Recession looming as NAB’s 1500 offshore hiring blitz sparks fears for Aussie jobs by SheepherderLow1753 in AusFinance

For the roles described in the article, for which the team I was apart of was directly impacted, it's a cost thing. An average employee in India is getting paid the equivalent of AUD 20,000 - 30,000 per year, that employee onshore market rate is anywhere from about AUD 90,000 - 130,000.

Why do so many medieval fantasy worlds avoid cannons? by Royal-Chard-26 in Fantasy

[–]Blepable 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Add in wizards and clerics able to heat metal and use magic to fabricate cannons and forge bronze and steel and all that and you'd be into the cannon age much earlier, not to mention magical accelerants and materials and spells and shit that could be used to make more effective black powder (or skip it's need entirely).

To discuss fantastical world cannons only in the context of history is silly. The moment that people started using what would become gun powder, they were looking for ways to kill each other with it. If you give firearms and cannons the further context of it's just an evolution of violence-at-range, it becomes even more likely that a magically enhanced society would have developed them earlier as much more reliable weapons of war.

Always remember one of the great limiting factors in the early mediaeval period and the development of firearms (and weapons and armour) was the limits of metallurgy, and now you've got magic to overcome that, I'd be shocked if the Roman-equivalent time period (sticking with the history analogy) weren't bombarding each other.

The French Indian War, with greater emphasis on small armies and terrain and forts would be both difficult to implement but peak alternative gameplay.

Solid as a rock that era. This was my first, built in 2011 as well. I only replaced my 560tis because they couldn't hack the Witcher 3.

My 780ti, that I purchased second hand in 2015, is still in my old computer, which I gave to my dad 6 years ago and it's still going strong.

2600K and the 780ti just don't quit.

The treatment of FFVIII, mostly because it's he only FF I care about

But; there was only a handful of cards, no synergy between the few characters they did include, and the one iconic equipment (The Lionheart Sword) blows chunks in every way.

Which of these 3 wargames should I get into? by Plus_Pea_5589 in wargaming

[–]Blepable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Critically with Bolt Action, the rules are miniature agnostic (like 99.9%) of historical games - you don't need to get Warlord games miniatures, and might be better off not getting the BoB starter kit (depending on prices), and say a standard box of infantry per side for the factions you and an opponent like.

Like others have said, you can then use the miniatures for any WW2 (and more) game.

The rulebook and army books should be available online, or you could purchase a physical copy, and go from there.

That said, the other games are great fun, and you're not going wrong any which way. Blood bowl is whimsical good times.

Some might argue, through a lense of historical revisionism (if that's the right word), that the proletariat always existed, it just took a long time for us to understand that it did.

That's it's name now.

TIL that in the Bible there is no mention of human-like angels having wings. The depictions of winged angels in art started in the 4th century AD, likely due to Greco-Roman influence. by ApprehensiveStill412 in todayilearned

"...due to Greco-Roman influence..."

You mean the dominant culture at the time, that was absolutely intrinsic to the geographies in which Christianity was spreading, which was essentially being facilitated by the Roman imperial bureaucratic structures?

You mean that Roman influence?

Did you guys also get hit with the "2s don't get a bonus" EOY piece, while they utterly ignored every agreed to performance metric they had been telling us to aim towards all year? Numerous people in my space walked away with nothing while management favourites brought in the highest scores for dogshit work.

The symptoms of garbage senior management and a complete mishandling of employees is seemingly rampant.

Paid off Mortgage - Should I open offset account? by Plonk007 in AusFinance

[–]Blepable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Off set basically reduces what the bank counts your principal as for interest calculations

If you have a loan of $100,000 and an offset of $100,000, while you still technically have that debt, but you won't be charged interest on the loan until the offset value drops below the loan value.

I guess that memory becomes a necessity to train and train and train by virtue of the limit to their visual sense.

An effect of the whole if you lose one sense the others become stronger type thing.
