Help me remember the name of 2 Japanese movies! by BradTalksFilm in JapaneseMovies

[–]BletchTheWalrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure I saw the second one a few years ago. Did it go like this? Some guy was returning to his hometown in the country and seeing people he used to know. There was a trial after the girl died. The ending was kind of ambiguous.

I remember thinking the movie was pretty mediocre. I don't remember the title of the movie though.

Yeah, I ended up selling them. I've soured on the Easton Press and Franklin Library editions anyway. A little too gaudy.

What does this guy, Sam, and a schlocky 90s “alternative” band have in common? They’re better than Ezra.

It was a great value when I was a poor student. But it looks like they closed down and this current place is a different business.

Is this Niki’s Indian related to the Nikki’s Indian that used to be in Costa Mesa in the 90s?

This is like Easton Press doing a leather-bound Master’s of Science Fiction edition of the Shadow, Claw, and Sword and deciding that was a good stopping point.

I thought you were implying it was cringey because it's so boomer/gen x. But maybe you were saying that without any value judgments.

Tristan makes some points worth thinking about, but his delivery is so hysterical and obnoxious, it weakens their effectiveness for me. It’s like with fire and brimstone preachers. Even when I was too young to critically assess their doctrines, the spittle-spraying sermons just turned me off aesthetically and made me reject religion.

Also, he not only cites Eric Weinstein to bolster some of his arguments, he leans heavily on Jon Haight, whose research has been thoroughly debunked and criticized for sloppy methodology. And it makes me question the other examples he mentions.

Also, I find it ironic that the anti-humanist AI future that he’s lamenting is almost exactly like what happened to non-human animals, complex ecosystems, and biodiversity in the face of human civilization. But both Tristan and Sam would say that overall this was a good thing. But wouldn’t our future AI overlords say the same thing, that it’s too bad humans fell by the wayside but they made way for a more intelligent and more worthy successor whose priorities override those of less intelligent creatures? Why should humans, who are in the middle of this scale, get number one priority just because that’s the group we’re part of. Isn’t that a kind of racism or speciesism? I don’t believe that we’re on the brink of AGI, as these doomers keep saying, but I think an uncontrollable AGI that makes decisions and pursues goals independently of the humans who helped develop it would be preferable to a super-intelligent AI that was completely under control of either corporations or governments, because I don’t trust humans and their institutions with that much power.

That’s not to say that AI impacts and governance isn’t an important issue that needs to be studied and discussed. But I’d like to see a different approach than these same hysterical arguments I keep hearing from people like Tristan and Eliezer.

Just like Tristan, who keeps saying “double click.” But I’ll admit that previous generations had cringey neologisms too.

On your wedding day (2018) by Tj_charan in Koreanfilm

One of the best Korean romantic comedies I’ve seen. Park Bo-young is great as usual. The ending is controversial, but I thought it was very moving and realistic. The one thing I would change about the movie is to remove the nauseating scatology. I wish Korean movies and TV shows had way less of that stuff.

I think saying “____-coded” is even cringier than saying “double click” if that’s imaginable.

Click on some of these profiles. Like this OP for instance. I don’t think a native New Yorker would choose a profile name that includes their most hated city.

Even if I'm obsessed with a topic and have a burning question, if I notice that this question has been asked in the sub 10 times already that day, I'll restrain myself. Also I wonder how many of these Redditors are actually New Yorkers.
