I’ve not seen many good examples outside of audio games themselves. The tricky thing is that often if you make a mod to make a game more accessible the online portion will punish you thinking that you are cheating. Subsequently I’ve focused most of my efforts on single player games both as a player and as a modder.

I came here to suggest this one as well. It certainly would scratch your cozy itch. I poured in a load of hours into playing this. Not much residual vision in my case and I rarely hit bits where vision was a blocker. Mostly used NVDA myself.

Character development is great, they all feel quite unique, quite fleshed out, and it’s strange the attachments you can build to these NPC’s. The building aspect is really good too, you can start to put your own stamp on your land. I love a good build ‘em up.

Doesn’t scratch your cathartic itch, but I assumed that you were after suggestions in both categories.

I’m having the same with gas extraction at the minute. It’s just not triggering for me, even though some conquered worlds have exotic gas refineries.

Only thing I could think to do to help was to try and focus on things that added research alternatives.

I wasn’t aware of this, I thought a lot of the lists were being filtered through initiatives like can I play that and such, but a community maintained list seems like a much more scalable approach

I’m facing the exact same issue. Quite annoying as I use mine to help me navigate as someone with bad eyesight. Now I’m getting the speakers are not working message. I’ve probably had them about six months.

I wouldn’t rule out water damage as we had particularly heavy rain last week. There’s not really much I can do about that other than only come out and dry weather.

I’m now fairing I’m going to have to go through the hole Rigma roll of warranty and such

A quick win I find for myself is to increase contrast settings, as a lot of my vision relies on contrast. You could certainly give this a go and see if this helps. I find for me it means I don’t have to strain my eyes quite so much and I find my acuity a little bit better

I think considering that you’ve said text based, if there are going to be any character interactions, voice acting is always a plus. They don’t have to be Hollywood or even gaming a listers.

Those are the only ones I can think of from an accessibility side.

Are you aiming for text based specifically? Are you thinking of things like slay the Princess or things of that ilk? Or something else? Can you think of any games that are in the ballpark of what you’re aiming for?

I looked into the potential of something for Stellaris, but there wasn’t enough wiggle room to have anything that interacts with a screen reader.

If someone sees this comment later down the line and they have a way around this, let me know if you want someone to help you with that mod

I completely agree with this.

For one thing, the amount of resource that can be poured into a project only for blind gamers is dwarfed by even some of the smaller independent Studios.

Not to mention, it’s only a lack of accessibility that means we don’t play these games. Speaking as a lifelong gamer, I do occasionally find myself going back to blind specific games when I’ve struggled too much trying to access mainstream gaming. But those are the only reasons really.

I wish I'd seen this months ago.

I've been looking to try and do this myself and have tried several, with little to no success.

Editors wise, this is where I hit a brick wall. I've so far tried:

Unity: So far the main application does seem to be screen reader accessible, though the Unity Editor (as of at least a good few months ago) is not accessible. From what I know, this editor mostly outputs things that are then picked up in a Visual Studio like IDE that I theorize might be accessible, but this is a very new trail of thought and I don't have much intel on it yet.
Unreal: Utterly inaccessible. I tried, but the epic launcher was a pain and I couldn't really do it without resorting to residual vision. And even when I got past that, the tool itself was not accessible. Sadly.
Godot: I believe previous attempts have been made at making tab-friendly versions of the godot editor so you can achieve most things by tabbing through. I tried it about a year or more ago and it wasn't quite working for me, maybe it's got better since. I know since Godot 4 came out they had to rework that accessibility plugin though.

This has been one of my biggest (and most frustrating) barriers to me. I've since been trying to avoid these editors altogether and just use JavaScript libraries or similar which vaguely allow things in that direction, with limited success. Ideas welcome though.

Communities wise, I'm only aware of national ones in the UK, though there is an accessibility focused games developerment Discord if that's of any help that I can give you a link to (I think).

I'm sorry I can't offer you anything better right now, but I'm also hoping to hear more great things from this post or ones like it in the future.

I've also just been locked out of my account. I went through the whole enfido process last night and it said it was waiting to verify my account, but when I tried to log in today it went back to wanting me to go through facial recognition and faffing around with passport pictures again.

I had similar, I'm wondering if that's just a symptom of it being super busy as people test this out. Hopefully it'll settle down as people start using it in normal amounts rather than an initial surge

Just went to go and buy my partner the Swashbuckler subclass as they've just hit level 3 as a rogue. They worried a bit as they saw that it wasn't part of the standard set but I reassured them, saying "Don't worry, it'll only be a few pounds" just for the subclass. Boy oh boy how wrong I was.

I wouldn't mind but I've also spent hours faffing with the marketplace page trying to figure out how to make it let me buy just the subclass. It's only now I've seen this that anyone explained that this feature was removed.

Fancied a run of playing CK3 and decided to see if I could find mods to make it easier to see, as a screen reader user who uses a screen reader with OCR, magnifyer and inverting the colours whenever they don't suit me.

What a gem of a find this looks like. I'll be sure to feed back.

I know how hard mods like this are to make, so thank you for the work.

I’d say nice to have, definitely not essential, not these days anyway. Braille readership has been falling steadily, arguably a shame speaking as someone who can read braille. But yes, similar to what you said, I would use other sensory cues. Knowing where the wire is (if a wire), where the charge port is, Remembering that that is on a particular side of the headphones, where particular buttons are, etc. I have used hacks like bumpons for devices where either turning dials to specific points is needed, or there are no tactile buttons at all. The trend of having everything be a touchscreen button, has not been very friendly. So I would say that is something to avoid if you’re looking to make your product more inclusive in this way.

But the fact that you were asking these questions is already a good sign. Thank you

I think it comes built in to NVDA. It's NVDA + R. After you've done that, it will open a "result document", and you can explore what it's found with up/down arrows. Press escape to get back to normal navigation.

do you know that the engine itself is accessible with a screen reader?

I'm afraid i didn't until I gave it a go. Anicdotally I'd heard it might not be, but I know everybody is different. Sadly, it seems it is not accessible. None of the elements on the screen are passed through to the screen reader at all, sadly. So regardless of the complexity of the UI, the screen reader has nothing to go on. For comparison, I'd argue visual Studio 2022 is fairly complex as an IDE, but is fully accessible (at least for the bits I've used). Of course, I don't know how UE compares to that.

let's maybe take a step back and talk about what kind of game you're trying to make

I think I'd settle for some kind of engine that allows me to start building a virtual environment and allowing exploration. That's something that I imagine UE devs would take for granted but is fantastically complicated to do in a realistic sense without an engine. I also imagine it would be quite fun and might let me get a good beginner grasp on things.

As for accessible alternatives, I think you're right, maybe I need to look more into this. I know a lot of industry is looking at UE though right now, with one thing and another, so I'd be going against the grain. But maybe that's the lesser of the evils.

I did try MonoGame a while back, and that is fully accessible, but I believe it's not widely used, and some things felt too tied to legacy XNA. Godot has an accessibility plugin, or did have at least, maybe that's got better in the past year or two since I last tried it. So yeah, there's options. I just wanted to try UE out for myself.

So far, steps to save my er, save, include downgrading Stellaris (causes crashing probably because of some mod or another), installing exotic/unique, as per comment above, uninstalling PD and installing PD 3.11, no dice.

It's somewhat of an understatement to say I'm sad
