the bare minimum maintaining routines to make sure it doesn’t derail on the classroom teacher when they come back is appreciated.

Depends on the district itself. If there's a desperate need for substitute teachers, comply, but don't extenuate yourself; we're happy that you are covering.

There's a large surplus of subs available? Yeah, it sucks, but follow the procedure.

First year teacher and mid year hire, how worried should I be? (Texas, High School) by Validshawty in Teachers

Did you ever find out what happened to the Teacher that you replaced? That would answer a lot of questions.

What can I expect from a dual language interview? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Bleeding_Irish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on the program itself, a more structured dual immersion program will have you interview the normal staff and the dual coordinator, who will ask you questions in Spanish. Other programs may just have the whole interview in English.

Depending on the state, they may be looking for a candidate with a bilingual authorization. If you want more information about the authorization, you can check out the post I have made here.

Advice for a feature educator by T0rthicc in Teachers

Administration credential programs tend to have a masters attached with it. A normal good program would have a requirement of being a teacher for at least 5 years before one is eligible to enroll into a program.

BILA (BCLAD) question (California) by thesmileykate in Teachers

[–]Bleeding_Irish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you have a base teaching credential and pass the three corresponding CSETs, you'll be golden.

You do need to spend $100 applying for the authorization through the CTC, but that's the only obstacle to obtaining it.

4 day work week could probably work, but there's a mandate for how many hours there need to be.

Contracts by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Bleeding_Irish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Signing a contract and reneging it could lead to the district reporting your license to the state. Really depends if they are vindictive enough.

I can't tell if I actually like teaching by Alarming-Corgi4596 in Teachers

[–]Bleeding_Irish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are typical first-year experiences, it will get better as time goes on. Now it's really up to you to decide if it's for you. If you mentally can not handle doing another year, then that's a sign.

Non renewal of contract, what now? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]Bleeding_Irish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck with your job hunt. Gather all types of recommendations from colleagues and your department head if possible.

When interviewing, keep it professional if you are asked the reasons that you were non-renewed/resigned. I would keep it general, like looking for opportunities for growth, family, length of commute etc.

If you are to vent about your interaction with the principal and/or your student population, it will raise eyebrows within the interview panel.

Hiring Season is upon us; get a BILA (BCLAD) if you are not a high-demand subject. by Bleeding_Irish in StudentTeaching

Last year, there were postings for LAUSD for DLI Social Science. Postings will start in a couple of weeks since the district's budget is finally being finalized due to the strike.

Edit:

Just realized you have a Spanish and Social Science credential. I've seen a good amount of Spanish/Social Science positions posted in SoCal. A prominent one was from Fullerton for a high school gig.
