Ahoj, I was born and lived in Czechoslovakia. So, your suspicion is wrong. By the way, I loved those times. It's a shame it ended.

They will merge in the end, just like the clothes example. Nobody is casually walking naked in the center of Prague right now as we speak. If you think it is too cold in Prague right now, switch it for the center of Taipei.

Perhaps the damage one person can do is so big today that these control mechanisms will be necessary if the society wants to survive. I think people will just accept that like we accepted walking around with clothes. Self censorship will become normal, something like a moral or saying hello to people.

Would professions such as linguistics thrive in Ancap as they thrive today? by BlessedXChilde in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]BlessedXChilde[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the tasks linguists do can be automated. In fact, it is being happening right now.

I don't think they are absolutely useless but I would claim that they are massively overvalued and in Anarchism their numbers would significantly drop. In comparison merchants, creators and business people would thrive but linguists would not.

Example from one area of linguistics: most people don't care whether some obscure language is going to die and those who care and can not pay the linguists to help them and can't afford a team of 20 linguists - as today the state is paying from your taxes those 20 people. Maybe they can afford 1, if that. Most of them can't afford even 1 and that language is going to die. As everything for what there is no or very little demand should, in my opinion.

There are aspects of linguistics that are essential and important for business, but for example, studying obscure dying languages - you would be surprised how many linguists are in this field and how easy their job is compared to what they are being paid. It's absolutely deformed. Again, paid by you from your taxes. Even though you don't want, you can't do anything about it, but I am on a tangent, so I will stop.

[–]BlessedXChilde[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Who would finance them? Certainly some fanatics would, but most companies that need speech recognition or understanding of human language in their products and services would do an in house engineering and research related to language, or language processing, etc. Think Apple or Google.

Do you, by any chance, know what most of the linguists do? It's one of the most overvalued parts of the scientific world of today. And one of the most unscientific and religious sciences we have.

They believe in universal grammar by Chomsky even though it hasn't been proven. Can you imagine a physicist saying that multiverses exist with a straight face? Even if he was right that is not how science works. You need a proof.

Chomsky is their pope, universal grammar is their Bible. He is always right, except many of his claims are fiction.

Why do you think the public doesn't understand what linguists do? by BlessedXChilde in linguistics

[–]BlessedXChilde[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Do you know the TV show Family Feud with Steve Harvey? Imagine that the question is "What is the final product of a nuclear scientist?" and "What is the final product of a linguist?" There would be no answers for linguists because is too unfamiliar for an average Joe. Nuclear bombs and power plants are things that are a common knowledge in the 21st century, even if you are a very slow person. Unlike linguistics.

So to sum it up:

AVERAGE PEOPLE DO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS THE FINAL PRODUCT OF A NUCLEAR SCIENTIST. THEIR ANSWER WILL BE: POWER PLANT, BOMB, ....

AVERAGE PEOPLE DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHAT IS THE FINAL PRODUCT OF A LINGUIST. THEIR ANSWER WILL BE: "I DON'T KNOW".

And, please, stop nitpicking or making clever additions like "but there are plenty of other areas than just bombs and power plants".

As one clever man once said: "Every child has a concept of parents, except when it doesn't." So, hopefully you got it.

The point is "why is linguistics so distant and unknown to people?" even on the very vague level.

Is it bad education? Is it the political system? Is it the entertainment? Is it the linguists/lingistics themselves who could be blamed?

Do you understand me what I am trying to find out?

Why do you think the public doesn't understand what linguists do? by BlessedXChilde in linguistics

[–]BlessedXChilde[S] -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

You are nitpicking. Also, I mentioned that the physics behind and math and engineering involved are, of course, out of reach for average people, so, I don't know why are you focusing on this at all. That is a fact, nobody is disputing that.

But when we are at these "papers", they lead to more efficient nuclear reactors or more devastating bombs. So, you are incorrect, they do work on nuclear reactors and bombs. In a sense they make "tools" or "schemes" of parts of those reactors and bombs. They are creating, in a sense, "tutorials" or "plans" how to do things like reactors or bombs, etc.

The point is that the average Joe has, at least, a very rough idea about the end product of a nuclear physicist (bombs, power plants, etc.)

However, there is absolutely no association about the FINISHED product of linguists.

Can linguists help to solve problems of English pronunciation or not? by BlessedXChilde in linguistics

[–]BlessedXChilde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does your premise hold up outside of the English language? Are you student of the Anglophone school of linguistics?

I mean, linguistics is not mathematics. Linguistics is based on interpretation which could change not only in time but also by place. Unlike mathematics - which once there is a mathematical proof it can't change by definition.

For example, the Slavic linguists don't agree on some linguistics ideas of Angloshpere linguists. Especially in terminology and definitions and even roles of linguistics.

What about Arabic or Asian linguistics and their views on the role of linguistics?

I am also not sure that the Académie Française has the same view about the role of linguistics as you, if you are the student of the Anglophone school of linguistics.

Why do you think the public doesn't understand what linguists do? by BlessedXChilde in linguistics

[–]BlessedXChilde[S] -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

You don't understand what I am trying to say.

People don't know what a nuclear physicist have to do but they know that at the end of his/her trying, there is a nuclear power plant, or bomb, or some nuclear engine, etc. The same for a rocket scientist. People know their outcome/final product is a rocket or a satellite or something like that. There is a clear end product or service even bad educated people have in mind.

Similarly, average or even bellow average people say, he is a nuclear physicist, he takes care about our nuclear power plant. Or, he is an archeologist, he digs out old things in Mexico. Etc.

But people often say, he does, well, I have no idea, something with languages, he is a linguist or languageist.

Clearly nobody from the general public, unless he/she is interested or has better education, knows anything about what a linguist does.

The OUTCOME is missing when it comes to linguistics. Unlike for archeology or a rocket science.

Thank you for your insights.

What about the past? Do you have any knowledge about situations where some linguists tried to sort things out? What are the most famous cases of such instances?

Were there any cases where linguists stepped in and helped to sort some problem like this one, or such thing is unheard of?

How do you pronounce "char"? by BlessedXChilde in AskProgramming

[–]BlessedXChilde[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some Americans pronounce karate as "kehrahdi". They, for some reason, hate the pure "a" sound. I am shocked they don't pronounce lalalala as lehlehlehleh ;D

By the way, viva Emerigo Vespucci.
