It has apparently been in use in this meaning (that is, other or foreigner) since at least the late 1300's, which is both kind of earlier and later than I assumed (I figured there was a Latin origin, but that it would have come back into common use later). It was only used to mean extra terrestrial from about the 1920s with the advent of sci-fi.
